The triple whammy of this joke is brilliant. From the outset you already know these kids are acting and looking very mature, then you get to the coffee, and you are thinking this is as far as this joke is getting or at least you think you know where is going and then BAM! you get blindsided by that last comment that is so adult, that you can either laugh or be shocked like the boy. It's brilliant!

That one is a serious film, and "Airplane!" added a lot, but the basic plot is the same & a lot of the scenes are redone as parody, like this one (the original lacked the "like my men" punchline & had adult characters). I think what's interesting is that (and let's assume all of these are genuine first time reactions) you can see where some of the reactor's minds are going before the punchline hits, but it still surprises them when the film delivers the joke from children.

@matvangogh the captain in zero hour is John Wayne. And Airplane follows the script so closely that they bought the rights to zero hour to avoid any lawsuits even though parody is legal. It's a real trip to watch it as you mentally hear the Airplane jokes under the serious scenes.

The coffee scene is one of the few parts not taken from Zero Hour (1957), for which most of Airplane is basically a shot-for-shot parody remake. The original coffee scene is from Crash Landing (1958). The scene takes place at about 30 minutes into the movie, if you're interested.

I saw this in the movie theater with my siblings when I was 14 and I got it, and we laughed non-stop so much through this movie our lungs were aching! Glad to see you watch this for the first time!

The girl at 1:10 you can tell has a quick mind and genuinely gets the humor. All the other girls took a long time to react. It's funny watching the men too. Some watch the women, waiting for approval to react, others just laugh cause it's funny. Some of the women you can tell just laugh because it's expected, but don't get the joke. This clip could be a case study in human social dynamics.
