Haha love that about the Baseball. When I was playing T-Ball I felt the same when playing short-stop. I would stare through my glove into the sky but one day almost had a ball connect with my head... ...Yknow the main reason why everyone remembers this game so fondly is because they had or knew someone with a guide. Which is fine, but most people who say the game itself is fantastic need to remember how their first main experience with it was like. AKA Manual/NP or no guide?

I honestly find the original Zelda to be one of the most perfect games ever. If I had any comments on how to improve it (other than obviously helping the early translations to English from NES games) would be to somehow incorporate the bombable-wall sword tap sound from Link to the Past here--for both walls and bushes. However that could be done, it would be infinitely helpful.

Funny story about lvl3 from my childhood. My grandparents had a book with a swastika on it in their library(I don't know what book it was. I was vehemently NOT allowed to read it. They are also very not racist, btw.) but I wanted to read it because I played Zelda A LOT and my 6 year old mind was all, "Hey that's the lvl3 map from Zelda." Grandmama actually yelled at me for asking to read it.

36:40 There exists video of me "playing soccer" that's very similar to Dan's! In roughly 1990 at 5ish years old I was on a laughable co-ed YMCA team with all my friends + two girls. Apparently I liked holding hands with one of the girls and, every 5 minutes or whatever I'd stop what I was doing, leave the field, go pick dandilions I'd spotted, and bring them back on to the field to give to one of the girls... _completely_ ignoring everything soccer related. XD This apparently was like clockwork and happened even if it meant walking away from the ball I was in control of. My team learned very quickly to ignore us. The best/worst part was my dad on said VHS tape getting FURIOUS with me! Instead of just shrugging off that his son wasn't an athlete, he liked to scream at me that he was never going to come to any of my games EVER again unless I actually played and ignored the damn blonde. I didn't play much soccer as a kid... or any sports ever. I wonder why....

So many people get the Lvl3 map shape wrong & it caused Nintendo so much grief. The map shape is actually the original Hindu based symbol with the arms flat like the map shape (called a hindu swastika ) symbolizing surya ('sun'), prosperity and good luck. The bad one is turned 45 degrees giving it a slant. You would think Dan being Jewish would know the difference.

I can only take so much of these old NES games before I have to quit, especially the ones that zap all your health when you die & come back and don't give you an easy way to regain it. In the process of getting my health back up I die, get booted back to the starting point, and bash my head against the proverbial brick wall over and over and OVER until I finally get a break and move on to the next dungeon or whatever... only to die in the next screen or two over. And then I ragequit. If it weren't for savestates, I'd never have beaten the likes of Zelda or Castlevania. I know the stigma around savestates, but these games are just too frustratingly hard for me otherwise.

I still think the game is awesome, and I've played through _most_ of the game without save states, but savestating through these older games is totally understandable. We live in a different world now, where most us have more than one or two games we can play over the course of a year and also, once you grow past a certain point in your childhood, the repetition becomes pretty difficult to handle. I could only beat Zelda II with savestates. A lot of savestates. Like, if I managed to get a hit in on a boss without getting hit back, I'd save a state so that I wouldn't have to repeat that single hit. That game is tough.

+Alpha Facepalm Yeah, it's pretty awesome. A lot of indie games take very direct inspiration from classics like this one. While I could be all old and annoying and chastise you for not knowing, I'm just glad that new games are coming out that can help younger people who missed this part of gaming have some context for why it was so cool. I'm young too, by the way, in my early 20s, so these games came out before I was born. I just happened to be two generations behind when I was growing up due to my family not having a ton of money so I got to experience these games as if I was a kid born in the 80s. I'm actually really happy things turned out that way, having an appreciation and nostalgia for this stuff is really fun.

I would say that it's an extremely overrated game, along with Ocarina of Time, but even an overrated main series Zelda game is a good game. Z2, on the other hand, is an extremely _underrated_ entry in the series and doesn't get the credit it deserves for the things it brought to the series.

The Legend of Zelda is not a well made game, even by 1986 standards. Having to try a single use per screen item to burn every single bush on the overworld to find a game-mandatory dungeon isn't good game design
