Grace's scream right at the beginning is not an ordinary nightmare. It's the realisation of what she has done to her children and herself. Also the scene where Grace is loading the shotgun for the first time, *she can be seen pausing in a recollective moment* after she slams the breach shut. This is most likely due to her faint realization of _déja vu_ , most likely alluding to her suicide by using the same gun. It is subtle, but noticeable!

Nicole Kidman should have been nominated for the Oscars for this incredible performance. What a great, spooky, creepy film.
@timeofgifts Жыл бұрын
Nicole Kidman was nominated that year for 'Moulin Rouge'. The film critic in 'The Economist' wrote she would probably win for 'Moulin Rouge' but win for the wrong role; that she should have won for 'The Others'. A wonderfully claustrophobic performance, as if reining in everything in her personality other than her discipline & the fascinated horror of Hell, although 'Augustinian Catholicism' plays a role in Irish literature (Oh happy school english lessons!). The moment when I twigged the twist was when Kidman told the servants she had ordered the occupying Germans out of the house & forbade their return and I thought 'Well, that's impossible'

@randomjunk1977 Жыл бұрын
@m4tth3w967 I'm pretty sure that's why I was kinda meh on this one when I first saw it. It was recently enough that "I see dead people" was pretty much still a meme and this is basically the exact same twist: the main character was the ghost the whole time. They kinda added another layer to it at least, and the movie is certainly well done, but if you were a movie-goer around 1999-2001 the reveal on this did feel a bit like "Oh, so it's just the Sixth Sense again" Imagine if some other sci-fi movie came out in like 1982 where the main villain was suddenly revealed to be the hero's father. No one at the time would be faulted for being like "Oh, so we're just doing Empire Strikes Back? Okay." Watching The Others 20 years later (damn I'm old) it probably come off less derivative than it did at the time.

The twist in 'The Others" is terrific, of course. It's conceptually great, too, though. In haunting stories, it's easy to imagine the ghosts invisibly see and hear everything the living people do, like creepy voyeurs. But in this film, the living and the dead only perceive each other some of the time, so they are both "haunting" each other. And the dead are sometimes in denial and imagine they're still alive, so how could a stranger possibly be in their house? Must be tresspassers! it's great.

The dad was killed on the battlefield, which is where he has to stay. The piano scene for example, you’re just up playing the piano and then something’s messing with the door, swinging it back and forth? Of course you’d slam the door and lock it. I can see why Nicole Kidman’s character lost her mind as well, being trapped in the house all the time with two children that can’t be anywhere near any light so you have strict rules and can’t just go anywhere, your husband has been missing and then is presumed dead, the loneliness, the isolation and stress would get to anyone- but hopefully not to the terrible degree she took it to! At the time he made this film, he was well into his 80s and was, sadly, almost completely blind and totally deaf - he had been deaf for most of his life, believe it or not! He sadly passed away not too long after completing this film.

One of the most effective psychological thrillers ever. It plays so much with the usual horror tropes but takes them different directions... or sets you up and then doesn't use it, or uses it in a non-traditional way. It very much brings you into the character's isolation and you feel like you're a part of their little group, like it's happening to you to. And they keep it going until literally the last 5 minutes of the film when they nail you with that twist that flips the whole damn thing on its head.

Not the first time this sort of twist was done, but I don't know if it was ever done as effectively in any media. This is a perfect example of subverting expectations, where all the clues are there and become crystal clear in hindsight, so the result makes sense, and that's what makes it feel good. I love this movie, but I'm also a big fan of ghost stories. If you read this Ashleigh, add "The Uninvited" (1944) to your list. It's great. Also, sure, "I'm Victor", but it feels like a wasted opportunity that "smothered by love" wasn't the secret phrase!

When photography was new it was rare and expensive to get photos made. After people died, especially children, people wanted photos of dearly beloved. For adults they would take pictures on death bed or in coffin. For children, they would often dress them up, prop them up as if they were alive. Sometimes take photos of the family or siblings with the departed child.

Woo! You're hitting all the GOOD ones this Hallowbeans season! This film is TOP TIER, not just for a scary movie but as a film in general. So excited for Practical Magic and Sleepy Hollow. A couple of my favorites!

One of those movies that you can STILL Watch again and again simply because of the incredicble atmosphere and the really gorgeous cinematography. When i watched that movie for the first time it was a year or so after it came out. My best buddy had the DVD and we watched it on his home theater sound system and WHOAAA does this really elevate the movie. Usually i think surround sound is often kinds gimmicky and cheap but here it reaaaaalllly enhances the whole spooky vibes. Especially the voices during the scene where the kids are in their bedroom and the sister brings one of the ghosts to her brother. The whole movie also just always reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe's story "the fall of the house of Usher." because of the huge but almost empty mansion and the ever present but unspoken dark secret that hovers over the house. Really one heck of a modern classic.

