@John Maxwell-everybody likes different oils but what test have they done on Harley engines or transmissions? Harley tests their oils on Harley components. I'm pretty sure they got together with their oil supplier to find the best additives for their bikes, especially if they're putting a warranty on their products.

Hey John. Love your videos. I have heard the arguments against putting Amsoil in all 3 holes before. What gave me the confidence to put it in the gear box is that Amsoil posts all their oil test sheets right on their website. I took some time and looked at their shock tests, breakdown tests, and other tests between their synthetic engine oil and their gear and tranny oils. The results of the tests showed that the engine oil performed at or better than the gear specific oil. That's why I imagine that they can guarantee their oil safe for all three holes. Understanding that they have no liability in making that claim, I can appreciate the scientific method they used to come to that conclusion. As always, YMMV. Also, you spoke about convenience. With the SE110 motor, it takes exactly 6qts if you add up all three holes. If you get 3 different oils, you wind up with a little left over in one jug and needing to buy a whole other quart to cover a couple of extra ounces needed for one of the gear boxes. Using the same oil for all three holes makes it very convenient when ordering my oil change kits. Harley would DEFINITELY convert me if they made the gear oils in quantities that actually matched the capacities of the cases they were being poured into.

I run AMSOIL and made my bike shift a lot smoother plus it eliminated the surge to move in gear, made it a lot quieter, I was so impressed by this oil I became a dealer. If you really wanna see the difference go watch the videos comparing different oils. The AMSOIL came out on top on each test against all oils. Plus I found out that the Harley oil is made by Sunoco, not a very reputable oil in my opinion.

Then why isn’t it ever supported by and sold by Parts Unlimited, Tucker Rocky, Western PowerSports etc? Why is the only real profit going to the guy who sells it, like you, not the dealer at .50 CEnts profit per bottle? It makes Zero sense to sell that oil at your store.

Great video and nice job explaining that "what ever makes you sleep at night" is what you should run. As a retired automotive instructor I have given the oil brand speech to hundreds of high school students and I agree with everything you discussed. I have been running Syn3 in all 3 holes since my first touring bike in 2003. NEVER had an oil related issue but I think I will switch to the new gear oil from the motor company next trans change. Yes, everyone will have a reason to run their favorite oil but you are correct, it is more important to have oil in the bike, the brand is secondary. One addition is that the oil should "meet or exceed manufactures specifications". To many people run an oil that does not meet the specifications and then feel there was something wrong with the oil when it was not rated to do the job asked of it. Keep up the good work John!

Well, here's what I can share on the topic from my personal experience: running Redline Racing's 20w50 V twin oil has ALWAYS made my bikes run 10-12 degrees cooler, as per temp gun on the heads. It has also ALWAYS quieted some of the mechanical noises down. So, I'm not saying it's the best oil ever, but it's pretty clear too me that it's working some kinda magic. It's expensive as hell, but for less heat and less noise (therefore one would assume better lubrication and less friction)? I'll spend the extra $$$

Ever since I bought my Harley all I use is Harley synthetic. Right after the first thousand miles I changed all of the fluids to Harley synthetics. That's all I have ever used. I take excellent care of my bike. Even my local dealership where I buy my parts have told me that I did not need to change my oil as much as I was. They told me since my bike was still under warranty I did not have nothing to fear by waiting longer to change my oil. I explained to them I wasn't going to sit around all summer waiting for the dealership to replace my engine. On one occasion I had changed my oil on a Saturday and the following Saturday I had taken my bike for a long ride. Coming back there was a huge accident and on this stretch of road you have to stay on it until you get across the bridge. It was a hot August day and my engine was so hot that it was burning me through my jeans. The oil temperature was 300°. I had to put the bike on the shoulder and get off of it. Finally the road opened up and once I was back up the speed everything went back to normal. As soon as I was back on the other side of the bridge I went straight to Harley. Everyone there knows me I have been using the same dealership for years. So I went inside bought everything to do another oil change and that's when the parts guy asked me what happened to the stuff you got last week. I told him what had happened and he went on to tell me that I didn't need to change the oil again that it was synthetic and it's made for that heating cycle. He did not persuade me enough not to change my mind so I got everything I needed. When I drain all of the fluids they all still look brand new. Even though the fluids looked clean I still had no problem with my decision to change it again. Every year when we come back from Daytona from bike week I change all my fluids before riding season back home. Enjoyed your video look forward to watching more of them.

I love Ams oil. Started running it in 2005 on my motocross bikes. Never had any troubles. Eventually started running it in my rockets, my sportsters and now I run it in my duramax. I support amsoil all the way. 👍. Now Johns really got me wanting a new heritage and if I do get one, guess what I'll run in it. 😉. That heritage is sexy 🤤🤤🤤🤤

I prefer "wet clutch" type lubes for the primary. Im not a HD Fanboy when it comes to lubes. I run what i trust from over 34 years of riding / wrenching my own bikes. BTW, im not a HD only fanboy , i own 6 different bikes, including metrics.

I’ve been very pleased with Shaffer’s fluids, but I like the fact that the Motor Company offers a very good gear oil as an option for those who don’t run synthetic. Like he says, the most important part is that there’s actually oil in the bike.

Ahhhh, glad to hear someone make sense. I sell oil in a bike shop and mostly this is what I also say. As long as you can find an oil that's from a reputable brand or seller, and the oil is made for your purpose, and you're running the correct amount of clean oil, go for it. Stressing out over BelRay vs Motorex vs Castrol vs Amsoil etc is gonna give you a heartburn. Don't, however, put long life car oils in there esp. if you have a wet clutch. That's going to be possibly really expensive. All that said: Of course more expensive synthetic oils *are* better. Conspiracy theories in a *very* contested market are just silly. We can look at dozens of videos and reports showing you that they *do* last better. Don't believe the myths that "synthetics make your bike leak" or "synthetic makes your clutch slip" and whatever. What remains for you as a buyer and user to decide is how much is that better oil worth to you and what can you afford.

I can attest to the protection provided by Amsoil. But make certain it is the variety made for air cooled engines. It can handle the higher heat better. My 2000 wide glide now has 85,000 miles and a recent check of the cam tensioners showed they are only half worn down. I plan to replace them just to be safe but that tells me the Amsoil is doing an amazing job of lubricating the chain and the tensioners.

I bought my first Evo in 85. Running a straight was definitely a no-no. That being said I live in Canada. I used ask service techs about running synthetic. I was told no, to slippery. After a while I went and had my top end cleaned up. Then I started using Amsoil. I will never go back to fossil. Harley doesn't make any oil. They tender it out to the lowest bidder, so essentially the cheapest synthetic you can find is your SYN3. I have had people and read that SYN3 was the junkiest oil. Too thin and a lot of noise. They went to another brand of synthetic. I found it underhanded that Harley would say don't use synthetic till they started marketing their own crap brand.

"I was told no, to slippery." - bullcrap, tell them to educate themselves. " Then I started using Amsoil." - 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin is PAO based, real synthetic. "They tender it out to the lowest bidder" - same with Honda GN, Yamalube and others. And they have different suppliers in different markets. Nothing special, everybody does that.
