I'm a fan of Erica's awkward, silly take on life, but I was deeply disturbed by her 'joke' about someone freaking out when confronted with a man with no hands. As a teen, I worked at a neighborhood convenience store toward the end of the Vietnam War. More than a few times I waited on young men in their 20s wearing old combat fatigues with some form of disfigurement - missing legs, arms, hands, eyes, and serious facial damage. It was hard to absorb at 16. When I tried to help them, they all refused because they were trying to make their own way in the world. I spoke to them and admired their courage. I can't comprehend the shallow insensitivity of drawing attention to a man's disability and expecting him to give you a heads up.
