I have been using Fuji X-T cameras since 2015 and absolutely love them. They are so intuitive to use, with SmallRig brackets are extremely comofrtable to hold and mount and take just gorgeous photos. I've used the X-T3 since it came out. I do not do sports or wildlife photography with it but for landscape, architecture and travel photography it is simply wonderful. I have a panoply of lenses for it but the 16-55 gets the biggest workout. If this pandemic ever ends, I'd love to get the image stabilized X-T4 with the 18-55 and 10-24mm lenses as the ultimate compact travel setup. As I get older, lighter and nimbler is key.

I know you're not keen on it, but I'll put in a word for the Nikon Z50 with the twin lens kit (about £1000 UK brand new). Both kit lens are sharp, albeit slow, and combined give you focal length equivalents of 24 - 375. I've recently got back into photography after a long break, and replaced my old D7000 with the Z50. Couldn't be happier - it's much lighter, which was a critical factor for me, image quality is better, and the ergonomics are great. The lens line up is improving as well, with some faster primes available. It felt like a good way for me to get into mirrorless with a good all-rounder.
@DennisKapatos
@DennisKapatos 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty solid recommendations with a couple exceptions: 1) no one should buy the Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM, it’s expensive, huge, not sharp, Sony is due to replace it any day now and it’s resale value will plummet, and the Sigma DG DN version is better in every way and $1000 cheaper and will hold its value. The Tamron 28-75 is also a smarter and better option. 2) if you want full frame and you’re on a budget (one that doesn’t include $2000-$3000 lenses) then be aware that a kit based on a Canon R6 or RF is going to be substantially more expensive than a kit for a Sony (like the A7 III or IV) because there are no 3rd party lens options for Canon and many fantastic options for Sony.

I have both and still go to the Sony rather than the Sigma. More shots first time and it's nicer to use. I pretty much agree with the advice though. If you don't already have the Sony, save some money and get the Sigma or wait for the new version of the Sony.

I agree the 24-70 needs an update however I've had too many focusing problems with the third-party lenses to recommend them.
@DennisKapatos
@DennisKapatos 2 жыл бұрын
@@tricamel yep that's exactly my point. If you really want a Sony lens, buy a 3rd party 24-70 for now and sell it when the mark II Sony comes out. I have the Tamron and have zero complaints about the autofocus. Its boke can sometimes look meh and I wish it went to 24mm, but otherwise it's absolutely a winner.

agreed- the only knock on the RP might be its smaller battery life and its a tad slower than lastest gen at AF- but if you want the best image quality at the lowest price in a modern convenient mirrorless- you cant go wrong with the rp
@hungrydavo
@hungrydavo 2 жыл бұрын
I had the RP. I honestly hated it. Tiny batteru and painful ergonomics. I also struggled with the dynamic range and odd behaviours in the raw files when I edited them. I had to get the photo perfect as I knew editing wouldn't be an option. The canon R was way better I found - restored my faith in Canons!
@-_--le3zk
@-_--le3zk 2 жыл бұрын
The reason for rp not being famous is simple,it has way to low features for its price,and funny enough that it doesn't even have that full frame advantage in image quality over other cameras,infact dynamic range is worse than sony and fuji cameras,so what is the point of buying an rp?
@bass1996
@bass1996 2 жыл бұрын
@@-_--le3zk " it doesn't even have that full frame advantage in image quality" well it has in noise. My reasons for RP it's small and light, has the best touch interface, small file sizes, reliable AF, it gave me better keeper rate then sony a7iii and a6400 with eye af and I wasn't expect that. Dynamic range gives me +/-2Ev which is enough for most situation and if you have to take landscapes you can go oldschool and use bracketing.

I would say that a better option than the d5xxx line is the d7xxx line. On *gasps, not KEH*, MPB, you can normally find d7200 or d7100 for 300-500. I'm pretty sure it's the same sensor, but you get a better built body, just at the cost of flip out screen. And for under 1k sports photography, I'd go for an 80-200mm af-d for like 300-400, in addition to a d7200 or even a d7500 for the extra speed and iso performance. It's the poor man's version of what he recommended

Former Nikon purist here, but switched to Canon recently. Love my R5, esp since (a) it's 45MP and (b) it shoots 120fps video, whereas the R6 does neither. No overheating issues w/ recent firmware upgrade, but if you really want to kit it out, you can also throw an Atomos Ninja 5 on it so long video problems solved. A few other possible options: Pentax K1 for landscape and portraits, even maybe for wildlife with the older da*60-250. Also the K5iIS which is readily available on the second hand market. Pentax's are rugged, have great controls and are very well weather sealed with bright OVFs and when matched with a handgrip and two batteries give all day shooting and good handling. Olympus m4/3s a smaller alternative for outdoors, the E-M1 and original E-M5 being good value. For sports and wildlife a Nikon 7200 has excellent tracking and a great APS senor. Lastly for Canon you should consider the 85/1.5 USM for portrait photography.

I like that you mention the D5300 at the low end of $1k budget DSLR. The older DSLR's (including the Nikon FX line) currently is where the value can be had right now. With Mirrorless starting to take over in the entry-level and prosumer side (Pro's have already switched over for the most part). But got to mention lens selection, getting a 50mm prime is huge for beginners. It force you to think more about your composition and how close or far you need to be to your subject. I feel like zoom lens tends to hurt a beginner, but I get if you need that first lens it maybe a zoom. But please don't over look the nifty 50's. Some of the best shots I have gotten over the years are from that cheap $100 50mm.

