Votoms is definitely top tier of Real Robot anime, and Chirico is one BAMF.

Always knew of Votoms but never really got a chance to watch it. Being a fan mecha in general, I am happy that its coming up more now. I also am noticing just how much Heavy Gear is inspired by this, (in terms of the mechs).

Since Votoms is getting a new blu-ray release in Japan next month, along with Mellowlink in HD for the very first time, as it was believed the master for it was lost for years which thankfully seems to be proven false now, more than likely we'll either get a standalone release of Mellowlink in the west at some point or knowing Sentai Filmworks, under their Maiden Japan label, they'll re-release the entire series again just with Mellowlink included. All in all, good video and summary of one of my absolute favourite anime series!

Chirico might be stoic for the most part but he certainly has more character than alot of stoic heroes you see nowadays. That said its funny seeing characters like Chirico, Setsuna, Heero and Sousuke meet eachother in SRW, their first words are usually just ".....". Can't say it isn't accurate! XD

Armored Trooper Votoms could definitely crossover as an action movie film played by real actors. The story not only encompasses human versus machines and fighting in a war, but it also holds a good love story between two unlikely characters with a very strong sexual chemistry, but are forcefully always being separated.

I’m considering getting the VOTOMS complete collection but I’m not sure yet because the ending of a story can greatly affect my opinion of it as a whole. I don’t want to know the ending but I wanted to know if you or anyone else here would consider the ending sad. I can handle bittersweet and even some cliffhangers but I’m not a fan of sad stuff. I don’t care if there is anything sad that happens in between, I’m just talking about the ending because I know this is a long franchise and I don’t want to get invested in something I’m not satisfied with in the end.
@TheBigHaloFreak3 жыл бұрын
The overarching story in Votoms is...grand to say the least. There is a lot of stuff which enhances and builds on the original TV anime. I think getting the complete collection is worth it for the TV series alone, especially since the ending of the TV Anime is very self contained. I also wouldn't describe it as sad, still a bit bittersweet though.

I loved this show up until the final arc when Wiseman showed up. Its not really that theres mysticism, but that it came too late and way out of left field. Other mecha involving stuff like this like Gundam, Evangelion, and Full Metal Panic made the mystic/psychic power stuff evident pretty early on. In VOTOMS it feels contrived. It also feels cheap for Chirico because you would think the reason he's so powerful is because war has made him into a killing machine that can stand toe-to-toe with a genetically enhanced super soldier. But no, he's actually just the chosen one by "god".

I stumbled upon Votoms after watching footage for a Super Robot game and was curious. The series is probably one of the best Real Robot shows ever. I think the one thing that even puts it above, say, the OG mobile suit gundam, in some areas is that it's a real even playing field for most of the show. No one has a 'super advanced prototype' machine. Most pilots are using the same tools as their oponents so it boils down to their individual skills and strategies.

I have always really liked Votoms. I started watching without sub/dub it on a pirated VHS tape. Some of the art was ...meh... but it has a really solid story and fantastic mecha and vehicles. Chirico is a BAMF, but Coconna, Vanilla, and Gotho are a great supporting cast. I even had the RPG (very 90's, but it had a lot of great background information)
@PhilipAJones3 жыл бұрын
I JUST finished this series. I really liked the first arc with the ragtag team of characters but Vanilla, Cocona and Gotho take a back seat in later arcs and without them I felt Chirico didn't have a foil to play off of. Epsilon didn't interest me that much as a rival and I don't feel like Fyana was really developed all that much. She literally existed for Chirico. I also liked the third arc as it contained my favorite episode in the series with that one woman who wanted revenge on the Red Shoulders stalking Chirico and Fyana. I loved the soundtrack (I eventually started singing along with the OP and ED) but I felt like some tracks were used in spots where they didn't fit the mood. I also feel like this series must have had an influence on METAL GEAR and to a lesser extent CODE GEASS but I can't find any proof. Though as a Sonic The Hedgehog fan I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Death Egg Robot's landing animation comes from the VOTOMS in this series. Overall, even though I felt the pacing was slow sometimes (especially in arc 2), I'm glad I watched it.
@TheDutchGhost Жыл бұрын
I agree with you. With Ypsilon who I think was kept longer around than was necessary, just constantly obsessing about Chirico an Fyana. And Fyana whose only role after the Kummen arc was to worry about Chirico most of the time. I felt that Chirico had some positive character development in the Kummen arc before becoming a d*** again. Maybe this is a Japanese thing, that this makes a strong man. The opening track had to grow on me but now I rather like listening to it from time to time even if I can not understand a single word without the translation. I think the series could have been a bit tighter by removing some unnecessary plot. I also think that the AT's influenced the design of Metal Gear though both mechs serve such different roles. The AT are basically mechanized Infantry while the Metal Gears are more highly mobile artillery with anti vehicle and some ant Infantry weapons attached to it. Heh, now that you mention the similarities between the Death Egg robot and the ATs such as that piece of animation I also see it, though I had to watch Votoms to learn about it.

Would you say that the Maiden Japan blu ray set for Votoms is better than the old dvd releases we had here in the States? I only ask because I’ve heard some say that the quality of the blu rays isn’t as good as the old dvds surprisingly enough.

Honestly I feel like panzer dragoon saga has a similar set up. Edge is the last survivor member of a group of mercenaries that were killed by Crayman in his search for Azel. Azel is a genetic modified human like Fyana, and edge is the first to find her like Cherico. Crayman also has Azel try to kill Edge, but over time they both fall in love. There's also a focus on religion, but it starts much earlier on, and I think it was better developed than Votoms. Then again PDS had the gift of hindsight compared to Votoms. And this is obvious, but there's little Mecha in PDS, Edge rides a dragon and only the Exterminator Boss really resembles a Mecha.

If I had to give one criticism for Votom it would be that.......it's almost too grounded in terms of the mech design. By that i mean, with the limited visible optics of the machines, I can see why they have to have the pilots wear masks that seem to give them direct feed from the cameras.......the problem is then during the cockpit scenes your just seeing a mask all the time. You don't get to see a lot of the pilots visible emotions during the fights.

Votoms has some decent twists and turns. Chirico's PTSD is depicted pretty well in the later episodes, deepening his character. However, it has annoying side characters, and the "rival" of the series, Ypsilon, is a pretty tired and contrived antagonist. Even for the time. The Kummen Jungle Wars felt like a bit of a slog too. In my personal opinion, the best mecha anime ever, is Zeta Gundam.
