Many mainland Indians who love Bollywood oldies don't know SD Burman was born to a Manipuri Meitei mother named Nirmala Devi. SDB's father Prince Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman (1854-1931) was also born to a Manipuri Meitei mother named Keisam Jatiswari Devi. Nabadwipchandra's father King Ishanchandra Dev Burman who ruled Tripura from 1849 to 1862 had four queens and three were Meitei ladies. It was a long-held tradition to have matrimonial alliances between the Royal Houses of Tripura and Manipur. A settlement called Mekhlipara in Agartala once flourished where relatives of Meitei Maharanis lived. The last Manipuri Meitei Princess married to the Tripura Prince is Tamphasana Devi by name, the daughter of Maharaj Bodhchandra, during whose reign Manipur merged with the Indian Union by signing an agreement on Sep 21, 1949. The present titular King of Manipur Maharaj Leishemba Sanajaoba, Rajya Sabha MP, is the grandson of Bodhchandra.
