Best knife I own! If anyone who is a knife collector don't over look this knife. It's not a $500 + knife, however, it's a beauty. One would be remiss to not own it. The kydex is super tight. I cut my finger trying to get it out of the sheath. So, I purchased the leather one. Because of this review, I purchased one. Great review and thanks.

Glad you found your new favorite! I have two and one of them had a sheath a bit tighter than the other. The Kydex actually is quite nice and I've made mine much smoother on the tight one by using a little bit of Flitz Ceramic Sealant which creates a very slick surface so no more binding. Works out easier than having to reheat the kydex.

I just ordered the orange handled one, so I can locate it if I set it down for less than $150 delivered. I've never had a super steel knife. I sometimes process deer and most knives get noticeably dull in the last half of skinning, and quartering. I don't think this one will. Also, I love the "knife steel nerds" channel, and am stoked about having a knife in the steel Dr Thomas created. He's an amazing resource. Thanks for the detailed overview!

i’ll say one thing, viper runs their magnacut at 60-61 hrc. recommended hardness for smaller knives is around 63 hrc, so this knife will not have as much edge retention as the steel is capable of. however even at 61 it will have edge retention similar to something like s35vn while being FAR tougher and borderline rustproof. magnacut at 60-61 hrc is also ridiculously easy to sharpen up, so even though it will dull a bit faster than harder magnacut this knife should be super easy to maintain. if the ergonomics and geometry work well for you, then this knife should serve you well and will likely do better than another knife with worse ergos in harder magnacut. you picked a solid choice for a skinning knife though i think.

@@acid6urns Thank you for the breakdown. I had heard that Viper ran a lower hrc than is optimal. I also heard that they brought it up a bit. I am a bit necrotic about those kinds of details, but for just under $150 delivered, I couldn't pass it up. I have heard only good things about the ergonomics from the few reviews I found. It'll be fun to have a magnacut knife either way. If I can field dress a deer without noticeable dulling I'll be happy. Cheers

i want to pick up one of the magnacut alpha scouts but god damn almost $300 is a lot of money. the alpha guide is cool too and i know they make cheaper upgraded models in s35vn instead of magnacut, but for the larger blade on the guide i’d want the extra toughness from magnacut

i've been waiting to get the bocote handle for a good minute. It's reminiscent of Silvestrelli's _Gianghi._ Viper usually runs their steels on the lower end of HRC and i'd guess they're treating it around 61-62

How would you rate this overall compared to the Buck Alpha Scout 664? Both are very comparable

For the Buck Alpha scout I can only compare it by looking up details since I don't own one. Seems to be an S35VN versus magna cut and a bit shorter and perhaps an ounce or so lighter. It's hard to beat the handle contouring in ergos on this Viper knife and the price on it may actually be a bit lower on the Viper versus the buck. Tough to say whether you're getting a better steel with magna cut or S35VN. HRC might be a bit higher on the Viper but they aren't stating what it is. My personal preference looking only at the stats would be for this Viper handy....

Two questions..... How were you able to get the kydex sheath? I have only found this knife with the leather sheath. White Mtn is a great company but they have this knife priced $50-60 more than other USA vendors. Why should I buy from them unless they offer a promo code?

The Kydex comes with all models at White Mountain with the exception of the wood handled knives. Feel free to order elsewhere if you get a better price.

Standard edge on Viper (and most other factory edges) is 20° 👍

@@OGBladeReviews - But I believe to get the most out of magnacut with its very high toughness, you're "supposed to" go with 17 degrees. That's what I've read for whatever that's worth.

Can't locate that info, but as Dr. Larrin Thomas has recently mentioned, more important is edge geometry and angle maintained by user.

Where did you hear that? Assume you're referencing HRC? My Viper blades have really held their edges quite well in the real world. Would like to know more about your info ...

I've heard the same. Italian makers like Lionsteel, Viper & MKM run many of the super steels to soft. A few people on KZbin have tested Italian done Magnacut & it usually scores in the high 50s (this is to soft for magnacut).

Being older I've heard a lot of things too in my life but don't believe them all. Here is the fact sheet for Lion Steel knives. Magna cut is listed as 60.5 to 62.5. I can live with that and I do trust that they are trying to achieve the balance they need for their edge geometry and grinds. "I've heard that" isn't always a factual statement.
