The previous gen Lexus GX470, 4th gen 4Runner V8 full time 4WD, and 4th gen 4Runner V6 with 4WD selector to 4H pretty much function the same with an improved ATRAC over the 100 series LC/LX. The 120 series LC Prado platform have the torsen center differential whereas the 100 series LC platform has an open center differential. ATRAC is an iteration older on the 100 series. The manual FJ Cruiser 4WD is also full time 4WD and all FJ Cruiser 4WD's ATRAC is an improved version of the one on the 4th gen 4Runner/GX470. The 150 series LC Prado platform, aka the 5th gen 4Runner and GX460 perform similar off road as well. The Limited trim 5th gen 4Runner get the full time 4WD with torsen center differential like the GX460, except the GX460 can be optioned with MTS and crawl control. 5th gen 4Runner Limited doesn't get the off-road goodies available in the GX460 thus forcing buyer to get the 4Runner TRD Offroad/TRD Pro. ATRAC is a newer iteration on the 5th gen 4Runner and GX460 over the 120 series platform. North American LC 200/LX570 all came with torsen center differential whereas previous 100 series LC had an open center differential similar to a 90 series LC Prado/3rd gen 4Runner. The torsen center differential allow 60% power to rear and 40% power to front normally. If slip is detected, % power shifts away from the normal 60% rear/40% front ratio. Locking the center differential will lock the ratio to 50% front and 50% rear. Selectable factory lockers (rear and/or front) are available in oversea models, but not an option for US models. Oversea LC300/LX600 can be optioned with selectable front, center, and rear lockers. Maybe Toyota suspect most hardcore 4WD buyers will use aftermarket lockers from ARB or Harrop in the North American market. We are definitely not their biggest market for Land Cruisers.

I know you like the LX600 best, and maybe if I were to be daily driving on the highway on a regular basis, I would agree. However, the strength of the 4R TRD is where I lean towards because of the approach/departure angle. It is a shame that the front facing camera is just now an option. But as bad as you say it is, I am not going to trade up my 2018 just for that. An after market system would be cheaper and I still get all the great functionalities that have not changed since the 5th Gen. came out.
@chrispnw25472 жыл бұрын
Ever since Lexus has gotten a version of a Toyota vehicle, the company feels obligated to give the more advanced systems to the Lexus and require the customer to pay a lot more. You can see from the comments, many people simply want a 4-Runner sized vehicle option with the front, center, and rear locking differentials with KDSS and not be force to buy many option packages to get the right 'bones'. This should not cost more than $55k in 2022 and not require an $80K+ Lexus to get this level of functionality.

It's amazing how many car experts get this wrong. But an locked diff does not send the same amount of power to both sides it just locks wheel speed. Power is based on torque and torque is calculated based on friction or traction. So if both wheels are locked the wheel with the most traction produces more power Ironically its an open diff that will always split torque 50/50%. The reason only one wheel spins is because only enough torque necessary to spin the wheel to redline is sent to both wheels and divided evenly. And thats not enough torque to turn the other wheel. Engineering explained has many videos about this

How does a locker send equal power? If you have poor traction on one wheel you cannot send more torque to it than the traction can hold. . Locker bias torque and have equal RPM. Since power is torque * RPM that means they bias power. . Open diffs leverage the opposite wheel thus no wheel can receive more torque. ie equal torque or lift a wheel and neither get any torque. But RPM isn’t constant so they don’t have equal power as well.

Absolutely pathetic that they're putting the hybrid systems in these new vehicles because in 10 years the vehicle is literally trashed unless you can afford the $10,000 repair

I wonder how the Tacoma TRD 4x4 off-road would do vs the 4-runner on that course 🤷🏻... It's cool to see the best models & what they're capable of but 90% of people are not going to get those fully loaded pro models they're hardly available & the cost is a little over the top generally 🤦🏻

We did not have the Sequoia on the same day of this exact test. We had the Sequoia the next day, which was our day to film the review and the off-road test separate from this one. Toyota did not make one available for us to use in this specific video.

All really nice vehicles but no one is going to spend $60-80k and risk scratching up the vehicles off road. Lol. Better off buying a few years older pre-owned to use off road.