Canon 6D is a beast and although a bit outdated, it's still my workhorse camera paired with good lenses, still gets incredible shots. Especially since Im used to it now and its a part of my workflow, I learned to be very efficient with it. So in general although an older camera might not be the fastest or have the best/fastest autofocus, if you learn it and practice with it, and become efficient, you will still get great results....... but I want the R5 eventually 😅😭

The Canon R6 with the RF 100-400mm is the lightest and most enjoyable combo I've carried and I shot with the D500 and the 300mm pf before that. This new r6 combo is a great price value and so compact and lightweight with fast focusing, tracking and beautiful image quality.

If anyone's looking for a budget low light vlogging camera, I can highly recommend the Sony ZV-E10 Tony mentioned paired with the Sigma 16mm f1.4. I've been blown away by this combo, especially once I added a gimble.

It's not the camera that produces the image but the lens and the individual behind the camera that produces the image. Any modern system regardless of sensor will produce professional results. The key is to understand the tool (camera) you have and leverage its strengths and weaknesses. MFT camera systems did not even have a mention which is unfortunate due to overall package size and outstanding weather sealing (Olympus/OMS). Important for those who travel where most FF cameras make you stand-out rather than blend-in.

I bought a Canon 90D a few months ago and use it for landscape and wildlife. Probably not the best choice for those genres, judging by the recommendations in this video, but so far, I have no complaints. I was wondering if you have an opinion on the 90D's performance compared to the 70D.

FYI- I owned the R5 as well and since I mainly shoot portraits- I found culling thousands of photos after a session to be really slow on the R5. My current workflow is I use R6 then if I find a winner I need to blow up huge for prints- the adobe enhance tool gives me great 80MP raws that look amazing if you use sharp glass

So you use the RF glass on the R6 to get the same result basically? I'm looking at getting a full frame and been thinking the R6, but is the 20MP enough?

The soft out of focus background term Bokeh is actually pronounced Bow-Kay, with a short vowel, like the word Token without the n or Po-Ke the Hawaiian marinated tuna fish delicacy. Not Bow-Kuh. It is also a term to describe becoming or being Senile as in out of focus brain function.

I just have to add the Olympus om-d e-m1 mark ii with the Olympus 14-150 lens to this list for wildlife, it takes amazing pictures, great ergonomics and the best environmental sealing in any camera, mine has been soaked by waves then hosed off a lot and still works like new. The only drawback is the small sensor needs a lot of light.

One thing to consider is LENSES. I don't know why people just focus on the bodies. Yes they can be among the most expensive pieces of gear you buy initially, but generally people buy lenses for a longer period of time (say 5-10+ years). Lens selection should really be what people focus on more so than the bodies. The average shooter probably upgrades bodies every 3-5 years but it is usually an upgrade that is not always necessary, but a "want". That being said, on the low-end I feel that the Z5 or Z5 for the Nikon system, RP for the Canon, and Sony a6000/6100 and A7 III to be the best values in the big three (Both APS-C and FF). On the high-end the Nikon Z9, Canon R5 (or R3 although much more expensive), and the Sony a9 / a9 II or A7R IV if you're on a budget, for high-end bodies.

Surprised everybody blows over the Canon M6 Mark II. Surprisingly does really good for a low cost. I attach my sigma 150-600 with the adapter and it does have a slight delay for a fraction of a second but it actually does better in sports and wildlife photography than my 7d Mark II. Doubles great for vlogging, backpacking and even portraits. I use it for a lot of school events because it is so small and compact.

Random time to say it, but I love the higher frame rates of the videos on this channel. It peeves the crap out of me that videophiles try to make themselves into gatekeepers and say everyone HAS to produce content at 24fps, or they're not “real videographers.” Bullshit. Just because cinema is 24 doesn't mean 60 doesn't look real f'ing good. I personally think it looks way cleaner and allows me to see crisp detail way better. I feel like 24fps is good at masking poor focus pulling. Manual focus pulling that's common in cinema means the camera will never be totally tack on the eyes, but with the FPS shot at 24, there's enough motion blur to mask it. But with the eye detect features of modern cameras, people who use these tracking features produce video that stays truly in focus.

This is the best list and correct one. If you have around $400 just get Nikon D5300 and it can do a lot of thing with nice photo and video capabilities. After that just follow Tony's list....great 👍 I used D5300 before and D5300 can make great picture like D7000 series but without HSS capabilities (cannot use shutter speed beyond 200). But Image quality are the same as D7200 and so on.

Thanks very much for your Recommendations Tony! The average consumer doesn’t know what to buy and this video narrows down choices to your professional, experienced viewpoint. I heard you mention one of my favourite cameras twice which I’m going to be purchasing used in the very near future. The Nikon D 5300 with the 18 to 140 mm lens can be had for roughly $450 Canadian dollars and will be more than enough for my amateur needs for now. I’ll make sure to pick up a good quality 50 mm lens and look forward to continued learning with your awesome references. Cheers to you and your family from Montreal, Canada!
