Wow! Love #14! Peter Hammil never plays a 16th note but so many of his great songs feature dark, discordant piano lines a la King Crimson. VDGG would not be what they were without Mr. Banton. Listen to any of the live performances of Man-Erg and you will see his genius on display.

Would disagree on a few. I personally put Wakeman over Emerson, but that's personal taste. Downes isn't even in the top 40, IMO. Vangelis, Tony Kaye, Roger Hodgson, Alan Parsons, Mike Oldfield, Thomas Bodin, Ryo Okumoto, Thijs van Leer, Rod Argent, Eddie Jobson, Steve Walsh, Jan Hammer, Chick Corea, IMO, all would rate higher than basically all of your choices for 9-15. Just my opinion, though. Note, not including people who played keys as well as other instruments who were incredibly good, such as Trevor Rabin, John Paul Jones, Kerry Livgren.

I think Jon Lord should be #3 behind only Wakeman and Emerson. He had mad skills above Tony Banks who had to work really hard to produce several repeatable lines in some great Genesis songs. If I could only listen to one prog song forever it would be Cinema Show and yet it is clear he could never improvise a Roundabout solo or even Oye Como Va. Kentucky Woman shows what The Lord could do! BTW Rick Wakeman just missed his calling as a stand-up comedian. I always thought he was a stuffed shirt but if you can find his podcast with Keith you will laugh your ass off. Mr. Emerson gives him a run for his money. Whoever knew such intellectauls could be so hilarious?!?!

Hey there! Thanks for your comment! About Tony, best not underestimate him… he’s a melodic genius, he is indeed one of the best keyboardists out there and can rip wicked solos quite nicely. Listen to “Down and Out” from Genesis! Love the bits about RW. That dude is absolutely hilarious I know!
