I live in a one room studio apartment. The Terra Cotta heaters work very well if you place 1 in the bathroom, 1 on the cookstove, 1 in the living area and 1 in the sleeping area. That's if it's really cold outside. I've done the same with can heaters made from cans that food comes in. Called hobo heaters. You can also cook on those.

I had always counted on our fireplace as a source for backup heating, but had gone a while without using it, and the last time I tried found that the chimney had a blockage i it. Lesson learned to keep a chimney maintained. I couldn't agree more on the advisement against the use of kerosene heaters. My dad came from such a rural upbringing that he saw no issue with using kerosene heaters in his modern apartment. It didn't even phase him that it made everything in his place reek like diesel exhaust. He preferred the "natural" heat they gave off in comparison to his baseboard heaters. Sure, he cracked a window for ventilation, but that kind of defeated the purpose of using a a heater when cold air needed to be brought in. It took a long time of reminding him of all the impracticalities and dangers of that practice for him to finally give it up.

@JonathanBJones5 жыл бұрын
Hey Duane...I understand your concern. Yes, the cost could become fairly high, particularly if you are using the 1 pound cylinders. If you can use a 20 pound or larger tank outside and run a hose in through a window or a dedicated sleeve through the wall, this becomes much less expensive. Obviously, you will only want to heat a small area and will likely try to use it intermittently. I'm guessing they recommend having some ventilation because you do need to have combustion air. If you are in a small, tightly sealed area, you could potentially deplete the oxygen. The Buddy Heaters do have a low oxygen shut-off that works well below 7000 feet in elevation. As always, whenever using any combustion device, I encourage you to have a digital readout CO detector close. If you have the ability to get and use a wood burning stove, this is my favorite, particularly if you can cook and heat with it. Wood stores very safely and the stoves vents to the outside, thus making it my preference. I recognize that in many areas, wood stoves are forbidden. Look at all your options, and do the best you can. Thanks for being part of the solution!

Our household is lucky to live in a southern Nevada location that usually has very mild winters. Our plan is if the local power grid stays down for more than three days and we are tired of wearing layers of winter clothes indoors and sleeping in cold weather sleeping bags, then we can start living in our RV which has a propane-fueled heater and stove top. If the local power outage continues to the point we are on the verge of running out of propane and we cannot refill our propane tank locally, we probably can travel in the RV to a location with even milder winter temperatures for a nice vacation until the local power grid is restored. I'm thinking an RV trip to southern California, southern Arizona or southern Florida might be a good choice to get away from a prolonged, local power grid failure. This could be the perfect excuse to dine at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami and then stop for a crab boil meal on Tybee Island and then some Texas BBQ and Arizona green chile cheeseburgers on the trip back home. When life gives you lemons, the prepared make lemonade.

A wood stove puts out carbon dioxide. I think any thing that puts out a flame does. People have burned wood to stay warm, cook, lighting for thousands of years. That said we burned wood and used kerosene heaters to stay warm during cold winters all my life. Heck I'm 89 years old now and still kicking. My mom was in her nineties when she passed away and she did the same thing as well as her ancestors. We never cracked a window in the winter. In a house I would not worry, but I would not do it in a small enclosed area like a van, or tent.

I’m actually more worried about keeping cool ! More people die from heat stroke than from cold per year! I can just throw on more sweaters and blankets and be fine but excessive heat just sucks!

The only reason why more people die from excessive heat than from cold is because America's natural gas and electric grid has not suffered a major failure...yet...

Just draw a bathtub of cool water and lay in that. Pour it over your head and face and back. That brings the body's core temperature down. And stress is a killer so don't worry. Old timers cooled off in the creek or a dip in the pond.

A lot of folks who can't handle very cold or excessive heat waves well usually has underlying health problems due to age, heart, etc.

@@cynthiaweathers6979 When our electric went out for 6 days here in Florida due to Hurricane Irma, the temps were in the 90's with horrible humidity. I would sit in the front yard and spray water on the grass and the bushes, and spray myself with the hose. At night, without a breath of air, I would keep a full spray bottle of water next to me and when the heat woke me up I sprayed myself, head to foot. I had a pretty wet bed, but it was better than the heat.

Great Video... but I am worried about the open flame depleting the oxygen in the air.... plus carbon monoxide after a lengthy period of time.

I have been looking into a Buddy Heater. Two things concern me: 1. They do not say they can be used indoors, although many reviewers use then in RVs and houses. How can I be sure? 2. I live at 7200 feet, just a bit above the maximum for using it. Will it still work at this altitude? It seems like this is the best option for me.

Look at the wall-mount, ventless propane heaters. They can be used indoors. Always have a carbon monoxide detector when using any indoor gas product.

Unless your house is 100% airtight... and no house is, you'll be fine using a heater for a day or so. As an added measure of safety you can always keep a window slightly cracked to draw in fresh air and still stay warm

Regarding terracotta pot heaters. Do you think pots and face masks are the same in the way that is 2 is good, 3 is better!? If my children were sitting around in shorts and short-sleeve shirts and were chilly, I would suggest warmer clothing, not bring out a space heater!
@jimsandall20733 жыл бұрын
I know this is a couple year old video but still relevant. Your info about kerosene heaters is misleading at best. If adjusted correctly a kerosene heater burns clean, has way more heat output then a Buddy and is more cost effective to run. Maybe you should do some research on kerosene heaters and do a video on how to use one properly. Most the videos I see or comments made about the kerosene heater talk about adjusting the wick for high or low heat but in reality there is no high or low, the adjustment is to get the best flame height for a clean burn. Heck some videos makers don't even have the heat guard on right and wonder why the little access door won't open all the way.

@@TheProvidentPrepper Expert? Your flattery will get you no where. I'm not much of an expert but we used kerosene heaters growing up and 2 of them are my primary secondary heat source. I used them on and off the first winter after I acquired them just to get an idea of there capabilities. I'll try my hand at some video work this winter, maybe it will be something you can use.

Going to respectfully disagree about kerosene heaters. There are dangers, but when used properly they’re super efficient. Buddy Heaters are great, too but propane is much more expensive.
