the tone is pretty good but the main reason this sounds so good unlike the other versions (covers) you see on youtube .. is because the dynamics of the picking, vibrato, bends and switching between the pickups and are perfectly and beautifuly done by petrucci he pays good attention to those things unlike most of the guitarists I see who don't really give a shit about them

What a lovely guitar solo... Almost à la Gary Moore in a way (I'm fairly sure John thought of him when he recorded that piece), which is no small compliment from me. Fantastic musicianship by Petrucci (as always). Portnoy does compliment this solo in a perfect way with how he accentuates it, but it's cool to hear John's fluid playing on it's own too.

There's pretty much no way even an incredibly proficient guitarist like Petrucci could record this in one take. He can surely play it pretty much perfect, but a flawless take is a little bit beyond perfect :)
