Best Hiking Socks (Who Makes Them?)
There are a lot of factors that go into making the best hiking socks. In this video, I cover what makes a good hiking sock and give you my opinion on who makes them. Whether you're setting out on a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail or a weekend hike, your choice of socks is important. The best hiking socks will help prevent blisters and foot injuries on the trail.

@@pieonthetrail I am currently using Wrightsock Brand, it has a sock liner sewn into it. Haven't gotten blisters anymore with them. Not good for camping as the feet get cold but hiking they are awesome.

I have been using darn tough for years. I recently added a pair of injinji hikers into the mix and find myself wanting to wear them for everything I do, including squat day.

I have a fused right ankle and have a hard time finding shoes/boots that are accommodating. I have a pair of Kenetrek boots which are very stiff from heel to toe. But I like them because since they are so stiff, they have a rocker sole built into them which is great for a fused ankle. So I use a taller over the calf sock and like the compression. I really like the Kenetrek liner socks which are more like a light weight than a liner. The heel and toe are cushioned which is nice but makes them a little to thick for liners. They are polypropylene which is very soft and great at wicking. They make them in a lower cut as well. I don't know who actually makes them but they are USA made. Polypropylene is not the most durable material but it isn't too bad. I usually don't dry my socks in the dryer and this make socks last longer and stay in better shape. Even my wool socks don't go into the dryer. Plus I dry my boots most every day I use them on a boot dryer. This helps keep the socks dry as well. I also like the Altra zero drop shoes as well. The zero drop is great for a fused ankle since ankles are fused at a 90 degree angle. I wear the Altra in warmer months but can wear a pair out fairly quick. I will wear out a shoe/boot twice as fast on my right fused ankle than on my left foot. I walk a lot too, 6-10 miles a day mostly mild trails and some road walking in the summer to avoid chicks and tiggers. Good socks are a must as well as the right footwear.

Keen to see your foot care routine on the trail mate. What are your thoughts on waterproof socks? Thanks for the great vids.

I usually only get toe blisters, so Injinji have been a game changer for me. I’m a fan of Trail Toes ointment for foot prep (a tip from Skurka), makes my feet practically waterproof, great for chafing in other areas, too. I keep some in a ziplock bag on trail. I’d use Vaseline or Aquaphor if I couldn’t find it, though.

Very useful video, thank you. I currently use double-walled hiking socks from CimAlp (french manufacturer). They are ok, zero blister but probably not the optimum comfort. I'm considering merino wool socks. The "Injinji" type of socks make me laugh, not in a disrespectful manner, I've seen a few video where hikers wear this type of sock and I have one question: - Don't the "Injinji" type of socks require shoes with a larger toe-box ? Thanks

BodyGlide Foot Anti Blister Balm. I just discovered this, and Army Rangers swear by it. I am a Former Marine, and In the old days, we didn't have anything like it. You can find it on Amazon. $8 each, walmart wants over $14.00, so try it. I got two from Amazon for $17 and change.

What are your thoughts on drymax socks? Also, do we agree that waterproof shoes/boots should be avoided in favor of quick drying mesh shoes-especially when combined with super fast drying socks like the drymax?

Ok hi I work as a dog walker, that means between 80 or 90 bloks a day that I walk... SO this is the real McCoy about socks : Fist I wear those socks that are suggested in the video, to absorb the sweat, comfort...etc... And then I put on a pair of football/soccer/rugby nylon LONG socks... and BOOM...!!! That solves lots of problems 1.They make those expensive wool/cotton socks last forever, because they work even if you decide to cross a river with your shoes on, or if it happens that you have to walk under the rain. 2. They prevent blisters because ether wheat or dry they reduce the friction between the shoes and the skin. 3. They can be worn ether folded almost in half that means comfort ( I wear the top end to my mid part of my feet), or fully stretched until your knees and that will help muscle problems while hiking. Cheers
