Was able to tell the difference right away. Mic B had more lower frequencies resulting in fuller sound.However, not having to use cloud lifter as well as audio interface, MV7 is hard to beat!

​@@jessieFSD An "XLR to USB adapter" IS an interface. And there's a good reason for the Cloud Lifter: these mics have very low output levels, so you need a really good pre-amp. The Cloud Lifter provides that extra sensitivity that you need with dynamic mics like this.

Mic A sounds more clear, but Mic B sounds more comfortable to the ears so I would prefer to hear people using that instead of Mic A.

I have used the MV7 for about a month and recorded a couple hours of online training with it. Great mic, well worth the money. The only problem (you could hear during the tests) is the plosions, or popping “P” sound. I’ve never heard that with the SM7B but they will happen with the MV7. There is a simple fix, purchase the RK345 replacement windscreen for the SM7 and put it on the MV7. That solved the plosion issue and I think brings the sound quality closer to the SM7.

For vlogging, podcast, or your daily mic for online meetings, the MV7 is good enough. But for professional audio production let's say voiceover or singing, the SM7b is still "go-to" mic.

I honestly believe that the Shure MV7 is really really more than enough, for streaming, online calls ( discord, messenger, skype, zoom ), for in game voice chat, and maybe even recording casual vocals and voice overs and even podcasts. I think the SM7B is there only if you want to kick these things up a notch.

as an audio engineer, I can tell a HUUGE difference. richer saturation, tailored high end (selector switches on the back of the SM7B), and more of a natural boom within the lows... HOWEVER, for the price range, the MV7 would be a great option! no cloud lifter to buy is also a plus on your price point AND you can create a close replication sonically within post-production. If you don't know what to listen to, a lot of people will not know the difference. at the end of the day, it's about producing great content... no one is going to tell that you're using an MV7 vs an SM7B if your content is awesome... I may buy this mic for guests when the time comes for podcasting. great video and thanks for sharing that with us. I would like to also add that Rode has came out with a great affordable alternative to the SM7B as well called the Rode PodMic... you can grab one for 100.00 and it's built like a tank.

@@dancygr a cloud lifter is just a preamp to make the microphone a little louder because the SM7B only has a sensitivity of -13 decibels, the Mv7 is something like -27 or -30 decibels so you won’t need a preamp for the Mv7

A definitely has more high end on it while B has a more balanced out EQ with more present low end. There isn’t much difference if you’re not listening and took me a second to even hear any difference when comparing like we are doing. I’d say if you’re looking to start out doing stuff like podcast, streaming, music and whatnot, you’re not gonna regret getting A especially if you don’t have monitoring headphones and an interface. If you do have those, I’d bite the bullet and go with the more expensive option cause in the long run you’re gonna save money. Btw I listened on my phone speakers (like most people will be with whatever you’re recording) so if the difference is more drastic than I made it seem please feel free to chime in with your review.

The sm7b seemed to be a little more clear in the mids and boom-y. The mv7 seemed a little more muddled towards the low ends. But I’m sure with some adjustments in EQ they’d be very similar if not indistinguishable.

Wait are you serious? What are you listening with? Theres a big difference in sound. The MV7 has a more neutral sound, it sounds a bit clearer, and maybe a bit more natural. The SM7b is much warmer, it'll make you sound like your voice is deeper than it is, but thats a less accurate representation of your voice.

If you compare $ 500 and $ 50.000 cameras they too might look same in limited scenarios but there is a reason hollywood shoots with the 50k ones. Same goes for everything and these comparisons won't tell you the whole story.

Thank you for posting. I picked the SM7B right away and sounding better.. however price to be functional is 3x or 4x the price of the USB Shure. I will be moving up from Shure SM-58 for voice over/speech and perhaps some singing. So MV7 sounds really good and for the next year I’m sure it’s more than good enough for my purposes.. I may jump that road vs more expensive SM7B + cloud lifter etc etc.. when buying gear.. especially Audio and lenses (not video cameras) it’s best to get better than cheaper.. but not necessarily go for a Neumann as your first mic ($2,000+) when a $300 mic will sound fantastic and 99% of people listening won’t hear much of a difference... I suspect this MV7 is in the good enough for a lot of years group... Thank you for posting.

