the 3rd time I saw her live, was 1980....Im pretty sure it was Summer. She was touring on her "Released" album, and she was performing in my hometown Wash/DC for 2 nights at the Kennedy Center Opera House. My Mom and her boyfriend, who was a journalist for Jet magazine took me. I'll never forget it was just the 2nd time seeing her solo, after she LaBelle broke up. And Patti was singing off-mic', even in those days. She did a version of "Since I Dont Have You' that she would sing off-mic, towards the end of the song. And Im pretty sure she did it when she sang "Isnt It A Shame?". In those days, her voice was just unreal...the power, the phrasing, the sassiness and playfulness. All of it was a sensory overload. Her voice was as Grace Jones has called it "too good to be true". She's almost 80 yrs old, and STILL doing things with notes, we dont hear from any other singers out here, young or older.

She walked away from the mic 🎤 at MSG in the 80. It was un real. Her voice and power was stamina was incredible. She's a different type of singer.

The average singer now would lose their career and vocal cords if they dared try. this vocal feat of power which has been her 👑 and glory since the 50's singing in church holding down the soprano section. Other female groups may have outsold them in terms of record sales but, none could touch them when it came to sanging in the realm of the female groups . All the members of her group can sing without the aid of a microphone.
