I have used the Bell Pitt Boss for the last few years and love it. Because of this review I decided to try a Gmax GM65. It was a very nice helmet but I did not like the fit at all. It sat very high on my head like a skull cap and wobbled from side to side on me. It left me with a very venerable feeling. Also as pointed out in the video the visor did not come down far enough for my liking either. As much as I liked how it looked and that the liner was removeable I sent it back and ordered a new Pitt Boss to replace my old one. To me it is a far superior helmet.

Wow the comments are shitty. Here's what I'll say: Do what ever the fuck you want. You want to be more safe by wearing full face helmet? Go for it. Jaw injuries suck. You don't have to justify that to anyone. You want to go a little more raw with a half helmet? Go for it. To some it's worth it. The breeze is nice in a lot of areas. You don't have to justify that to anyone.

I used to be a full-face only kind of guy, but back in 1999 I took a motorcycle group tour in India. I knew it would be very hot, so I took a 3/4 helmet - and I was glad I did. When it's 40c and high humidity, you still sweat a lot in an open-face - you just sweat less than with a full-face. Use the right tool for the right job. There are hot summer days here in Canada where a 3/4- or a half-helmet actually does make a lot of sense, rather than baking your skull in a full-face.

I have this debate with myself all the time. I own a Shoei full face, Bell Pit Boss (half helmet), Bell custom 500 (3 qtr.), and numerous others. I wouldn't ride a sport bike at the track, or my sport touring bike (Concours 14), with anything other than the full face. But when I'm on my Street Glide, I prefer the half or 3 qtr. unless it's very cold riding conditions. I know it makes no sense at all, the full face is the safest and most logical choice for all riding situations. But, it does detract from the riding experience on a cruiser IMHO.

Personally, I never wear a helmet in hot weather, wear a half helmet in cooler weather, and a full face helmet in cold weather. The truth is that on a hot day if I had to put on a helmet I wouldn't bother even getting on the motorcycle. I have survived 46 years of motorcycling using my own rule book and will continue to do so no matter what anyone else says. Motorcycling is inherently dangerous and there is absolutely no reason to do it except for the experience...so I dress for the ride and not the slide.

I also go skydiving for which there is NO effective safety equipment if my chute didn't open and I hit the ground at 120 mph, but I accept the risk and love it. If you wanna die in a hospital bed at 80 years-old, all eaten up with disease, and your mind gone, that's your choice. Myself? I will have options when I eventually face that fate. And we ALL will eventually face that, you too, if you don't die suddenly of a heart attack or stroke first. You're not going to get out of this world alive no matter how careful you are.

I was driven into by a Toyota Camry at a 90 degree angle while riding my bicycle on the way to work on April 2nd, 2015. I was wearing a Giro helmet. I suffered a severe head trauma which resulted in a brain injury. I spent 28 hours in the intensive care unit at San Francisco General Hospital. It took until October for my brain to return to normal. That was a fucked up 6 months for me. That helmet saved my life. But bicycle helmets only cover the head, not the face. My face sustained no damage at all. None.

Yes, dumbo, when you ride your super sport at 70mph or more, you want a full face helmet, leather, gloves, and whatnot. Me too. But when you ride your 50cc scooter at 25mph from the barn to the ice parlor at the corner of your lil' town, and it's 100+ degrees outside, you want to wear NO helmet at all. Since that's against the law where many of us live, we settle for the next best thing: a light half helmet. Its sole purpose is to be in compliance with the law, not to protect anything.

If you needed the same kind of helmet for all speeds then bicycle riders would be wearing Bell Stars. The faster you ride the more at risk riding styles, the better protection you need. I wear a Bell Revolver when going for the day on fast rides doing lots of curves, at higher speed, longer distance. better weather, sun, rain and head protection. Around town I use the helmet in the video the GMax, a high quality lid that is light, cool in hot weather, and a joy to wear, quick to get off and on and better visibility in traffic. I have fallen off bikes more than a few times and never landed on my face.