Excellent video for the comparison of these two mics. The SM7B definitely has the richer, deeper sound, great for broadcasting. The MV7 has the convenience of what the SM was missing. Now I know that the best mic would be the combination of the two. The sound of the SM7B with the alternate usb/xlr/headphones of the Mv7. Why can't they make one that has it all. I'd pay for it. What would push it over the edge is to include a cloudlifter or have one built right in.

You can change the sound inside the application for the MV7 to make it normal, dark, or bright.

Mic A is the MV7 and Mic B is the SM7B. The SM7B has more floor SNR so with proper Pre-Amp levels it's a more fuller and rich sound without compression. Same as the difference between the EV RE-320 vs. the EV RE-20.

The color of the mic foam is shown at the beginning of the vid before the comparison, you can see that the sure MV7 is very dark black, vs the shure SM7B's more grey, so I could tell the difference right away lol.

I was able to tell the difference, but only because of the letter 'p' in price - when you switched to the MV7, the plosives were obvious. I've read elsewhere solution to this is just a bit more distance by using the SM7B cover, takes care of it

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a good mic, just get the MV7. Especially if you are just going to use it for gaming. You can barely hear the difference on like headphones or phone speakers. No one is going to watch your video in a studio lol. It’s also easy to plug and use.

I haven't finished the video yet, but I want to say that mic B sounds a lot better imo. You get a lot more of the fine characteristics of the low tones, with better bass and richer tones. Very nice mic. edit: just got past the reveal, and I'm disappointed. I was hopeful that I would magically like the sound of the cheaper one. I did not :(

I'd agree for podcasting or something like that where you're using your regular voice. But for vocals, especially when there's a lot of distortion involved like in metal or rock, I think you have a strong argument for the SM7B. The MV7 does really well with cleans as well but I think that the SM7B does do considerably well the more distortion you have in your voice, until you have screams, especially false chord screams that can get much lower than the SV7 tea designed for. But for simple voice, the SV7 is the obvious choice between the two.

Let say for people that will not have a professional post production or maybe profesional sound check before start the podcast or streaming, I would recomend the MV7. Why? when you did the direct comparison the MV7 has an issue related with P "sound" but the SM7B has the hiss issue... and for me the hiss issue is a pain in the ass when I'm hearing a podcast or streaming.For me the "p" issue is not "that" big deal. I know that both issues could be improved in post production, and the idea of the SM7B is get a huge "raw" sound (like a raw file photo) that get the the people in the studio, all the raw material to edit (the actual recording process, right?). But that's is the reason why I would say for non profesional people the MV7, maybe is a better option. Also, there are all the hardware matters that you say in your video. Really good job dude!! this aint a fair comparison, idk how good this zoom recorder thing is, but you should have just used a audio interface would have been much more fair. that cloud lifter is definitely adding to the sm7b and you arent using the auto leveling of the mv7 which i feel would fix the lower output and compressed sound. edit: I was right in judgement using an amp to boost the sm7b is inherently going to make it sound better, you are amplifying the transients and overall louder just sounds better to the human ear; you should do this again without the amp or plug both into the amp and use the auto leveling feature of the mv7. This test right now is bias and misleading people who dont know audio like that.

@@audreynogales The 7A & 7b had/have a noise humbucking coil otherwise they are the same mic in spec as the SM7. There is an emphasized low end response in the B. So yes the Sm7 was the original mic used. The design other than noise reduction and larger body / windscreen of the current 7b is the same. They do not sound completely different they sound barely different at all and with corrections in post there would be no audible difference. Thanks for the reply David

Listening in a studio, on professional audio monitors, the difference is simply HUGE. It's not just the low end as many say. There are clear differences in the mids and even more in the high mids. It also lacks high end as it lacks low end. The frequency response of the SM7B is simply much more balanced and extended. The MV7 sounds like a harsh response with both low and high pass filters built in.

I'll take a look at any kind of new microphone from known brands, no matter what the price point is. Many times I get really surprised by the audio quality of non expensive options. But yeah, this was not the case at all.

