Best Packing System for Amtrak Overnight Train Travel in a Room or Roomette

Packing cubes are great . I also have a small first aid kit that I keep in my backpack. Comes in handy as you are walking around and need something. The slightest little problem can drive you cray. My list is - eye drops - floss - band aides - alcohol wipes - cleaner for glasses - tweezers - nail clippers - small amounts of med - small knife. I has helped me when traveling. I you wear glasses, bring an old pair as a backup. I would be in trouble if I lost or broke my glasses.

All great points! I hadn't thought of eye drops, I will add that to my kit. Also, need a spare pair of glasses too, yes I would be in trouble if I lost my glasses. Thank you!

Wow! I'd taken a few Amtrak trips for 1 night, but saw your video just before going on a 9 day solo trip: California Zephyr to Emeryville. Change trains to Coast Starlight (which turned into a mini disaster due to flooding on the tracks, and taking a commuter train without private rooms to Bakersfield & then a 2 hour bus to LA). 3 nights in LA and then the SW Chief from LA to Chicago. First, your video made me feel less anxious about traveling solo. Second, your recommendation of the duffle bag was genius. I went out immediately & bought the 45 gallon Eddie Bauer bag. It was so much easier to open than my suitcase in the small train rooms, and made a big difference for packing separately for the hotel vs. the train. I already had the packing cubes and they're great in addition. Some additional tips: I loved having my 3-in-1 charging cube with me. It simultaneously can charge airpods, apple watch, and phone and has a long enough cord to reach the sometimes not convenient outlet in the Amtrak rooms. I wish I'd remembered to bring a case for my eye glasses. Thanks for this video - so glad I watched it before my big trip!

I love, love love that Eddie Baurer tote bag... the side pockets and drawstring top are new from when I got one year's ago... I also have the same Thule backpack, but mine is a pretty green and I added some ribbon for outside attachment points. My suitcase is an Osprey Fairview, because I found I absolutely dislike dealing with pulling and wheels. As long as I am healthy enough to carry my suitcase or wear it as a backpack, the luggage with wheels is staying at home. You have a great system Thank you for sharing it. ❤😊

I DREAM of traveling with a backpack, rather than a wheeled suitcase but traveling for work requires extra outfits, so boo hoo. The Eddie Bauer tote is pretty sweet and I added ribbon to my suitcase too, such a small thing that makes a big difference. Thanks for sharing!

@@AlexTravelsSolo I can totally understand having to carry extra stuff for work trips. I Fortunately did not have to travel for work. My husband did enough work travel for both of us. He never did learn to pack light but he was always prepared. He new the ins and outside of airports and air travel. I never did get him on an Amtrak train or a bus. My favorite way to travel to an adventure.

Great video! Thanks! I’m still working on traveling lighter. I just finished 6 weeks in Europe. I like bamboo underwear because I wash it out at night and it’s dry in the morning. That way I only need about 3 pairs. Same with compression socks for when I travel all day with my legs down. What’s your favorite Amtrak route?

My favorite Amtrak route is probably the California Zephyr given the beautiful views. I have not tried bamboo clothing yet but this may be a sign for me to just do it!! 🙂6 weeks in Europe sounds like a dream... any places you'd recommend for solos?

@@AlexTravelsSolo I took transatlantic cruise both ways on Princess and Queen Mary coming back. I went to Bible study every morning on both ships and met lovely believers which was a blessing. Cunard had solo meetups twice daily which was great and I made friends. Water color class daily on Cunard was fun and I met lots of nice folks. Also sat at shared table at meals and tea and was nice to meet folks. I was with friends in Germany and Spain but on my own in Portugal for 9 days which was kind of lonely . I think cruising is the best way for me to return to Europe in the future. It’s safe and so easy to meet people. It was hard handling my luggage alone in the European airports with all the steps so I had to use a wheelchair. There are seldom jetways to the planes, only steps. They lost my luggage right before the Queen Mary so I had to buy a new suitcase and clothes and toiletries in 3 hours right before I boarded the ship. Very stressful!

Goodness! 3 hours to buy everything you'd need must have been so stressful. Cruising is lovely and I agree, the best way to travel to Europe safely. Ha! They do not believe in elevators of any kind over there... lol, but I get it, historical architecture. But airports though... it's rough with no jetways. Thank you for sharing your insights on cruising solo. I am booked for September on my next one and I'm so looking forward to it. I will share it with you all.
