The reason for Man Thing and Swamp Thing appearing months apart is because the first Man-Thing story was co-written by Gerry Conway who was roommates with Len Wein who co-created Swamp Thing.

Creepy magazine from Warren publishing is fantastic. It ran from 1964-1983. You can get the original issues(not reprints but the actual issues)for around $10 each and every book has around 7 stories. They also used different writers and artists throughout the run and since they were a magazine they weren't under any restrictions with what they were allowed to print. Best bang for your buck(in my opinion). I own the entire run.

Dante you gotta check out the Charlton horror line. As a kid I loved them. Midnight Tales,Ghost Manor, Creepy Things, The Many Ghost of Doctor Graves. Gerry Conway (creator of Man-Thing)was sharing a room with Len Wein (creator of Swamp-Thing) at the time, and they bounced idea’s off each other.
@Dante198836 жыл бұрын
Ah thanks for that interesting info! I kinda figured since the characters appeared around the same time and were so similar in concept lol
@charleshudspeth67716 жыл бұрын
As far as the Man Thing is concerned Conway was working off of a detailed plot written by Roy Thomas who wrote that plot off of a few sentence plot by Stan Lee. The entire Ted Salis origin was within that plot. That was the first issue. The second issue was written by Len Wein (who created the first Swamp Thing around the same time the First appearance of Man Thing then wrote Man Things second issue. After that he created the second Swamp Thing and DC gave that Swamp Thing it's own series) and Drawn by Neal Adams. It didn't see print for almost 2 years. Lol it's a very complicated story but I think history ,the publication dates, and the creators all agree Man Thing was first. Conway even tried to get Wein to change the origin of the Swamp Thing stating how similar they were. Wein didn't see the similarities even though they were both scientist creating a wonder drug and both get fused with the Swamp due to the drug. Lol

Your Crypt-Keeper impersonation was good enough to alarm my dog. Nice work. :) Also, for what it's worth, I'm a horror fan and I have a hard time getting enthused about the Marvel 70s horror reprint titles, such as the one you showed -- "Crypt of Shadows." I own a few dozen, and while it's cool to see Silver-Age Marvel artists like Gene Colan in a horror context, some of the stories are absolutely nonsensical. Also, regarding EC -- probably the least-expensive option for obtaining EC material is via the softcover "EC Annual" collections, which cover the entire New Trend and New Direction EC output. Each volume includes (typically) five issues of a particular title -- it's five single-issue reprint comics bound together. If you look around at online auction sites and comic conventions and are patient, you should be able to get most volumes for $8-$12 apiece (not including shipping). The few expensive volumes are Tales from the Crypt volume 1 and 2, Shock SuspenStories volume 2 and Weird Science volume 2.

A less expensive way to acquire the EC comics line is with the Russ Cochran/Gemstone reprints, individual issues that sold for around 2 bucks in the 90s. They often available on eBay for not much more.

I'm a big fan of the titles you mentioned. Your glaring omissions are the magazine-size comics of the '60s through the early '80s. Warren is king with the unholy trinity- Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella. Marvel added some great titles with Monsters Unleashed!, Dracula Lives, Tales Of The Zombie, Vampire Tales, Haunt Of Horror, etc. Skywald rivals the best with Nightmare, Psycho, Scream, and Hell-Rider. Then we have Myron Fass with Eerie Pubs. Many publishers got into the act including Stanley, Atlas-Seaboard, and others. My favorite title is the 3 issue run of Web Of Horror featuring work by Wrightson, Jeff Jones, Kaluta, Ralph Reese, Bruce Jones, and others, from '69 and '70.

@@Dante19883 Great! Looking forward to that. Well, if you are willing to hear suggestions, I have a few for you: - More artists and writers focused videos. I personally loved the video you did about Liefeld, so I would like more stuff like that. - Underrated comics, sagas or runs. For example, I love Marz's run with Kyle Raynier, the 90s Green Lantern and I think his run was underrated. I gotta say , I'm a huge fan of your concept videos and this one is no exception .Tomb of Dracula #42 was one of the first 5 comic books I ever bought . I fell in love with the series , got every issue until it ended at #70 and picked up 1 -41 to complete the set .In my opinion it is the best continuing horror comic in the history of the genre .(and before Swamp Thing fans jump all over me , let me just say You're WRONG ! ) Seriously though , I really do loves me some Tomb of Dracula . House of Mystery and House of Secrets ..also classics and I recommend to anyone who hasn't read it to check out the original I,Vampire series which ran in H.O.M. from the late 290's to 319 if I'm not mistaken (It's also available in trade . Can't agree more on the EC books , but since we all know about those already , I'd like to yap about the other horror comics of the era . I know there are too many to name , but for anyone wanting to check some of these out but doesn't have a money tree in their back yard , there are hardcover reprints of a lot of these published under the PS art book imprint .If you have a Half Price Books in your area , these can often be found heavily discounted , and are well worth it .In lieu of that , IDW has a YOE imprint where they reprint a lot of these stories as well , in a bi monthly anthology comic called Haunted Horror as well as affordable hardcover collected editions . The other thing I'd add (hey! you in the back ..wake up ! I haven't been droning on THAT long!) would be to check out some of the Eclipse horror comics from the 80's . Anyhoo ...that's enough of MY prattling . see you on the next vidso .