I use a Condenser Microphone from Sudotack. It's a USB microphone with surprisingly good audio and the price for it is even below 70$ 💰 (The link to the microphone is in the video description of basically all of my videos. Hope that's helpful info.) 🙂

Both are fine, I think I'm just done looking at a giant black mic Infront of EVERYONE'S face on KZbin for just talking. In 2021 when there's so many practically invisible microphones that will do the job for people that are just speaking, not belting out vocal tracks in their home studio. I bet if there was no video/KZbin, and straight up just audio, people wouldn't be so quick to spend that $400 on a 7B. Looks are everything! SM 58 sales would sky rocket. In today's world, if nobody can see it, who cares. The 58 would do just fine really, no-one would notice. Just bring the good content. I have a $18 Shure 57 knock off on a rack Tom on my drum set, sounds great. Did a shootout, I couldn't tell.

I really liked your method. I was afraid I'd had confirmation bias. While I did liked the SM7B better it was a very subtle difference. I don't think the SM7B is worth the extra price + gear (audio interface, eventually cloudlifter). Maybe uf you already have the extra gear

The mids sound identical but the sm7b definitely has more low end boost which was really only noticeable when you were talking directly on axis, but again that could’ve come down to proximity effect.

Those are really close. I did get it right, but it took a little bit. The MV7 has just a little less on the low end which makes the high end come through in a slightly sharper way. But this was very hard to tell the difference.

I can only really tell the difference when they're side by side. If you just had someone recording on the MV7, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Both are excellent mics.

You don't want Phantom power on. Phantom power is for condenser mics. Both the SM7B and the MV7 are Dynamic mics where phantom power is not needed. The MV7 is a better buy for people starting out. Also using a few plugins with a touch of EQ can make that MV7 sound as good or better than the SM7B. Good review either way man. Good job.

Usually you need the phantom power for the cloudlifter on the SM7B. Agreed it's not to power the mic itself, but it needs a gain boost.

The SM7B has about 10% more assertion and pop to your voice. I realize the price is pretty dear for that 10% but I'll be doing it.

For thoss who don't know a cloud lifter is a device that increases the signal level of a microphone by amplifying the phantom power it receives from a mixing console or an audio interface. This allows the microphone to capture a stronger, clearer signal, especially when used in noisy environments or at a distance from the source.

The mv7 isn't worth the price but the sm7b is definitely worth the higher price. The sound is sooooo good (can you see I'm biased) I love the sm7b and as an audiophile, I love the dark sound the mv7 just doesn't have

That’s a great way to put the difference. The dark sound of the sm7b is what sets it apart. It’s subconsciously the way we expect podcasts to sound.

It’d say it’s worth the price. Because the only thing it doesn’t have is as much low end. That can easily be tweaked in EQ to be better, although never SM7B standards, but still, better. Like I said the only thing the MV7 doesn’t have is as much low end from what I’ve seen. Having this good audio quality being USB, definitely sets the price point just fine in my opinion. It’s a great option for people that don’t want to spend $500-700 on a microphone to allow the SM7B to reach it’s peak audio quality (because of XLR interfaces). You may be forgetting about that extra required cost, so I must say in that regard and putting that into consideration you may be wrong.

@@tristenreed8899 Exactly. In the Shure desktop software that comes with this mic you can EQ it with one click to "normal-mode," "dark-mode," or "bright-mode." So if you want a darker warm sound you can click that and get it.

SM7B sounds brighter on the top end and has lots more clarity in the lower frequencies. SMV a little warmer all round...

Most people buying the SM7b choose it because it’s ’THE podcast mic’. It’s a status symbol of professionalism/legitimacy. However, that new cheaper model ‘looks’ pretty similar. Zoom also recently released a similar looking mic the ZDM-1 for $79.99. Doubt many users will notice the sonic differences.

With the Shure SM7B you aren't supposed to eat the microphone also it depends on what cloudlifter you have. Also you can use EQ on the SM7B to make it sound better. I like the MV7 too.

I am doing some research and the SM7B is in my opinion by far the better sounding mic. It sounds way more professional and it really gives a fuller sound. Having said that, I'll go with the SM7B since I need the highest quality video.

You're not wrong at all, it definitely picks up a bit more ambient noise! I listened again and definitely hear it. I only preferred the SM7B because of how it handles the low tones.

The mics could easily be identified by their windscreen shapes and color. Next time take the mics completely out of frame. And the SM7B captures more of the low tones and bass in the voice, as usual, whether you like that or not depends on personal preference or your voice
