+Daniel Argueta Dolphins, whales, turtles, and many other marine species, as well as terrestrial animals such as cows, dogs, sheep, tortoises, birds and other animals have all been hurt or killed by balloons. The animal is usually killed from the balloon blocking its digestive tract, leaving them unable to take in any more nutrients. It slowly starves to death. The animals can also become entangled in the balloon and its ribbon making the animal unable to move or eat. Sea turtles are particularly at risk because they naturally prey on jellies, which balloons can easily be mistaken for, even with human eyes. Balloons can take years to break down, even the so-called “biodegradable” latex ones. This gives plenty of time for it to travel and encounter many animals that may mistake it for a tasty snack, or accidentally get entangled in it.

While I wish you all the best for your future, and your relationship there are some issues that need to be raised here. Without meaning any harm we, as humans, often take actions that are harming our own futures. Helium is a precious non-renewable resource required for many applications, such as cooling complex medical equipment - as medical staff I expect you would know of this. When we release balloons, we release that gas into our atmosphere and it is gone forever. One day it will run out, and our future generations will have none. We cannot mine it from the stars, which is the only other place it is found. Secondly, it breaks my heart to see all of those balloons and their strings drift off into the sky when I know they will return to our seas, and waterways to damage fish, turtles, and birds, and our ecosystem. While romantic gestures are beautiful, they can also be very selfish and near sighted - no offence. Releasing one balloon is cute, releasing 700 is quite a harmful course of action. I hope your marriage is long and happy and leaves you more fulfilled than those sweet souls from UP. Remember as a new family, you have a duty to care for this planet for your own children, and theirs. Your children would benefit from helium still being available terrestrially, and more wildlife alive in our seas.
