Filming videos in the bush, I always struggle with battery, and can't afford a new powerbank. Will be coming back to this video in the future !

I really enjoyed the video today! I’m all about power for my radios and I even spot weld my own battery packs. One add, if you are a technician you can practice some of these skills that David is speaking of. Technicians have access to the 10M band from 28.300 to 28.500. So while you study for your general start working some HF on 10M’s. We are in the part of the solar cycle that really get’s 10M bouncing on the Ionosphere. Two weeks ago I spoke to a station in Alaska, from Georgia, and the next operator was in Argentina. Part of being a general is exactly what David is showing you. Practice. Work on setting up filters so you hear voice better. Work on setting up your PC so you don’t cause spurious emissions in FT8. Personally, I don’t feel like I am practicing for the next zombie apocalypse. I am practicing for that Hurricane that drops our infrastructure. I’m practicing for that attack like in Tennessee a few years back that took out telecom. I have the ability to tell friends and family and the friends and family of my neighbors that we are OK.

Neat thing about extra class is that's where lots of the really good hams are and they teach nice skills up there :) I had Advance license, passed extra written, but 20 wpm eluded me at that time, but now...5 wpm is a cinch , passed 5 wpm after 3 weeks of studying, 30 years ago

Always be a student, love that thought and it should be everyone's creed. You are absolutely right about that, we should strive to learn something new everyday. Thank you for sharing and I love what you did with charging your radio. I am trying to set myself up for portable operation on my FT-991A right now and looking at options. Thank you for providing this video, it has helped me with more input for field options. You are also correct in license, I am an extra but I would recommend if you are interested in ham radio, general will work for most needs. Thank you again.

Beautiful setup. Powerpole or Anderson connectors are the only way to go. In a semi-mobile situation it doesn't cost that much to build out a larger system with 100Ah lifepo battery and a suitcase style 200 watt panel. Renogy makes a very good one. I would ditch the PWM controller that comes with the Renogy and go with a MPPT controller like the HQST that can handle up to 40 amps, allowing a lot of input. However, the Renogy panels are heavy and not something you want to load and unload frequently...although it is doable.

PowerFilm, and especially Bioenno, are excellent options for this setup. Well done. That Buddipole PowerMini is great too. We've been looking at putting a Wall Tent at my hunting camp, which one are you using?

I love the way you started this video, Dave. Yes , there's something to learn every day. If we humble ourselves and have that attitude of.... No... I don't know everything, but I'm willing to learn. And thats just it. No matter how small , no matter how basic something may be. And when you come across someone that is willing to share , show, and explain something to you , from the heart. It's priceless. I want to thank you for you sharing your knowledge, your experience, your wisdom, and all that you do. I have learned much and shared much. And I will always keep that mindset of staying humble. Thanks Don.

The buddipole powermini 2 and the bioenno battery is the way to go. My portable radios are 100w on transmit and pull up to 22 amps, and some of bioennos will handle up to 20-30amp discharge. Plus you can keep your batteries inside out of the elements while the solar panel can stay in the sun. Gigaparts carries a good folding panel called explorer that folds into the size of a sheet of paper and will fit in a backpack. I think its a 150 watt panel which is about then max power the powermini can handle.

Try a piece of mylar to reflect more sun onto your panel, increase the input that way, but try it yourself and see if it's effective for. I was a ham radio operator a while back Used to enjoy field day

As of the day this posted Amazon has the Tough Light for $63.95 and the StreamLight super siege 1100 lumen is $119.95. Since the increase in price for the Tough Light, I feel that the Stream Light super siege is the better buy.

Good setup, David! I have two lights very similar to the ones you demonstrated, "Energizer" brand. Didn't come with a shield, so as a true DIYer, I put a patch of duct tape on the back to keep it from blinding me when I need some "up close" illumination. I also discovered, that while they *CAN* be used as a battery bank for charging other devices, the light needs to be *ON* in order to perform this function. Other brands may differ. Sure is nice to have light whenever and wherever you need it! The wife just swiped mine to use in the bathroom while she redoes some caulking!! ROFL. Take care, thanks, and 73!!

I want to bring up a question on jscall and similar programs for shtf coms during grid down. I see a major Achilles heel here and no one seems to have addressed it. For js8 and wsjtx to work properly they all have to be perfectly in sync on time. What happens during grid down where there is no internet and u can’t sync the time. I’ve noticed my laptop after about a week will be off by a few seconds and that stops js8 call from working properly. Do you have a solution for this problem ? My thought maybe something like Starlink or sat phone that can hook up to pc to sync time but that’s expensive and also assuming it’s operational .