Just found this and brother you're speaking my language! When I owned my comic shop (Shadowland) from 2003-2008 I had a horror theme throughout the shop and pushed everyone I could, especially the kids toward the Marvel Showcases and DC essentials(the black and white reprints of the classic titles) to try and get them into it. A few random thoughts on your topic, if you don't mind. 1-Marvel rocked individual Horror characters. They took the Universal Monsters and owned them. You mentioned TOD and WBN, but The living Mummy(supernatural thrillers) was really well done and so was Frankenstein's Monster(lot of great Mike Ploog art) Now DC did do well with Swamp Thing(Wrightson and Wein both passed away within a the same year...creepy) and The Demon, Phantom Stranger and Spectre were good, but corny until Moore got his hands on them, but in general Marvel gets the nod in characters 2-But when it came to anthology of course EC absolutely is the standard to the point marvel(atlas then) and DC didn't fight the comics code because they were willing to work around it whereas it shut down EC who was killing them. BTW aside from the hardcover anthologies(and yes DH is a rip off) Gladstone comics reprinted all the EC horror titles in comic form in the 90's and did a good job of it. 3 of the "Big Two" DC owned anthology horror. Nothing Marvel did as Atlas and the few original horror stories they did in the 70's can compare to The Houses and Witching Hour, you did leave out two other great ones Tales of the Unexpected and Ghosts. They just had a better more creepy and traditional feeling than Marvel's work IMO 4-Little brag...picked up a collection recently and the gem was a HOS number one in about 3.0 scored $310 with it on E-bay. My personal copy is nicer and not parting with it LOL 5-little brag part two...my store and myself were mentioned in the letters page of Walking Dead #10...my stores 15 minutes of fame 6- I know you focused on comics, but bummed you didn't mention the great Warren mags, Creepy Eerie and of course the original borderline erotic horror style of Vampirella. Being that a lot of Warren's original staff were people from EC using the magazine format to circumvent the comics code, thought you could have segued into them. 7-Also surprised you didn't mention the original Eerie series by Avon as #1 in 1947 is the first horror comic to ever be published. 8-recommendations. Being a huge fan of pre code horror I'd tell you to check out the collected editions of Eerie from Avon, Witchcraft also from Avon and Witches Tales (Harvey publications believe it or not. 9-Thank you for reading my ramble and thanks for the great video and paying homage to this awesome genre, you have a new subscriber.

I am a HUGE fan of horror comics! Most of what I currently actively collect are the Marvel Horror comics from the 70's, DC Horror/Vertigo books, and X-Men. Crypt of Shadows got me into Marvel horror back in the day. I had gone to the first used comic store in my area and they had a mostly complete set. For whatever reason, I was just bored with super heroes. I guess being 8 or 9, I just wanted to get into something more scary. So, along with Marvel Spotlight #3 and #4 with early Werewolf by Night appearances, that was what got me going. I love those old Atlas horror stories! They had that same "greasy" feeling as EC, but were far more kid accessible than some of the other stuff from the time. They're hard to find nowadays in any condition, but I've managed to snag a few old issues. And the Bernie Wrightson/Len Wein run of Swamp Thing has to be seen to be believed. I finally got a trade of the early issues a few years back and was blown away by how awesome they are! Seeing Tomb of Dracula here made me remember I need to start working on getting a full collection of that title again. Wolfman was awesome on that book! And Werewolf by Night is always going to be one of my favorites.

Japanese horror is not very good usually has bad acting like that crappy movie the ring but there are some amazing thriller type movies on they're end like old boy and audition. The anime is where it's at when it comes to Japanese flicks like princess monoke, spirited away, grave of fire flies, paprika, perfect blue and finally Akira I believe was the best and most memorable movie of all time for me this Akira is simply what made me realize anime is legit.

The only horror comic book I read Freddy Krueger and Friday the 13 and Ash vs although there is one horror comic that piss me off well here it is Johnny The Homicidal Maniac anyway it’s drawn and written by Jhonen Vasquez the creator of Invader Zim made a horror comic about a maniac going on a killing rampage whilst paint people’s blood on his wall since there is a monster living in Johnny’s house plus they are other characters that are creepy and weird like the psycho dough boys and a bunny that has a nail on its stomach regardless I freaking hate this comic anyway if I were you don’t read a graphic novel call Johnny The Homicidal Maniac don’t do it ps jthm sucks besides I would prefer to read kitaro of the graveyard than this piece of crap anyway screw jthm sigh I am done talking here
