I should have mentioned the small issue with the Retrobit pad. Unlike an original 6 button controller, it's possible to press the entire d-pad down. This means that you can accidentally press a direction you didn't intend to if you press down too hard. I have never run into this problem myself but I can't say that it won't be a problem for others. If you're someone who grips their controller hard and presses down on the d-pad with force then you might want to reconsider the retrobit.

This is normal, it's also the case with original sega controllers. I have an original genesis beside me and used one of the original retrobits as well.. they're made on the same moulds. I've even disassembled both controllers and they're the same inside, and out, parts may very well even be interchangeable, and the plastics used in the retrobit controllers is of a way stronger plastic than the originals, and will hold up a lot longer... sega dpads you could always press down all directions at once, so you use them by rotating your thumb around the outside edges, and the dpad itself is scooped in the middle so sliding your thumb in any direction will press it

Great review mate. You covered all bases. I would like to ask you a little more detail regarding those d-pads. I just bought the 8bit do version before seeing this video. Wasn't cheap either (78 AUD) it's the new wired one with all the features.

3:24 The rubber pads under the buttons are better quality than the 90's rubber pads ever were and especially after 30 years of degrading. The most awesome thing about the new 6 button reproduction is that you can buy one and refresh your original controller to good as new. So you can transfer new rubber pads to your old controller making it feel refreshed and identical to the reproduction. And you can replace any broken buttons or the outer shell or the PCB if the old one is busted or a cord is broken. Even when the new one and the original are opened up they are identical in every detail and all parts are swappable.

I’ve got two M30 Bluetooth controllers, and three Retro-Bit 6 Button 2.4ghz, and the Retro-Bit is overall more reliable. With the M30s I’ve had both D-pads stick at certain directions after playing isometric games. Opening them doesn’t show any issues so can only assume that the rubber underneath gets stuck sometimes after extended use / movement. I’ve had one of the Retro-Bit ones for 3+ years and also played with it for surely over 300 hours with no issues.

I got the M30 Bluetooth like two weeks ago and the exact thing that you mentioned happened to me. The rubber underneath got sticky and it kinda messes my inputs. Seems like Richter mode in Symphony of the Night is THE dpad killer, already killed two dpads doing that :/

Yeah although there are loads of new exciting retro gaming products, unfortunately a lot of them aren’t cheap. You can be a retro gamer on a budget though.

I think Retro Bit have the retro controller market by the balls with how cheap but well built their controllers are, and the fact that they worked with Sega to get the feel and shape right. I have a wired 6 button Mega Drive controller and it worked great, it didn't feel cheap (despite the fact it is). I loved the controller that I bought 2 more. A wired red 8 button version and a wireless version. If you're willing to go preowned, you can get a wireless controller for the price of a wired.

I have one of the Bluetooth 8bitdo controllers and one of the Bluetooth Retrobit SEGA Saturn pads and I love them I use them all the time for emulation, fighting games and I love using the Saturn pad for Sonic Mania on Switch.

I have one of these for my Sega Mini. It’s an amazing controller. It feels like the original, only better! ;/) edit: I was Talking about the Retro Bit “official” Wired controller for the mini. They actually have sales occasionally for $5 off the regular price (which is already pretty low).

I liked the retro-bit when I first got it. But soon after it went to hell on me. But I can only lame myself. I got R-Type for the Master System and I decided to use the retro-bit controller inside of the original. Long story short I wore out the membrane for the B button and now it don't work. I was mashing that button like crazy. Like I said "I LIKED the controller when i first got it."

i got the blue tooth one so i could connect it to more devices like my phone, or if i am using a device that has a bluetooth connection but i don't have the 2.4 receiver with me. I think it works fine if your displays and everything else have low latency already

Can’t fault 8 bitdo the controllers are well made snappy and respond
