My parents used a similar tactic when it came to 'sharing' food between my older brother and I. One got to divide the portions, the other got to choose which portion they wanted. Made it so both of us would make at least token effort to not short the other too egregiously. What can I say, it works.

Classic way of insuring fairness.

@@SCPhillips32My parents did the same, and my understanding is it’s a pretty common tactic to get siblings to share more fairly. So I’d imagine the negotiator (and by extension their writer) would have at least been familiar with it, if not had it used on them by their own parents.

Ah - the old "Mum's Choice" - one of you cuts the cake, the other one chooses which part they get. ...ah, yes, I remember it well

They really should have read up on human culture and principles. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book to deal with negotiations between hostile or excessively self-serving parties. And they clearly antagonized the guy in the first meeting, otherwise he might have brought up this plan himself.

Those hostile and excessively self-serving parties 9/10 times being cohabitating human offsprings, i.e. siblings.

There's a fancier, like round robin version of this, for dividing up things among multiple parties. Does anyone remember how it works I just vaguely remember it exists.

I don't remember the name of the method, but it is a known way to split resource fairly with biased parties: make one divide and second to choose. Except the way it works should be made known for both parties.
