As an electrician I have quite a few meters; I’ve found Fluke hard to beat especially with regard to their non-contact volt probe. I keep some cheap ones on hand, new in the packaging, from say HF to give to a friend or family member when they ask to borrow a meter. A little knowledge can get you in trouble and it’s easy to fry a meter or yourself if used incorrectly so I’m not loaning a $500 meter to someone to just get a sorry about that back. You can get some decent budget meters from Klein, Ideal, and AmpProbe that hold up quite well and don’t break the bank. When measuring most things today a True RMS meter is a must and with electrical work a clamp amp meter is a good thing to have. With clamp meters $100 should really be your starting point, and as you go up so do the features like also measuring DC amps. You should be looking at Cat3 and Cat4 levels the higher the level and volt rating typically signified a better built or better insulated/protected meter.

Klein tools have a whole range of multimeters and they admit that some new items are sourced from overseas. If a particular product of theirs products say ‘Made in the USA,’ they are, in fact, made in the USA. It is illegal to mislabel a product's “Country of Origin”. You do not need a license to buy a Professional meter. If you are only using the meter to test batteries and simple circuits you will only need a basic meter like the one you mentioned. My suggestion is just get a basic meter first.

It's kind of scary that you can die from using a hobbyist meter. If you buy one for a simple car electronics diagnosis, you will likely have it sit around the house for years. At any point someone could pick it up and use it to test house electronics, unaware of the danger.

I wouldn't be too worried. I'm sure many people do test mains power with cheap meters. They are rated to carry out the task but the test probes that are supplied with cheap meters are not very durable.

99.99% of the people commenting here don't need 500-1000 USD of "Super accuracy". People have to calm down and stop buying things just because you can.

"if your looking for a quality meter, buy a brand like Fluke" .....at this very moment, I stopped watching this Fluke ADVERTISEMENT. I'm guessing you only buy SNAP ON sockets for your Snap on ratchets. I'm not knocking Fluke one tiny bit. Fluke/Snap on/Mac....... Yeah, I get it. People watching are expecting a realistic meter. A basic, a better, and a relative equal to the high end meter brands. Why spend $600 for pride and bragging rights when go $175 to $275 you could buy something as accurate. .0000V difference is close enough for my OCD Why jump straight from El cheapo to Fluke as an example? Guessing $$$

Why cant they just make a meter that does it all? Tired of switching between meters all the damn time.. and explaining which meters are for what is just getting annoying.. fluke =hv and amp. Klein for auto range. And chinesium weng fung for ohm and capacitance... lol..

Totally Z Ack. Can be frustrating. Sadly meters have to be specialised fir the task they are designed for. If I find a meter that does everything I will let you know. It could make us very rich. HaHa!
