The Piri Reis map does not "follow the layout of antarctica" The line there is copied from a speculation in an earlier map of the mythological "southern continent", which on that map is about 4 times the size of antarctica including the present ice.. The "Aircraft" are very clearly flying fish. Jade is only 6-7 on the Mohs scale.

Your explanation of birefringent calcite is garbled. The important property of this stone is that it can detect the polarization of light. The sky is strongly polarized 90° from the Sun, so when the sun is low on the horizon, or slightly below the horizon, but obscured by clouds, the Sunstone can determine its position by observing the polarization of the sky directly overhead, which is 90° from the Sun. I’ve experimented with this and found it to work, though it’s not super-precise.
