I'd like to recommend Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which I finished recently and was completely floored. The devs took a big risk in changing up from the action formula of the past Yakuza games, but the turn based rpg nature of LAD worked beautifully with the kind of story they were trying to tell.

@@nathangarcia3953 Trails series has a great world building, Cold Steel story was ok, but my god, they really need to drop the power of friendship deus ex machina and "do you have the resolve?" sht over and over again. Rean in CS1: Bohoo, I'm so weak. Later: I have the resolve. Rean in CS2: Bohoo, I'm so weak. Later: I have the resolve. And so on until CS4. God, it became so repetitive. There are games that before subbing to your channel I wouldn't have even considered(or even casually made fun of), but after years of listening to you talk about these worlds, it's impossible to not feel that same passion. Without your introduction, I literally would never have touched a Dragon Quest game. Now, it's one of my most anticipated world to become more familiar with. You're so wonderful at riding a perfect balance between new things(i.e robb and your thoughts on Metroid Dread), but also dipping into unknown pockets. Without your updates, there's a portion of the gaming world that would never have been opened up to me. Always so grateful for the perspectives you have. They're different and valued for that reason. Sublime. Thank you for always being authentic.

Nice video Johnny. PS4 had amazing JRPGs and I'm glad that I was able to experience a couple of them. One of my favorite genres to play. I was surprised that you didn't mention the .Hack remastered collection. Those were great. Couple of those PS2 jrpgs remastered with updates. My favorite JRPGs so far have been Nier Automata and Ni No Kuni 2. Nier Automata I finally got to play it since it came out in 2017 and I played the demo before buying the game on a sale the following year when it was cheaper. In April I got to play this and I had so much fun with the game, doing sidequests with 2B and collecting a ton of items, the chip system etc. I'm trophy hunting as well and I left off halfway through the game. Still finishing up the game because I was enjoying it so much. Ni No kuni 2 as well because I played Level 5's Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy PS2 JRPGS on PS4 digital and only finished Chp 1 of Ni No Kuni 2 but I had a lot of fun with it so far. Look forward to the side quests and doing everything in the game. FF7 I recently got on Black Friday 2020 as well and waiting for Part 2 to come out before I begin playing the actual game.

It's been mentioned a few times already in the comments, but everything in the Yakuza universe is PAINFULLY well-executed. All of the main games are playable on the PS4 (0, Kiwami 1& 2, remasters of 3 4 5, then 6, and then Like a Dragon) in addition to the two OTHER games from the same studio that follow a similar formula/universe (Judgment and Lost Judgment) which immediately puts it on the 'Best Of' list of games for me. I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me shout its praises from the mountaintops, and it helps that the price point is very reasonable.

The Trails series is phenomenal, and absolutely worth going back to the original Trails in the Sky trilogy and giving them a playthrough. My personal favorite story arc thus far, however, is the Crossbell arc (Trails from Zero/Trails to Azure), the middle two entries that sort of bridge some gaps between Sky and Cold Steel. I just played through this one again and I think it's undoubtedly the most endearing story of any JRPG I've played. It's in my top 5 JRPGs of the last decade. However, it's a far cry from a masterpiece for me and I really wish they would have made some quality of life changes in the remaster instead of just slapping a fresh coat of paint on it. 1. Leveling in this game is a pain. Resetting familiars back to LVL1 after metamorphosis is a bad mechanic. Halving the level would have been better. Any meaningful leveling you can do is limited to defeating Toko and its evolutions. Regular encounters simply don't give enough EXP towards the latter half of the game. 2. Some of the Alchemy recipes are impossible to create unless you spend hundreds of hours grinding for the materials which you can only get off of gold enemies (like shiny Pokemon) which have a ludicrously low encounter rate. 3. The whole game should have been voice acted for all story related content. Of the dozen or so scenes that were voice acted, only 60% or so of them were meaningful to the story. A 10 second voice acted scene of someone saying someone's name then make some noise like "uuuhhhhhhhh aahhhhhhhhhh!!!!" is pointless when there are much more involved scenes you have to read through. 4. Dinoceros and Griffen should have been rebalanced in the remaster. 5. The world map should have been better. You should have been allowed to zoom in on another area even if you weren't there. 6. Attacks in combat that disrupt the entire flow to show some cutscene were a bad decision. 7. Swaine tales FOREVER to execute a trick shot. 8. Esther's battle AI should have been better balanced to burn less MP and balance MP burn with physical attacks when 2 of her favoured genuses are more physical combat focused. 9. The game should have been broken up into 2 games since 90% of the game is chasing down Shadar and defeating him feels like the end of the game but NOPE here comes the White witch that Oliver had no clue even existed until she unleashed Manna right at the end of the game and introduced herself. White witch should have been in a second game or removed from the plot entirely. Anyway, that's enough because I could list more problems with this game but I'd be sitting here on the toilet all day. Point is, I accept that others can feel this game is a "masterpiece", but for me, it's not. But it is a top 5. It has a lot of flaws but is still really good overall.

