I did spin recovery training in gliders. Ok so they rotate a bit slower but I never really understood what the fuss was all about. Perhaps it helped to be well strapped into a bucket seat rather than just a lap belt and armchair :-) The take away lesson for me is the last phase... when you've stopped the spin and you're in a near vertical dive...you need to be careful not to pull too hard or you can cause a high speed stall. Getting stall buffeting at well above normal stall speed and nose down was something I hadn't expected even though I knew you can stall at any airspeed. Would be easy to mess up if you were recovering from an accidental spin at low altitude as the ground rush would sure encourage you to pull too hard. I've seen a few youtube airshow accident vids where they were only high enough for one mistake and made two.

As an A&P mechanic, aviation truly never does get old. I've worked on countless different airframes both jet and piston powered, military and civilian. I've been doing it for over 12 years now and I've always loved what I do. There aren't many jobs out there like that.

I'm going out on a wing here perhaps, but an A350 taking off with 1 engine, when painted in Airbus company livery with "Flightlab" taking off from what appears to be Toulouse airport (base of Airbus), is almost certainly carrying out a well planned test or certification flight, designed to measure or prove 1 engine take-off performance.

Many years ago I was leaving the Virginia coast area in a 737 size commercial aircraft and had been in the air about 10 or 15 minutes. It was nighttime and I was looking out my window at the shrinking lights on the ground. Much to my surprise a similar sized plane passed just underneath us so close that I could see the lights from the windows shining on its wings. No cell phones then, or, at least no phone cameras so no video to prove it and I didn't have my 35mm film camera handy. I did note the time and got a flight attendant's attention. She told me, a bit snippy, that that was impossible as that planes passing that close was prohibited. I replied, also a bit heated that prohibited didn't mean impossible. Upon landing in Atlanta I spoke to the pilot who was NOT snippy but turned a bit pale. He took down my time info and even contacted someone by radio. Asked me to wait if I could. He came back with the information that it had indeed occurred but that his plane, my plane, was where it was supposed to be but while I think the seperation was supposed to be something like 4,000 feet to a mile we has passed within less than a thousand. More like 500 feet. Which in the flight world was a near mid-air collision. I was just glad to be alive along with the two plane loads of folks that never knew how close we were to a very bad night. It was one of those moments, seein that other plane, that gets burned into your memory and while I have never dwelled upon it certain things can call it up. Have flown alot since then, commercial, private and military. There are always close calls. Some you know about, some you don't. Flying with 3rd world military is a story rich environment. rick in Tennessee. Lt. Col. Ret. (Foreign military) Military contractor with ours. Trauma and cancer magnet with both.

There was a time I was about to fly out of an airport for the first time ever (first time on a plane). I was looking at the planes taking off and landing from the waiting area and a Southwest plane took off fast and steep. I thought for sure it was going to stall, but it didn't. I was flying Southwest and this did not help my first flight jitters lol.
