Quite a few releases so far this year I ought to check out at some point! Admittedly as someone mostly focused on the boundary between prog rock and prog metal in terms of modern releases (so mostly metal but not super heavy metal), my favorite prog albums so far in 2024 have been Charcoal Grace by Caligula's Horse and Karma by Myrath. As for what I know is coming out that I'm looking forward to, the main ones that come to mind are the upcoming Nightwish and Leprous albums, and maybe we'll hear if the new Dream Theater album that they've supposedly finished tracking will be out by the end of the year or not. But I'll be sure to give some of these a listen at some point too! You were really selling me on Sykofant and IZZ in particular, and of course I need to get into Big Big Train and Kaipa soon!

I've just watched your video and frankly, I am humbled. Every time you moved to another group and described their work, it made me realise how limited are our own abilities technically, especially my own. I strongly suspect if you put a couple of our 'best tracks' against pieces chosen at random from any of the 25 groups listed, we would sound silly or at least grotesquely amateur by comparison. Over the past 2 decades we've tended to play concerts where we supported or were supported by power pop groups, avant garde outfits or even punk bands, so it was not too difficult for us to sound impressive and make an impact. However, rubbing shoulders with 21st century progressive rock groups places our feeble efforts into stark perspective. I've now listened to tracks by Tangent, Myth Of Logic, The Flower Kings and Neal Morse. My initial reaction was: ye gods, who are we kidding? I still intend to continue with the progressive rock direction our group currently follows but - at least for a while - I'll have to stop listening to other prog rock groups. It's too intimidating. I shall continue to watch each of your videos, of course!

Well, bearing in mind I've never even heard of three quarters of these outfits, I'm not qualified to comment...but I will anyway coz that's the kind of wild, windswept and interesting chap I am. Neal Morse 'Joseph, The Restoration' ought to be in the top ten...perhaps even the top five. Also, in the bottom five or six I'd insert Am Yisroel Chai by UNIT, if only because of 2 tracks - At The Academy and Am Yisroel Chai, all 18 minutes of it. Now I'll have to check out some of these other groups. I hope you realise how much money it costs me every time I watch one of your 'best new prog' type videos. Still, that's how I discovered Tangent and Myth Of Logic so I'm not complaining.

Great List! I've listened to most of these, but not quite all yet, some really great stuff here. I was a bit surprised that Barock Project wasn't higher on the list, as I thought that would really resonate with you. It's near the top of my list, as is Big Big Train. But my new favorite album of the year (so far) is not prog at all. It is the brand new album from Guster - Ooh La La, a fantastic album of beautiful songs, melodies, and arrangements, a low-key masterpiece that is a real grower. Anyway, here is my list of top 20 faves so far this year: 20. Dirt Poor Robins - Firebird 19. Karfagen - Messages From Afar-2nd Nature 18. Sykofant - s/t 17. Returned to the Earth - Stalagmite Steeple 16. Sleepmakeswaves - It's Here, But I Have No names For It 15. the Decemberists - As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again 14. Emerald City Council - Motion Carries 13. Azure - Fym 12. Kyros - Mannequin 11. IZZ - Collapse the Wave 10. Airbag - The Century of the Self 9. Steve Hackett - The Circus and the Nightwhale 8. The Pineapple Thief - It Leads To This 7. Mandoki Soulmates - The Memory of Our Future 6. Rick Miller - One of the Many 5. Bend Sinister - Mostly Great Things 4. Albion - Lakesongs of the Elbid 3. Big Big Train - The Likes of Us 2. Barock Project - Time Voyager 1. Guster - Ooh La La (Not Prog at all, but my new fave, fantastic songs, vocals, and arrangements. Low-key, but wonderful songs that build into joyous evocative treats).

So many albums so little time. 2024 is a bit of a write off for me at the moment. A lot of stuff has been happening in my personal life as you know. So I’m afraid I have been mostly Living in the Past. Also I’m still playing catch up with 2023. I bought so many albums in 2023 that I haven’t absorbed yet. Which is not to say that there’s nothing new for me in 2024 it’s just been a little more subdued. Here’s some of the stuff I’ve been listening to for the first half of 2024: Elbow - Audio Vertigo Ellesmere - Stranger Skies Four Tet - Three Judas Priest - Invincible Shield Robot God - Portal Within A Secret River - Mirror Universe The Smile - Wall of Eyes Future Islands - People Who Aren’t There Anymore That’s about it for now. Admittedly I have been listening to older stuff. The stuff I find comforting.