I like the wider peripheral view factor of a half helmet in the city, you know, animals and kids suddenly darting from the side and such, but I wear full helmet when driving further, in faster traffic. I don't see the point of Bell Rogue though, you can get motorcycle masks that keep your face warm and bugs out of your mouth, which cost less - and are easily washable: buy two and you don't have to worry about waiting one to dry. Masks come with all sorts of cool designs as well. I wear wrap around sunglasses during the day but cannot find the same in clear glass so a clear visor would be really nice: nothing is worse than getting a bug or piece of rubbish in the eyes when driving and you cannot even stop to rub your eyes, until having navigated a junction of something like that... which doesn't even always help. And as much as I like the wind in my face, when it is raining and the raindrops feel like needles in your face, let alone when they hit your eyeball... Yes, a clear visor would be REALLY nice accessory for a half-helmet, because you can't always predict if you are coming home after dark; you'd have to carry TWO pairs of goggles/glasses with you every time, just in case. Not a problem if you have storage space in your bike but some models can just about store a driving licence. Mine cannot even be fitted with a box. Now, I met a young man from England who's face looked a bit odd. It turned out that he had been in an accident wearing a half helmet: he had already had a few operations and was on his way to have one more, to set his skull, and his eyes, right. I don't think he wore a helmet that complied with ANY kind of safety standard (there is none in this country I live now) but anyway, he swore that from now on he would only wear a full - face helmet from England...

FortNine, great review, you know your stuff and you present it well. I personally don't like the full face models,they feel restrictive and seem to limit your peripheral view. I don't catch much wind because I now ride a 'geezer Glide' 2016 Road Glide CVO. the half helmet with the pull down shield for rain works just fine. You next review should include the Voss DOT 888CF Bullet Cruiser Half Helmet, very light, comfortable and includes a drop down shield, as well. In my humble opinion, if you are riding fast and eat it, the difference between the full and half helmet is the difference between an 'open casket and a closed casket'. Apologies for the dark humor. A decent road bike is going to cost you at least 5 grand there's nothing cheap about the brakes on them, everyone i know that has lights on their bikes, i totally get the helmet thing i'm amazed at the lack of tech development, but there open because they require you to generate the power. you should look at FortNine's testing of 1 of the top of the line modular helmets the neotec, the side impact on the helmet kills you and the front hit to the chin bar shatters the chin bar, basically what i'm saying is your wearing a half helmet you just don't realise it.

The same physics apply to all of us. YOU have to decide what YOUR risks are, and balance that against comfort and convenience. A full helmet protects better than a half. There are full face helmets that allow the whole front to lift up for talking/eating/smoking. Search for "modular" helmets. They're not cheap, but it'd cover your needs the best IMO. Ryan's videos have become epic in the last 7yrs. Enjoy the evolution. ;)

I prefer a half helmet for use in town, where traffic is heavy and speeds are low, up to 30 or 40 mph..... unimpaired hearing and peripheral vision are a big plus for avoiding accidents. However, on the open road out of town, at higher speeds more coverage is more comfortable, and safer.

I think there needs to be more info about the aesthetics, comfort and fitment. Some of these helmet have a straight line edge that run along the temple and over the ear. Some are contoured around the ear and then some cover the ear. The ones that cover the ear have a more bulgy look, and I'm not even sure why brands bothered making them, since they're basically a 3/4 helmet. Removable padding is a big consideration, imo.

My plan (good for some 45 years of riding) places a lot of reliance on view and visibility including peripheral vision and not relying on mirrors. You go figure what I wear. In my country, unless we are talking about couriers (who are insane fast and reckless), most squids on crotch rockets actually end up being middle aged men in existential crysis, after their kids are old enough that they don't need the minivan anymore. Those rich enough get an R1200GS and solve the problem more politely, ATGATT brigade. The poorer ones get a 2nd hand completely f'ed up 900RR Fireblade and pretend that they are "cool" at the top of their 40 years old, giving up middle fingers on the highway at 150km/h to people who don't let them lane filter and making us see their butt crack by riding with the short track day leather jacket on a full tuck. Millenials are usually driving a 125cc to their unpaid internship in the safest jacket they could buy, barely reaching 50km/h - because petrol is expensive, ofc. I know for a fact that as a female 27 years old bike enthusiast (buying my first bike this week, an NC700x), I'm actually the exception among people my age.

why would anyone use half helmets??? how safe is that.
@codmott286

They are vastly more comfortable than a full face shield. Many people feel if they get in a motorcycle accident they're as good as dead anyway so what use is there protecting your face when your guts are going to be splattered on the highway. Even a half shell helmet is still designed in such a way that your face itself should be elevated from the ground if you go sliding off your bike. The sides of the helmet will grind against the pavement keeping your chin and cheeks an inch or so away. Imagine laying down on the floor with this helmet on, the helmet would touch the floor first and your face would be suspended in the air. Also there are a few reported instances of a full face helmet getting caught on something during a wreck and ripping your entire head off or snapping your neck, whereas a half shell helmet is likely not to get caught on anything. Most motorcycle accidents involve other cars, not the rider just falling off his bike for some reason. If you avoid traffic, ride in low congestion areas, take rural country roads etc you will enjoy a half shell much more and be risking very little. If you ride in the cities or on the freeway a lot then you'd probably want a full face helmet to protect yourself from stupid car drivers and debris on the road getting kicked up into your face.

