My mother found a package of yeast Red Star Yeast in the back of her cabinet this is expired 6 years ago. I said that I would like to try to make some bread with it. This was in her storage cabinet in the basement for her long-term storage. So it has been kept in a very dark spot that is very cool year round, never freezing though. I will tell you it made a wonderful loaf of bread, however it did take longer to rise, a lot longer. But it did do its job so clearly there was enough yeast alive to make bread! Which is good to know. It was instantaneous for your information I was shocked because it wasn't stored in the freezer but it's good to know that it still works

I don’t plan on really saving yeast that long however if I have old yeast and need to make bread with it then I will use it again. 3/4 rise is better than no rise.

Hallelujah! I needed this video. Great Tips! I currently have my yeast located in the freezer door. Once our new freezer (keeping fingers crossed) arrives in July 2020, I'll be storing yeast using your recommendations. Fyi... We purchased a new freezer partly based on your video that alerted us to freezer shortages. Our current freezer is 39 yrs old (knock on wood) and we got worried as to how long it would continue to run. Purchased the freezer 6 months before we adopted our daughter. Another concern was, I didn't feel like I actually had very much meat/food in it and wanted to have more freezer storage. (If things go bad, I have 6 people to feed. Could even be up to 20+ people.) Freezer Search - I told my husband about your freezer search and other people noted the same thing. My husband just couldn't believe it and went on a search to prove me wrong. He called everywhere (even 150 miles away) and found nothing. Finally, he called the same big box store that I called and actually got someone to see what was scheduled to arrive and when. Shocker.... the freezer I wanted was scheduled to arrive 05/25/2020. We paid for it and locked it down (maybe??). Prior to delivery, the store called us to let us know it didn't arrive. Now they THINK it will come in on 06/02/2020. Thanks for the great video's you do.

In our area back in April, I heard rumbles about Freezer shortages. Talked with a DIY shelfstocker and he mentioned a truck due date and that they weren't taking orders and they were going fast. I hung out at the store on that date, as they dropped the 1st pallet, I ask for one and he said one moment I need to unload the truck. I took out my fat black marker, wrote my name on it. He looked at it, looked at me, looked at the flatbed I had there, cut the straps, put it on my flatbed, took it to the cashier for me, loaded it in my truck and wished me a Happy Mother's with knowing Smile. It was the Saturday before Mother's Day, he was a Wise Son that his Mother should be proud to have raised.

When you mess with sourdough, having stored yeast really isn't a concern, and if your starter goes bad, you can start over by catching wild yeast out of the air with a new batch. Great thing about a sourdough starter is it doesn't even require refrigeration if you make bread a couple times a week, and you don't have to get crazy feeding it like some do which does waste some flour unless you bake everyday with the discard.

To be fair they have bought some flour , yeast and other stuff , but even it they did not supply anything I would still bake it for them, One neighbor which is a young couple asked if I would teach and yes gave her a list of things to buy or borrow so they could make their bread.

I am very appreciative of all your videos. This yeast ‘thing’ has had me concerned. Hubby and plan on trying to be our children’s rural ‘base camp’ should any event occur. I know both boys are able cooks to some degree. I think the wives are able and all are very teachable, but honestly I know that I am the only one with actual real life experience and knowledge on these things and I sure don’t want to think about yeast for a while as we all transition into a new lifestyle. So, I think hubby and I need to vacuum seal the already 1 lb vac packed yeast in Mylar or Vacuum bags to keep them from getting bumped around in the freezer. Also, should we go into a grid down losing power and have to remove the yeast from the freezer the packages will already be sealed. I really can’t express how much I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

My question is to store this yeast long term in the freezer, should I leave it in its original package or open it and put it in glass jars? If left in its original packaging, won't that leave it supseptable to moisture? I have canning jars, but no way to vacuum seal them. If I just twist the lid on the jar tight, would that be enough to make the yeast last long term in the freezer? Or should I just throw it in the freezer in its original packaging? Please HELP!!! I have a question that is not really relevant to this particular video but I can't find an answer so I thought I'd ask on your most recent video. Do rolled oats need to go through a freeze to kill any bugs in it just like you would do with wheat or beans for long term (25 year) food storage? I'm getting ready to store them and I don't want to waste time if I don't have to but also don't want to open them and find critters. Even though without oxygen after hatching they would not live long.

@@TheProvidentPrepper my plan was to freeze and thaw (if necessary) and then put in Mylar with oxygen absorbers and then store the mylar bags in sealed plastic buckets.
