Sometimes the best solutions are the simplest. This is a bit too overdesigned for me. My solution? A large smooth bucket filled with water, then put crushed pumice on the water and some grains on that and a ramp leading up to the top of the bucket. It'll look just like ground with food, they go in, drown, pumice re-settles, repeat.
