It's such a wonderful moment when you start a book and you almost immediately feel that it's going to work for you. It doesn't happen enough, but I'm so happy when it does. 🐖

May was such a fun month of reading. Your description of Demon Copperhead is really tempting, even though I rarely consider picking up literary fiction and generally avoid those sadder tales

I DNF'd Womb City right at the part you mentioned. I just couldn't after that. Not to mention she used the word privilege a million times. I truly enjoyed Fledgling but then again I like vampire stories. People forget that Octavia likes to get a reaction from folks to spark a conversation.

I’m relieved to know that I didn’t miss out on DNFing Womb City. I wanted to like it too

May was amazing for me as well. I found a new favorite, "A Master of Djinn" by P. Djèlí Clark and I found the best debut of 2024 so far, "Kavithri" by Aman J. Bedi. I also re-read "Black Sun", one of my favorite books of all times and "Fevered Star" in preparation for the conclusion, "Mirrored Heavens" by Rebecca Roanhorse. So excited for more Octavia E. Butler content from you. 🥰

Just for the Summer is one of my favourite romances ever, soooo powerful!! And oooh consider me sold on Demon Copperhead, I was nervous to check that out, but your gushing has me confident I will enjoy it :))) My favourite book of May was Hell For Hire by Rachel Aaron. It's got a motley crew of loveable demons, a chaotic male forest witch with a sassy talking cat familiar, snarky sentient weapons, wicked warlocks, and plenty of magical mayhem. Hope you give it a look 💕

I finished Womb City last night. Like Rachel, I gave it a 5/5. IMO it was beautifully written, good plot, great world building, action packed with tons of plot twists. I made notes of the rules- # of body hops, lifespans, etc. I may not have agreed with the characters decision but it’s not a butterflies and fairy tales story.

I recently read The Fifth Season and loved it. I flew through Dawn by Octavia E. Butler. It had intentionally uncomfortable moments and I am interested to keep going in the series. Now I am reading The Three Body Problem.

I agree about Living Resistance. I loved what it had to say, but it was very beginner, surface-level, and I want more actionable steps.

Just finished The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood (absolutely wild!) as well as Lightfall #3, and a bit more of Discworld.

🐄🐖🐑 I've just read the part in Mask of Mirrors where I went - Oh, no. Don't you dare hurt Tess! 😧 I'll probably finish it in the next few days and I have the second book on hand to immediately hop in once I'm done with Mask of Mirrors (I have been reading it really slowly because I want to savor it 🥰) I have also been eyeing Demon Copperhead in the library for the last few months, so I was very intrigued to hear your thoughts on it 😊

Oh, how disappointing about Womb City! Her work can be too graphic for me, but it's always been really interesting in the past, and that just sounds like such a let down. Glad you had so many other strong reads to balance it out.

Yea Womb City was just not nearly as interesting to me as her other works unfortunately.

Fledgling is amazing! My favorite Butler for sure. I think people are just (comprehensibly) very sensitive to the pedophilia adjacent aspect, but the short story Bloodchild for example was harder for me in this aspect. Hope you enjoy it!

I am about 30% in and finding it fairly standard uncomfortable power dynamics. Like I think I would be just as uncomfortable if she was 20-30 with how little true consent seems to exist here lol

@@LiteratureScienceAlliance Maybe spoilers? I think the vibes are a bit obvious, but maybe read later. Yep! I think it's harder to deal when you imagine things bc imagining a "8 yo" in these situations is tough. But if I remember correctly you don't create pictures while you read right? So one less problem lol. When we discover the extent of her powers it got much more uncomfortable for me, which I quite enjoyed bc it totally inverts our expectations.