I recently been going back and rebuying a lot of the Xbox 360 exclusive jrpgs that are backwards compatible. When I got my ps5 I bought ff7 remake intergrade, p5 royal, Tokyo Xanadu ex+, sakura wars, .hack//sign GU recode, Tales of beseria, Tales of zestria, ys memories of celceta, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2. I appreciate this list, shows me some others I need to grab

The ps4 was an rpg (especially jrpgs) renaissance for me. Growing up with nes and snes rpgs and then kind of stopped with the ps1. Fast forward many years, then I played DQ11 and all of a sudden the fire was rekindled. I then played persona 5, tales of vesteria, ys 8, odinsphere and then some. One you left off that I really enjoyed is Yakuza like a dragon, it is the Yakuza homage to dragon quest.

Needless to say, the Playstation 4 is THE system for JPRG games. Many of which are in 1080p at 60 fps. Even in a turn-based RPG (Dragon Quest 11 definitive edition for example), games running at 60 fps (at least) look and play excellent. I am very excited for future JRPG games for my Playstation 5.

And, not unimportant, the PS4 is a cheap console to collect for currently! Yes, there are individual expensive titles, but still a large library of excellent JRPGs for $20, $15, even $10 a piece.

@@axogreen876 Yeah lately PC has gotten tons more support from japanese devs, and sometimes it's the only platform with uncensored titles. There's still some broken ports but overall the amount and quality of releases now is much higher than before. And if you count emulation, a PC has pretty much every JRPG you can think of heh

Transformers Devestation. I mention it because I don't think most people will think of it as an RPG, but it is. You gain levels, increase your stats, get new weapons. It's an RPG! The RPG elements are fairly light, but there's enough there that I think it qualifies. And it's such a good game. Platinum combat at peak awesome and a pitch perfect reimagining of the old '80s Transformers cartoon. The only problem is that it's too short. I really wish it had a sequel with more characters (both Autobot and Decepticon). Other great games you didn't mention: 13 Sentinels Blue Reflection Disgaea 5 (and Disgaea 1, too) Final Fantasy X/X-2 remaster Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne Valkyria Chronicles 4

Half of these games I’ve never heard of, thanks! From the PS4 rpg’s I’ve played so far, I’d add these. Horizon Zero Dawn (not sure if it’s an RPG, but my favourite gameplay so far!), Dragon’s Dogma (kinda ps3 but so what, unbelievably fun), annnnd.... maybe Dragon Age Inquisition? Which wasn’t amazing but had solid gameplay that kept me going for 100 hrs easy.

Just got it a few days ago so Salt and Sanctuary on the PS4. This is definitely in my opinion a Metroidvania Action RPG Sidescroller inspired by Dark Souls, the lore is there, the gameplay can be tough and even grueling and most of the time you have no idea where you are going or what you'll be fighting next. I know rogue likes are getting a bad rap recently as all being Souls clones or uninspiring, but Salt and Sanctuary is a beautiful little game developed by Ska Studios and it is a lot of fun to just get into it.

When I played Nier Automata first, the story was off at first but got more into it and started to really liked it and having gone through 2B, 9S, and A2 stories my god it was something and went into playing Nier on my PS3 before I knew the remaster was coming to PS4 and playing the first one was more deepening especiallly facing the Shadowlord and hearing Kaine's harsh talks from time to time to the all "mighty" Grimoire Weiss, even to Emile of all the characters who's Taro's iconic person in the series. Even I need to play the Replicant version just to rediscover the story again.

Diablo III is the game I've pumped the most hours into outside MMOs, which is testament to how addictive it is and how at home it feels using a controller (so much so that I prefer it on console to PC). The Neptunia and Atelier series are worth a look at too. Nothing ground breaking in them, and they're on the easier side, but Neptunia games work for the characterisations for anyone who is into anime. The Atelier series work based on the crafting systems that they're constantly refining that play an integral part to progression, yet you don't have to master to beat the game (just be good enough at for side content like super bosses).

I really want to buy the tales of arise games and play them. I recently got into rpgs with the witcher 3 and d&d ect. And i found a channel on youtube called food4dogs and she talks highly about this game. So i was curious so i typed it into yt to see a trailor and omg i want this game so so much. But my funds are limited right now. I saved up for god of war ragnarok and I'm waiting for it to go down in price cuz 80 to 300 dollars for a game is just wow! I mean i know it's god of war but come on lol I'm a game collecter and a huge gamer so i like suggestions on games I've never heard of like tales of arise. Gaming is what keeps me going that and music. I wanted to play skyrim but i was told you need to have the internet for that so that bummed me out. I love horror games they are my fav do they have horror rpgs?I'm asking because i literally don't know if that's a thing. I would love suggestions on games like this for ps3 ps4 or ps2 and since i barely leave my apt during the winter months gaming is going to be all i do well that and sleep. Yes i have a very boring life but i love it if I'm being honest.anyways thank you for your time. And suggestions are much appreciated. Was also wanting to try dragon age and bridge of kenya are they any good?love devil may cry series but my copies were stolen and i havent had the chance to replace them yet.I'd love to try the final fantasy games but the newer ones for ps4 and such i was told you have to have online to play those as well. So that dissapointed me. My internet connection isnt the best i mean it works but not very well. So i usually just play offline wich i prefer anyways.
