I bought this tripod this week. It is superb. I wanted a carbon fibre, light weight tripod, a good working height without extending the centre column all of the time. It had to be strong and rigid, and easily carried. The ST 124 ticked all the boxes. My D610 + 16-35mm is a heavy combination, this tripod easily supported it. Never moved a millimetre. It feels absolute quality, without breaking the bank.

So many nice features and yet it seems that locking the legs requires three twists for each of the 9 locks.. I don't understand why so many tripods seem to be abandoning flip lever locks.
@jimmystewartuk2 жыл бұрын
Apparently it is due to water proof sealing. The twist lock design enables the inside of the tripod to be further waterproof, therefore stopping dirt or sand getting inside, which in long term would effect the smoothness to the tripod legs operation.
@granitfog2 жыл бұрын
@@jimmystewartuk Thank you for a reply. I guess the answer to that would be to make a twist that is only 30 degrees or so, instead of the 180 degrees or more it seems to be from the videos I've seen

I am trying to decide between the ST-124 and the ST-125. I don’t think i need the extra height of the 124 because i am only 5’6”. Given that the 125 is shorter for storing and transportation, are there any reasons i should pick the 124 instead?
@jimmystewartuk2 жыл бұрын
Great question Matthew, the ST-125 in my opinion is made for lighter setups, due to the internal legs having more sections to shorten the size, the last section is quite thin. So if you’re likely to have bigger setups on top, I would recommend getting the ST-124. It would be more steadier this way. If traveling with as small as possible equipment is needed, than the ST-125 would be your choice.
@matthewbeizer72412 жыл бұрын
@@jimmystewartuk That is a great answer. Thank you. My rig is pretty small, a Sony A7iv, either a prime or a zoom like the Sigma 24-70 F2.8, and maybe a Godox flash. Sounds like the ST-125 would work.

Thanks Stephanie for the feedback. The Sirui ST-124 is still a great on the go tripod in 2024, especially if your setup is more larger and heavier. How is it better then the Peak Design Aluminium Travel Tripod? It costs the same...
@jimmystewartuk3 жыл бұрын
More versatile & steady in my opinion. It is also carbon fibre. The ST-124 could change to any tripod head that suits the scene, while the peak design works only with what it comes with and really only works for photos/stills. It doesn’t hold up as well in windy conditions comparing to the ST-124. Furthermore, the ST-124 is fully waterproof and the tripod head that comes with it, is capable in getting panning and tilting video shots. Peak Design has got a carbon fibre option as well, but last time I check it costs more. Hope this helps

I don't know if I should get this tripod, or the peak design one? Also, is this taller than the peak?
@jimmystewartuk2 жыл бұрын
Hi George, great question. The peak design is shorter in comparison. And to help you decide which tripod to get, think of the peak as a fixed design, vs Sirui ST-124 as modular. The tripod head on the Sirui could easily be changed to any kind in the future, whereas the Peak is more or less use it as it is or not at all. Peak’s fixed choice is what allowed it to be slightly smaller in footprint. But honestly, for versatility I would go with the ST-124 any day. Let me know if you have any other questions.
@georgebrown84932 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering that question Jimmy. No, that’s perfect I’m going with the Sirui I think for the money it’s the better purchase not to suggest the peak is a poor purchase but I do agree.

Nice review! Can I ask, would you recommend the ball head over the fluid head for this tripod? I want to do both long exposure shots and video with my dslr if possible, without needing to switch between tripod heads. This would be my first tripod so I am a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there.
@jimmystewartuk3 жыл бұрын
Hello there 👋🏼 thanks for reaching out. If you’re primarily shooting video, and in horizontal format (16:9), I would suggest getting the fluid head. Because although this ball head by Sirui does allow video too, a dedicated fluid head would still make it easier to get great pan or tilt shots in comparison. Here is the link to this tripod with the fluid head: store.sirui.com/products/sirui-standard-series-carbon-fiber-tripod-kit?_pos=2&_sid=520fea09e&_ss=r&variant=39725626228885 Seems like Sirui is doing a deal now with the fluid head combo being cheaper. @jimmystewartuk3 жыл бұрын
@@Pharesm the level adjustment under the tripod head indeed is handy, but it does make the tripod bulkier with that design. At the moment, before new innovations comes to market, having the ball head level adjustment built into the tripod head makes it most compact out of all designs. This is a tripod made for taking around easily after all 😄
@Pharesm3 жыл бұрын
@@jimmystewartuk Yeah, its smaller on a lot of brands. But for example Leofoto tripods with bowl are pretty much identical. I will anyway put a small fluid head on it. I don't bother with ball heads, they annoy me. Also, non-bowl tripods usually have a center post, and the diameter is hardly any smaller. I know, there's some rather bulky bowl designs, - especially for heavy cameras! But if you compare the difference with some tripod brands, like Leofoto, Sirui, its literally the same. Check out the 223CEX or 225CEX. You can have your cake and eat it too :D
@jimmystewartuk3 жыл бұрын
@@Pharesm Just had a look at Leofoto's tripod, very small indeed! Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I agree with you if you're using a fluid head only, then a bowl mount makes better sense for levelling. No monopod option in this though, rest everything is awesome
@jimmystewartuk2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Just in case you’re referring to a tripod being able to convert to a monopod, than the ST-124 wouldn’t be a tripod for that anyways. The tripod is meant to be a unibody in order ensure no moisture and dust can get inside. If parts can be unscrewed to become a monopod then this resistance would be avoided.
@adamkrauss3032 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Stewart / Filmmaker - My understanding is the Sirui W-1204 is carbon fiber, has waterproof legs AND converts to monopod.
@jimmystewartuk2 жыл бұрын
@@adamkrauss303 Interesting! I don’t see this available in the UK, only in the US so I didn’t know. Looks like the monopod unscrews from the top which makes water entering very difficult, so thats great. Although the whole design is still transitional though comparing to the tri-design Sirui is moving forward with, which saves up a lot of space. @@jimmystewartuk thankyou for the review. I appreciate the information. I've faced problems with many screw-on tripod legs while working for TV and doco's. Due to travel wear and tear...screw-on tripod legs barely last 3years. The Best travel tripod will have to be something that weighs less than 5kgs , fluid-head and flip locks...I'm still looking out for one with these requirements. 👍🏾
@jimmystewartuk3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your time to reply. Those are good points you listed. It is indeed hard to come by a travel tripod with a fluid-head that still keeps the form factor small. I’ve gotten so use to adjusting the level on ball-heads though that it doesn’t bother too much anymore. Also the extra benefits to these new screw-on tripods from Sirui is the waterproof design, which from my research protects a lot more from dust entering the inside, causing problems and having to then take more time and maintain the tripod in good condition.
