There's a reason people rave about the Norwegian fjords and that's because they are stunning! And they're easiest accessed from a cruise, which is why so many people cruise here even if they're not regular cruisers. This video is a compilation of the best Norwegian fjords cruise shore excursions/activities you can do either on an organised ship shore excursion or by arranging it independently. I did this from the recent cruise I did with P&O Cruises on their newest ship Iona, but most ships offer similar excursions and/or you could organise them all independently. Doing so might even be cheaper! And very often you can just leave the ship and do a hike from port independently, so it helps to do a bit of research before sailing. The ports featured here include Alesund, Stavanger, Olden and Haugesund. Of course there are many other cruise ports on different itineraries which I'll hopefully cover another time. Activities include hiking up Mt Aksla in Alesund, hiking to Pulpit Rock from Stavanger (this is one of the world's best hikes and is phenomenal), yoga in a mountain retreat in Olden, a hike to Briksdal Glacier from Olden, rib-boat safaris, cray-fishing, island-hopping, sea eagle spotting and more. I traveled in April when there was still snow on the ground. In summer this won't be the case. The fresh air, the stunning, massive panoramas, the crispness of everything makes Norway a fantastic holiday/vacation destination. I've been three times now and never tire of it.

I know - we had amazing sunshine and I was even sunbathing on deck would you believe, but on high ground there was still snow and it was cold. And it was cold in the mornings too!! Have you been to Norway? XXX

This looks great! I am going in summer, do you recommend booking the hikes as an excursion or just trying it yourself?

I think the Pulpit Rock hike is definitely worth booking the excursion because it's fiddly to get there and back from the starting point by yourself and not actually even cheaper. There's no bus which has the right timings (or at least there public transport is tricky and would be nerve-wracking to rely on to get back to the ship on time) and a taxi would have been more expensive than the excursion, unless you were a large group of 5 people together, then a taxi might work out cheaper. It's about an hour each way by car/bus. The Olden one might be easier to do by yourself, but it wouldn't hurt to do the ship excursion - it's not overly expensive and Norwegian taxis aren't cheap. The Alesund hike you can DEFINITELY do by yourself!!! Hope that helps!
