How to make the best cheap homemade bike chain cleaning tool kit for road bike, trail, bmx, or mountain bike cycling. Use an empty plastic 1 liter soda or juice bottle, several old tooth brushes, duct tape, small piece of rubber from old tire or computer mouse pad and a tin snip, knife, or heavy duty scissors to cut the plastic bottle. First we show you how to make dual tooth brush chain cleaner. Then a portion of the plastic bottle which will keep fluid from dripping on your work space and eliminate the usual mess of manufactured chain cleaning tools. Hook on the cut plastic bottle, spray the chain with a biodegradable cleaner, use the tooth brush tool to get the dirt between the links and and then wipe with a clean cloth. DON'T FORGET to lube the chain when finished. The cleaner tool cost pennies, easy to use and is done in minutes without the mess. Better then the messy expensive plastic machine that you see advertised. Periodic chain cleaning and lube along with cleaning of your cassette and chainrings will keep your drive train lasting longer with better performance. With this easy bike maintenance, your ready to cycle.

I only use degreaser (such as Simple Green) on the chain if I'm going to subsequently rinse the chain and wipe it dry before re-lubrication. I do this if I've been ridding in the rain or muck. In between times, about every 150-200 miles, I do a quick 2 minute chain and drivetrain clean up (see the videos below). I use only a tiny bit of turpentine (evaporate of the chain fast) on a cloth and wipe off the excess grime on the surface of the chain (or a dry cloth if turpentine is not available). Once I complete the 2 minute cleanup, I re-lubricate the chain. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5CYl4GYebNmi6M and kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnS2homDrd6sadk When you lubricate the chain, work the chain backward to work the lubricant into the bushings. Let the lubricate sit a bit, then wipe off the excess. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5OudHuqj5djY5I Regards and safe cycling, Tony

@@daktarioskarvannederhosen2568 If you are doing our 2-minute quick clean, you place on tiny drop of Turpentine on a cloth, wipe the chain surface, then continue to wipe with a dry part of the cloth. You're using a minute amount of Turpentine and wiping off the excess (which will also evaporate). In the absence of Turpentine, just use a dry cloth. I do not use Degreaser unless I'm going to also wash the drivetrain with soap & water, rinse with water and dry. Most bicycle degreasers will interfere with subsequent chain lubricants we use. I stay away from Gasoline and Kerosene since both are environmentally unfriendly and very hazardous to ones health.

I find it less messy then working with the units you fill with degreaser that clamp onto the chain. And you don't want degreaser on your rims if you have rim brakes or your rotors or pads if you have disk brakes. I use Simple Green (not the one marked "degreaser" but just the inexpensive one found at your local grocery store). You need to wipe it down thoroughly before lubrication (if working inside) - but ideally, it's best (working outside) to wash with soap and water, rinse and wipe completely dry. Most degreasers will interfere with chain lubricants and make them less effective. Regards, Tony

Turn the crank a number of time to work the lubricant into the links, let sit overnight (if your can) and then wipe off the excess. Regards and safe cycling, Tony

I used to clean my chain by removing it and throwing it into a jar with solvent, shaking it until it got clean. Early this year I got a new bike, and I decided to change my lube as well, to Rock 'n' Roll Gold. I I lube it the way Rock 'n' Roll recommends; flow it onto the chain, rapidly spin it, and wipe clean with a cloth. I have over 2000 miles on it, and the chain looks new and has no measured wear. So simple, and I don't need to bother with a separate cleaner or cleaning step.

Where we live, the roads have lots of dust, grim or sometimes just wet. We also ride in all kind of weather conditions. I do a quick clean each week and especially and after being in wet conditions. Not sure even Rock 'n' Roll would last 2000 miles. You must have excellent clean dry roads. Wish I can say the same for here. Thanks for the information. Regards, Tony

@tony10speed

For light dirt/grease, one can use Concentrated Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner from the grocery store. However, if you want a deep clean, I suggest Finish Line Citrus Spray or Simple Green Bike (from bike shop or on-line). Remember, this is only the first part of the process. One must then wash the chain with liquid soap (such as Dawn) and water using a soft brush on the chain, cassette, and chainrings to remove the degreaser (and sponge on the frame if needed). Residual degreaser will break down any new lubricant applied to the drivetrain. Rinse with water, wipe dry, and re-lubricate the chain, and pivot points of the derailleurs. I do this when I clean my bike every few months or if I ride in very muddy conditions. In between times a use a quick method described below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5CYl4GYebNmi6M The idea is to keep the grease and dirt from building up by being pro-active and thus, keep your shifting in top performance. I just wipe down the cassette if things are there is not to much grime or dirt. See our 2-minute drivetrain cleanup: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5CYl4GYebNmi6M&ab_channel=TonyMarchand But if I've been out in the rain or there's much grime and dirt, the whole drivetrain (including the cassette and chainrings get scrubbed with degreaser, soap and water, rinsed and dried. It's best to remove the front and rear wheels first and wash separately so as not to get degreaser on brake pads or disc brakes. When rinsing, try not to point the hose directly at the hub or bottom bracket bearings to prevent grease from being washed out. Seem reasonable? Regards, Tony

I’ll try this method when i apply wet lube later this week. Thanks. One question sir Tony. When applying a dry lube for the first time, is it necessary to remove the chain and dip it in some mineral spirit or kerosene to totally clean it? Or can i just do method you did above?
@tony10speed
@tony10speed 5 жыл бұрын
Good question with lots of differing opinion. No it is not necessary to remove the lubrication on a new chain - which will last several hundred miles before re lubrication. However, if you ride in DUSTY OR DIRTY conditions as I do here in the wooded east coast back road, I superficially wipe off a new chain with a tiny bit of degreaser on a cloth (I've switched to turpentine which evaporates faster), wait a few minutes and apply lubricant as in the video. See our video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5CYl4GYebNmi6M There is no need to place the chain in mineral spirits or kerosene. Here is a great reference: singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/new-chain-sticky-factory-lube-remove-it-first-or-not/ Regards, Tony