What would anyone ride an engine strapped to two wheels! You're either stupid or playing stupid. You know perfectly well why someone would use one. If you don't agree that's perfectly ok, but don't feign idiocy about it. Oh nvm, I took a look at your channel. You ARE actually stupid. All is forgiven.

I had one years ago and man I hated it because once I started going, the damn air would ketch the visor and pull my head back. It had an adjustable visor but it didn't matter. Still sucked. Plus, I wasn't comfortable not having my whole face protected. Good review though.

I ride a Harley, and I ride it all over the south and southwest U.S.. I take trips anywhere from 3 days to 14 days as often as I can. I wear a half helmet most of the time especially on short rides or around town. I carry a 3/4 helmet with a face shield on the trips in case of rain. I wear a helmet even in states that do not require it. These are what I choose to wear and I am comfortable with the risk. You wear what you want to wear and let everybody else wear, or not wear, what they want. That is part of the "freedom" we claim to enjoy as bikers. You people need to get off the soapbox telling everyone else how stupid they are. It is just your opinion,, and just your head. Let everybody else worry about theirs. And remember, in all your self righteousness, there are way more people out there who don't ride, who hate motorcycles and the people who ride them and they all think all of us are stupid and don't deserve to be on the road no matter what kind of protective gear we could wear.

sometimes people need to be told how stupid they are, so they can see for themselves and correct their stupidity, If they choose to continue, it just shows their level of stupidity was too excessive to correct. Yeah you keep on keeping on fucking around without a helmet or with a half helmet. Also post pics when you crash.

I agree with what you are saying. Choice of helmet is a combination of what your own risk analysis is and whether emphasis is on avoidance or collision damage minimisation. Personally I emphasise hazard avoidance and hazard mitigation, which relies upon maximum vision, hearing and 100% concentration. This also requires maximum peripheral vision which some helmets restrict. I used to wear a full face back in the day, but found that when I took to riding less sporty bikes and sat upright my peripheral vision was compromised by the full face. Safety is a combination of many factors and personal strategies and not just the helmet and clothing

If you think a helmet is a save all piece of equipment you are wrong. I wear a helmet, leather coat, boots, and chaps, but that is my choice. I have been riding for over 50 years and have had a number of crashes because of someone else. Did my helmet save me, maybe, but one time it came off as I slid down the highway and I survived because of my heavy leather coat. My full dressed Harley-Davidson probably did more to lessen my injuries then my helmet ever did. I retook two motorcycle education classes, just to make sure I remember good riding techniques, one advance rider two wheel and one three wheel class. Those will help save a rider too and probably are more helpful in the long run. Unless you have at least 50,000 miles on a motorcycle, you should not be throwing insults at people who choose to wear a half helmet or no helmet. I agree with jcf1057, to each their own.

No doubt a full face helmet is much safer. But the riding experience pales in comparison to a half helmet. "...you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do you, punk?"

Are these the best half helmets, your favorite half helmets, or a paid advertisement for half helmets? Why wasn't a Seer included if it was a best half helmet video, as the title stipulates?
@jamessloanofficial

I wore a Seer for years on the job, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on a civilian head in the wild. Presumably, the relatively high price and low general market penetration keep it off the reviewers radar.

I use a half helmet. Less wind noise, more awareness of the environment around you. Lots of noise in a full helmet because your head is placed in a cathedral environment. Noise resinates throughout it. Like putting your ear to a sea shell. It's a noise magnet. This noise is a distraction you don't need. Yes a full face is preparing you for a crash. It's no wonder, you can't hear and vision is restricted.

Might as well not ride at all with that attitude. Why do you have to keep calling people ignorant because they have different opinions than yours? I have had a couple of get offs wearing open face style helmets, and I am still here, still riding, still wearing open face helmets. Until you can claim the same experience I would suggest that you might actually be the ignorant one.