Very happy to see this as a reaction! Not as common of a film to see reactors do! Reminds me why you're Ashleigh and I'm Victor!

A couple times she's guessed the big twists but I knew there was NO WAY she'd even accidentally get this one. I dont remember why or when I watched this but I was shook for a couple days trying to figure out how I never once thought they were dead. The thought just never crossed my mind.

I'm hard pressed to remember if this take on a haunted house movie had ever been done before which is why it stuck the landing. The audience went in expecting a haunted house movie and got one from an angle no one had seen before.

Because usually we know immediately if they’re ghosts because the story is centered around that. In this one it’s centered about a mom, her children and the strange staff just trying to get through…life…in a suspected “haunted” house. Brilliant!
@Rzo139 Жыл бұрын
They did a great job at building up to it. You go in knowing something is up to knowing it's a haunted house to knowing something is up with the staff then getting an idea that the staff is probably dead and having it confirmed to where you're like, "Yeah, I got that halfway." And then getting smacked in the face so hard with the final twist that it feels like Jesus slapped you with his sandal. It was very well done.

"The staff all just disappeared." They left after she killed the kids and herself. Also, think of how scared Victor had to be when this ghost girl starts talking to him. Or the family when all the doors lock and the curtains keep closing.

I saw this in the theater when it came out, and when that cabinet swings open at the end with the old woman, I had never heard an audience scream like that before 😂 The silence is the best part; it’s terrifying. I’m Victor! And I approve this reaction video. 😝😎👍

This is one of those movies that I have to rewatch every Halloween. I just love the music and the house and the atmosphere. And of course the twist is a lot of fun. It's just a perfect haunted house movie. The kids were pretty great too. Good acting all around.

I am so very proud of the horror community being so tight lipped on the plot twist of this movie, even after all these years. It’s one of those twists that once you find someone who hasn’t seen it yet, it’s like “I ain’t saying shit, I want to, but you gotta watch it first.” And seeing the realization in their eyes is priceless ✨

Such a great movie! Like everyone said, the plot twist is everything. The atmosphere makes the movie and events all the more dreadful. A movie I have yet to see anyone react to is The Changeling from 1980. Another very atmospheric horror movie that doesn't rely on gore and jump scares to freak you out.

Yeah... when the fam didn't ever go off the grounds AND the new staff hidden the gravestones, I was sure those were the fam's gravestones. Thought the dad was dead too, but thought he was gonna stay. Sad he didn't. He probably went back to haunt the war grounds.

This is one of my fav all time ghost story movies. The twist is really super cool and it makes you think, if ghosts are real, then maybe that’s what it’s like for them when they’re haunting a house.

It's a spiritual (sort of pun intended) kin to The 6th Sense. They were only a couple of years apart in release, but in my memory, TSS came out in the mid 90s and this came out on the mid-00s. Just like Ms. Kidman, I appear to have some issues with the accuracy of my memory.

I enjoy the little moments where the characters come *very* close to remembering/realizing what happened to them, like Anne getting upset and breathing heavy through her nose, and Grace freaking out saying "stop breathing, stop breathing like that!" or Nicholas being so frightened and in denial that he won't even let Anne *mention* the day their mom went mad... But they still hadnt accepted it, so it still shocks all of them when the ball drops

"This was before we knew PTSD was a real thing" No, in WWII we called it Combat Fatigue. In WWI we called it Shellshock. Today, someone farts loudly, "Oh! I've got PTSD!" He's not acting that way because of PTSD.... as you find out.

Editing Ashleigh brought up The 6th Sense and there's something I need to point out: although The 6th Sense did come out before The Others, the script of The Others was written before The 6th Sense had been released. I remember the director of The Others talking about how horrified he was when he watched The 6th Sense because people would assume this film was heavily "influenced" by The 6th Sense. It was just that two people happened to have a similar idea more or less at the same time. Apart from that, something I think you'd be interested to know is that director Alejandro Amenábar not only directed AND wrote the script, but also made the music in the film. I'd recommend that you watch his two previous films, called Thesis and Open Your Eyes (Tesis and Abre los Ojos respectively). They're two great thrillers you may enjoy. I don't know if you'd be willing to watch films in other languages, though,

The reason the curtains were removed is because the "intruders" kept opening them, only for the ghosts to close them again. They got fed up.

I'm Victor! I think I could have listened to you go on for another 10 or 15 minutes at the end there, talking it over and thinking about the scenes. This is one of my favorite Oct movies and one of the best ghost movies. It throws everything into making you just feel unease and then add a few jump scares that didn't feel too hooky that they were perfect. Great reaction to a great film. 🐾