@DMcTyke 3 жыл бұрын
@@tony10speed My opinion is indeed different. Mixing different lubes is not recommended. Some lubes, such as Purple Extreme or the dry (wax) lubes should be applied to a completely degreased chain. If you want to use one of the aforementioned lubes, a brand new chain should be degreased with several changes of petrol or similar solvent, by shaking in a jam jar or immersing in an ultrasonic bath, then allowing it to dry completely before applying the lube. Failure to do this will compromise the performance of the chain lube and will condemn you to having a horrible black gunky chain after every ride as the mixture of factory grease, lube and its carrier solvent mix with road grime.

Sufficient to lay/tape atop the backstay & down to ground, & protecting the wheel. Then just spray, wipe, spray, brush, spray, wipe...till done. It frees both hands, rather than jiggling the bottle in place. I bet a creative guy like you could find a way to get maybe get a narrower plastic bottle and epoxy those brushes inside it and then have enough de-greaser in there so you could immerse the chain in it and crank away to a bright and shiny chain. The idea you show is great but someone like you is always thinking of an improvement so we don't have to purchase the expensive Park chain cleaner.

Two toothbrushes attached facing each other should have long enough bristles to allow sufficient cleaning. If that still a concern, when I do my 2 minute cleanup, I use a brass bristle brush on the chain. Must be the tooth brush. The ones I got from my dentist have long stiff bristles. Tooth brushes also come in different stiffness ranging from firm to extra soft. A your grocery store, look for extra firm tooth brushes with long bristles. They're not expensive. If still concerned, you can obtain a brush with brass bristles from Amazon. Don’t you need to rinse the chain with water when you are done? And then let it dry before applying your lube...

Yes you should. The plastic bottle just keeps the degreaser from getting on to other parts of the bike (rims, disc brakes, etc.). But degreaser can interfere with any lubricant you add. So the answer is yes, wash with soap and water. Thanks for the comment. Regards, Tony

On the surface, yes. Take a look at our video on homemade chain cleaners where we look at combinations of dishwashing liquid with other ingredients versus those regular biodegradable degreasers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npWTeXpqbbejac0&ab_channel=TonyMarchand If you're doing a fast 2 minute drivetrain cleanup on a chain that's not to dirty, a superficial clean prior to lubrication would be OK. That's correct. This is a demonstration video to show you an option for cleaning a chain and didn't want grease all over the place which would obscure what I'm doing. However, most of the chains we work on in the shop have much dirt and grime and the tooth brushes work well. Often we also use a stiff brass brush or an old slightly stiff used paint brush to get between links.

Not really. If you're running a 10, 11 or 12 speed, you'll need to replace the master link after you've re-installed the chain. Deep cleaning of the chain is fine if you've ridden in very wet and muddy conditions. But otherwise, you're removing some of the lubricant that is deep within the chain bushings which you really don't want to routinely do - at least not often. My personal suggestion is before you wash your bike (however often that is) to also spay the chain (as well as the drivetrain) with biodegradable degreaser and use a brush to get into the chain links, cassette cogs and chainrings. Then you want to make sure you remove the degreaser with soap/water and rinse well. Finally wipe down the bike and re-lubricate. In between washing, I use the method shown in the video using biodegradable Simple Green to remove superficial grime and dirt periodically, also rinse with a spay bottle with water, wipe it down and re-lubricate. Take about a minute or two. But that's my own personal suggestion. Regards, Tony

Keep the degreaser from getting all over the rims (rim brakes) or disc brakes. Also less waste. Don't forget to wash off any excess degreaser with soap and water before re-application of any chain lubricant (since degreaser can interact and decrease effectiveness of any chain lubricant). For crying out loud, if you spend $1500 or more on a bike, is a $30 chain cleaning tool that big of investment? I take care of numerous bikes and I can do a better job in half the time. Park Tool, Pedro's, Finish Line and others make great chain cleaners for a small investment.
@tony10speed

Each to they're own preference. If you do a lot of bike work, the Park or other tool cleaners may work well for you. For others who may performing that task less frequently, using the tooth brushes or nail brushes on either side of the chain with biodegradable degreaser prior to washing works for them. I find those plastic chain cleaning tools messy and eventually break. But that's just my opinion. So viewers, it's your choice. Thanks Johnny.

The tooth brushes are just to get the degreaser into the chain (and the brushes will turn black but can be rinsed with degreaser to clean them). After use of degreaser, the chain needs to be washed and dried (I do all this outside with the chain on the bike). The use of the plastic bottle just helps to keep from splashing any degreaser on wheel rims (rim brakes) or disc brakes. Regards, Tony

@@aidiekuhnke7948 Most dry lubricants work best if you work them into the chain by turning the crank and then lettings it dry several hours (preferable overnight). If you want to buy a chain cleaner tool, that's your choice. I find them messy (when you go to remove them from the chain) and have had a number break over the years. The video is just an alternate, uses less cleaner (I use Simple Green which is biodegradable), and easy to manage. Some prefer to use a re-useable master link to remove, soak the chain, then scrub, wash and dry. The chain cleaner tool you bought is quite an exception to the rule. Rather then be critical, be more positive and tell us the make and model of your chain cleaner, what is the cost and is it still made? Regards, Tony
