Miscanthus is a herbaceous perennial, belongs to the bluegrass family, like the well-known sugarcane, or like bluegrass in the lawn. He has about forty relatives. Miscanthus are very often used in landscape design. One of the most popular plants for urban landscaping, as they are quite unpretentious plants with a decorative appearance, almost all year round.
Miscanthus giant - One of the largest plants of its family, American bulrush, elephant grass - these are all its names. It has a unique type of photosynthesis, which allows it to grow at a tremendous rate. Latin name: Miscanthus giganteus In countries with a colder climate, it fails to bloom. Panicle when blooming has a pink color after it acquires a silvery color. The bush holds an upright shape very well. The leaves have a pleasant green color in dark tones. The leaves are quite long, up to a meter long, the leaf width is about 2-4 cm. In Ukraine, I have seen samples reaching 4m in height, naturally miscanthus reaches this size with watering and decent feeding. Most often, they are decorated with places near the water near lakes, they can be planted in solitary plantings on the lawn, or
emphasize the structure, the height of the miscanthus allows it to be commensurate with the size.
Planting and top dressing:
It is better to plant miscanthus in the spring. In the conditions of Ukraine, the second half of March is great for this. Elephantgrass loves the sun and warm weather, so an open, sunny spot is the best place to land. It is also necessary to take into account his dislike for drafts. For normal development, water plays a huge role and a large amount of it will help it grow well. You can plant it by dividing the bush, since it gives a lot of root suckers. He loves fertile soil, which will provide excellent growth.
How to care for miscanthus:
Water as much as possible - this plant is not afraid of a large amount of water, just like most bluegrass, you can safely water it from above without fear of drops on the leaves.
The plant responds well to fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers. In some cases, a catastrophic lack of nitrogen in the soil can lead to the death of miscanthus. In the second half
in summer, the soil must be fertilized with potassium and phosphorus for better wintering. Due to the powerful fibrous root system of miscanthus, it is difficult for weeds to compete with it. Due to the fact that the roots of the plant grow at a tremendous speed and this plant grows so actively that it must be stopped, otherwise it will get out of control. Based on the rate of growth of miscanthus, it is also necessary to choose a place for planting with natural or artificial growth limiters with a depth of at least 20 cm.
Reproduction:
Miscanthus is propagated by dividing the bush, the seeds in our conditions do not have time to form. Also, if miscanthus is sown with seeds, then the decorative properties are not preserved, so it is better to choose the vegetative propagation path of the plant. Due to its growth rate, it is practically not affected by diseases and pests, and the decorative effect of the bush is always on top. Elephant grass is not often found in parks and private gardens, although it is highly decorative and incredibly easy to care for, easy to propagate. Miscanthus does not like cold weather, it is desirable to cover it for the winter. Shelter that can be organized from its foliage and stems. Please yourself and those around you by planting such a miracle.
