I wouldn’t agree with that. I think he more or less doubts the humans having any chance of defeating the titans and venturing outside of the walls. He was high questionable on using Eren towards the beginning of the show because he wasn’t sure if there was any chance of real success.

Jean has the ability to speak directly to people without wasting energy or truth with needless diplomacy or any phony niceness. It's not mean or nice for the sake of it, it's just blunt and direct, but genuinely coming from a good place. But even more impressive is that he can talk to himself this way too. What an awesome character. McFarland voices him fantastically and he is a good example to use in a sub dub debate.

I've watched it multiple times since the year began, because of dragging people I know, person by person, into it after my personal viewing. They'll only watch if I watch with them so I'm on my fifth viewing. Doesn't get old. There are so many nuanced moments of foreshadowing, it's hard to catch them all even in a few viewings tbh.
