Our favorite city in Mexico so far! We're continuing our RV Mexico adventure to the colonial city of Guanajuato. With help from our friends at GTO Walking Tours, we get the inside scoop on the rich culture (and delicious FOOD!) of this often-overlooked beautiful city in a whirlwind day AND night tour.
0:00 Intro
0:45 Driving through the tunnels of Guanajuato in an RV
1:15 Starting our tour with GTO Walking Tours, history, the river, and more
2:47 Tasting famous bakery items in Guanajuato
3:42 Trying out authentic Gorditas including Chicharron Prensado, heuvos con chorizo
5:14 Guanajuato connection to Don Quixote and Cervantino Festival
6:43 Sampling a local favorite tamales wrapped with Swiss Chard instead of banana leaves
7:20 So many unique flavors of chocolate truffles at Xocolat boutique
7:58 Exploring Mercado Hidalgo (giant city market), sampling fresh carnitas tacos
9:18 Tasting local Ice Cream flavors
9:53 Climbing the public stairs to Monumento Al Pipila and even more stairs to our RV park
10:35 Walking through the tunnels and exploring Guanajuato
10:58 Meeting Tim Leffel, founder of GTO Walking Tours to try some flavored Pulque
12:15 Heading to a Rooftop bar for Tequila tastings and learn more about the walking tours with Tim
13:39 Trying out our first Micheladas and even more tacos!
14:44 Mezcal vs Tequila, cocktails, and delicious worm salt
16:08 Elote or Mexican street corn in a cup
Our day guide, John, immediately brought the knowledge and tasty treats as we explored Guanajuato. Being in the same state as the more well known San Miguel de Allende, visitors to Guanajuato benefit from smaller tourist crowds, lower prices, and a much larger city to explore! A UNESCO World Heritage city dating back to 1559, Guanajuato is filled with colonial buildings built alongside and on TOP of an ancient river. The bridges to cross the river eventually became a "second floor" to the city with buildings on tip, and later full-fledged tunnels that criss-cross and enable people and cars to move around town. We traveled UP and DOWN all over Guanajuato as we sampled local dishes like Acelga Tamales (made with swiss chard!) to keep our energy.
After a pit stop back at the RV to change (we found camping INSIDE Guanajuato to make walking into the city center much easier!), it was time to switch gears and guides. Tim Leffel, founder of GTO Walking Tours, met up with us in front of the famous Teatro Juarez for an evening of tacos, tequila, and fun. We roamed local haunts, tried "Pulque," one of the oldest beverages anywhere, and had our fair share of tacos, tequila and sweets!
Built into steep hills, large sections of Guanajuato are only accessible by foot. Remember to take breaks, enjoy a snack or three, and consider a guide to help you navigate!
Our thanks again to John and Tim from gtowalkingtours.com for providing their time, knowledge and sharing a lot of laughs. If that wasn't enough, be sure to stick around for some amazing fire dancing by John at the end of our video!

Thank you for your mixed video of Mexican culture and food (drinks!). Your way of traveling comes close to mine: In the morning - museum or castle, then local restaurant; after lunch - museum or church, then café with local cake(s); afternoon and evening - tour of the place, photos at good light; evening/night - dinner at local restaurant, local beer/wine. Walking a lot eats up all the calories. Enjoy your time!!!! Greetings from Bavaria, Germany.
