If I am not retired yet but can work from home/remote. I assume I could do a rentista visa?
@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica
@UNBRIDLEDLivinginCostaRica 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, YES, you should be able to get the "Rentista Residency" if you are able to put $60,000 in a bank...and it is NOT a visa, but Temporary Residency that you can upgrade to Permanent after a few years. However, Costa Rica does have another category, NOT many lawyers tell you about....for "Self employed" and Costa Rica is or wants to have another category they are going to call "Digital Nomads" since they are beginning to realize that many people work from home on the internet. The last two options I think will be much better than the Rentista. But I don't have all the facts and I'm NOT a lawyer...just some things for you to think about or research when talking to a lawyer.

@@anniesshenanigans3815 ..Panama is also a dollar economy. You do not have to pay the 3% foreign conversion fee. The one thing that has kept me from making the leap to a pensionado visa is the Caja. I have Tricare Insurance for life that pays outside the USA, and my income is a VA disability and SSDI. Not even the IRS in the States can touch my blood money, and I'll be damned if I'm going to give 10% of it to a foreign government. Everything in me is screamin' for this move to CR, so IF this legislation (which strangely I've only heard of here) passes the crippled and heavily protested congress down there, The last objection I have to relocating will be gone.

Unfortunately...from my understanding and I am not an Attorney, but I believe EVERYONE who gets their Residency must then pay 10% of their DECLARED income for CAJA (health insurance). It is a small sacrifice to live in what feels like paradise and the rent or cost of living is so affordable.

I really don’t know the answer to that...but talking to a good attorney in Costa Rica could answer that question. I do KNOW people who declared a LOT (I don’t know why and they paid a lot) I know people who only declared a little....so that they would NOT have to pay 10% on everything. I am not saying to be dishonest...I am just giving the facts.

When I first came to Costa Rica you were not forced to join the Caja. I did join voluntarily and paid $38.00 a month, that was about 20 years ago. The country which is broke started forcing all foreign residents to join the Caja a few years ago. I pay about $85.00 a month now thru ARCR which has a group plan. I have never used the Caja, my Union pays most of my medical down here so long as I get the bill in English and Dollars, which at times can be a hassle. Most private doctors will tell you the Caja is only good for emergencies. That 10% is a lot of bunk, if you tell them what expenses you incur each month that 10% will gradually lessen.

c.r. needs to make this as easy as panama for people to retire there....i am married to a tica she has dual citizenship but i would still need to jump through hoops; i find this crazy and unnecessary ...and the car stuff is just insane.it comes down to greed of government to screw over persons wanting to come and live there...bigger reason is most ticas do not pay taxes to feed the kitty and fat cat pensions...everywhere i go in c.r. the locals evade taxes like the plague but make loads of cash under the table...
