The Priest being able to notice when Fleabag is talking to us is such a soulmate moment... Like how Fleabag saw the fox follow him at the end 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Having rewatched episode 5 ohsomanytimes, I have a theory! The priest arrives not planning to sleep with Fleabag ("I can't have sex with you because I'll fall in love with you.") but he hears what Fleabag says to the camera ("We're going to have sex. Oh my God, we're going to have sex.") & gives in. 💚 Thoughts?

@@lm4646 I don't think he can see/hear her talking to the camera. The camera isn't real in their world, it's imaginary. Fleabag imagines an audience watching her, and she uses humor to cope so she tells the (imaginary) audience jokes all the time, especially when in uncomfortable situations. The priest notices that she's "going somewhere", she disappears for a second in her mind to make a joke at the camera or just look at it. That's why in the end, when she learns to love herself and realizes she waves at the camera, saying goodbye. She doesn't need it anymore, she doesn't need imaginary friends to tell jokes to, to make her life look like a joke to.
@ermtnz
@ermtnz 3 жыл бұрын
@@lm4646 the priest serves as a mirror for fleabag. That's why he's able to see her break through the 4th wall. Just like fleabag feels as though she's being watched by the audience at all times and needs to be validated by this imaginary audience, the priest has the exact same relationship with God
@marciocruz4758

@@m_milos there is also a moment where she mixes up the "camera" and the priest, and says "his beautiful neck" while talking to him, and says to the camera what she was going to tell him... so she's actually playing this "talking to the camera" in her mind
@dantan7881
@dantan7881 2 жыл бұрын
@@marciocruz4758 Exactly. This is because the audience is Fleabag's inner thoughts, her deepest emotions that she doesn't divulge to anyone but herself. That's when she starts mixing up the internal commentary as her relationship deepens with the Priest, it was an indicator that she was "letting him in". The fox is kind of the same for the priest I think. His deepest desires coming to haunt him. That's why at the end we see Fleabag seeing the actual fox and sending it to follow the Priest. As for Fleabag at the end, I think it signals her maturity. She realises she can finally let people in, despite this still being a painful, risky thing. She doesn't need that internal monologue anymore to process her feelings.

Lol you’ve kind of proven my point 😂 it’s not feminist in that it’s trying to push any particular agenda. It’s feminist because it subverts the typical portrayal of women in film. It shows the ugliest and hard-to-swallow sides of this woman. It challenges societal ideas about sex positivity. It is about love, yes, but it’s about how a woman grows and finally allows herself to open up to love.

Ok. I'm just gonna say it. Flea bay's father seems incredibly selfish. He acts indifferently when she shows up seeking him, he doesn't help her when she struggles financially, he doesn't get involved when her godmother slaps her or treats her like a servant. I understand that the point is not to enable her, but he seems to keep abandoning her. That's why her sister feels responsible for her, I think.

I also think, beyond the reason he just “gets” Fleabag, that the reason the Priest can see the 4th wall, is quite literally because of his vocation, as a Priest. The 4th wall is Fleabag talking to something that isn’t there, that she can’t see or feel or touch, but that gives her comfort and that she turns to in need of guidance. That is exactly what he does with God.

The priest noticing fleabag's fourth wall breaking is phenomenal. It gives another dimension to it where it's not only for storytelling, but shows that fleabag is in fact talking to this invisible viewer, and the priest is the only one capable of noticing that
