I am going to be hoisting my RTT right off of my CBI Bed Rack since I back into my garage. I feel your pain with locating studs. I just needed a system like this to hoist the CVT tent. Thank you for all the trial and error parts. Its awesome.

All in all good job! The kit is actually good. In my opinion what you should be doing is only lifting it a few feet. If your vehicle fits into the garage with the tent on top. Just lift it off of the truck rack. Also the 5/8” sheet rock is code for Fire Rating. 2 5/8” sheets of sheet rock is a 1 hour Fire rating.

Great video!!! I think your roof joists are 24" on center, not 16". That might have been another reason you couldnt find them. Keep posting great vids man!!

I used a unistrut for the base and that worked great. 4+ years and no issues with the setup. Very solid. I also used a 2x6 to span the ceiling joists for extra reinforcement.

A helpful trick for finding studs: use a strong magnet to locate the drywall screws. The screws should always be along the studs
@AdventureBuilt4 жыл бұрын
Wow that is a great trick. I’ll tuck that away for the next time. Appreciate it.

And if you don't have a magnet handy, there are cell phone apps that use the magnet in your phone to find the screws or nails.

I put pool noodles over the wire and nuts of the lift to avoid damaging my RTT. Using mine for 5 years flawlessly!! What kind of attachment points are you using for your RTT onto your crossbars? Seen clearly here at 15:39
@AdventureBuilt5 ай бұрын
They were actually the crossbars that came with the kit. They fit perfectly around the tent.

how big is the gap from the ceiling to the top of the tent when pulled all the way up? need to know so I can add that plus the height of my tent and rack to know how much it will hang in my garage for clearance. thanks!
@AdventureBuilt4 жыл бұрын
I put my tent all the way to the ceiling so that it is touching the ceiling. I wanted as much clearance as well.
@solomtbrider57734 жыл бұрын
@@AdventureBuilt its able to touch the ceiling with no gap even with the bar that rolls the cable down the middle? interesting, I would have figured it would stop at least 6 inches from the top of tent to ceiling. thanks for your reply
@AdventureBuilt4 жыл бұрын
Solo MTB Rider if you send me your email I can send you a picture. Basically the perimeter of the tent along the hoist bars touches the tent and the ladder sits up against the bar. The bar sits 3/4” off the ceiling and it’s probably just fabric touching the ceiling. So in all honesty it probably sits 3/4-1” off the ceiling depending how you mount the hoist. If you mount it flush the the ceiling it you will have less of a gap. The lowest part hanging down are the clamps on the bottom of the tent. It’s kind of a pain to get it up and down. Unfortunately I go on trips almost every month so I end up leaving it on my truck. To lazy to pull it off and put it on all the time since it’s a 3 person job for me. I hope this helps.
@@AdventureBuilt any chance I could get that picture too? Looking at this for a friend’s Volvo/RTT combo for when she’s not using the tent. Cool video! Was looking for a shot of the tent all the way up. Also, as others I think mentioned: ceiling joists are generally 24” on center, and garage door track mounts are always into studs, so that’s a good starting point. This info is all after the fact, but there it is. lol miketv73@gmail.com if a pic is available.

Were you able to extend the cables properly to allow you to go all the way to the floor? I’m considering a similar product but the lift height is roughly 8’ and my ceiling is 11’ so I’d need to do the same thing that you talked about at the end of your video. I’m curious as to whether the additional height causes lift or stress issues with the system. Thanks for your help!
@AdventureBuilt10 ай бұрын
I never actually adjusted the cables. I ended up building a rolling work bench. I would remove the tent off the truck in the driveway and place it on the workbench, roll it into the garage then hoist it from the elevated position. Worked great.
@pinger5303 жыл бұрын
Another way to attach the hoist to the tent is to use the supplied rack and then attach nylon webbing with clips to the bottom corners of the rack. That way you are suspending the tent underneath the rack and that allows you to have enough webbing to reach the ground. Therefore you wouldn’t need to get more cable. Just an idea.
@AdventureBuilt3 жыл бұрын
That is actually a great idea. Thank you.

How can this function with the garage door in the open position? It doesn't look back far enough to be able back in, shut the door and lower the RTT on your vehicle.
@AdventureBuilt Жыл бұрын
Yea unfortunately my garage door isn’t tall enough to back the truck in. If I had a shorter bed rack I would be able to. I used to remove the tent and lower it onto a wood workbench on wheels, then wheel it over to the hoist and then pull it up.

Those are joists, by the way. My favorite method for locating studs or joists is to use a flashlight across the surface to locate nail pops or screw depressions

I want to do this for a RTT in my carport. It has a vaulted (angled) roof and no level ceiling. I'll be mounting directly to the ceiling joists with one side higher than the other if that makes sense. So I figure I have to instal different length cables in order to keep the tent level. Anyone have experience with this?
@AdventureBuilt4 жыл бұрын
I honestly don’t think that is the best way to mount the bracket. It may be a batter idea to build a platform off the ceiling joists and mount the frame level to that. Might be a bit more secure having all the arms evenly distributed the weight. The beat of luck.

@AdventureBuilt3 жыл бұрын
It holds it just fine. Granted my tent isn’t in it very much. Maybe a couple weeks a month. Goes up and down every time with no issues.
You will only be lowering it and raising it to and from a vehicle going forward though right? Shouldn’t need longer cables. Also with that much weight a corded drill would work best. This system should work good for you👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@AdventureBuilt4 жыл бұрын
jon shearer unfortunately I cannot back my truck into the garage since I have it mounted on a camper shell and not a bed rack. I have been lowering it onto a sturdy workbench on wheels and moving it out of my garage to put it on my truck. Works pretty well. My next garage will hopefully have a taller door to make it easier to install and remove. And I agree about the corded drill. Thank you.

Is your tent bracket on a quick release clamps?
@AdventureBuilt4 жыл бұрын
Yes the tent is on a quick release clamp which is stock on Yakima tents. It is how it clamps to the cross bars. For the hoist I just set the tent on bars.
