It is such a hard choice. I looked at the Garmin IR Mini 2 and Messenger along with the Zoleo. I went with the IR platform because it had the screen. I like the piece of mind of not relying on my cell phone. And then I went back and forth with the Mini and Messenger (and still do in my head). I ended up with the Mini because I liked having a backup nav device. I usually use my phone and/or Garmin Instinct to navigate, but a backup is nice. I also like the form factor of the mini, it seems to mount much better than the messenger even with some of the hacks I have seen. I do like the bigger battery and antenna of the messenger. The reverse charge is also a nice feature. So my final setup is iPhone (Avenza/Gaia) + Garmin Instinct + Mini 2. I also have an ACR Resqlink that I may bring too. It was my previous SOS solution, but really like the two way communication for so many reasons. Thanks for all of the video, they were helpful in my decision. It is good to hear that the Mini 2 seems like your preferred device for your use cases.

Thanks for the great information on what you use. I agree that a backup device is important. The Mini 2 may be my favorite, but the new GPSMAP 67i is giving it a run for it's money, especially since they made great improvements in the 67i's battery life, over the 66i. Thanks again for some great comments and advice. Rick

I really appreciate all your videos on these devices. I have been trying to decide which device to buy. Your in-depth review and analysis is just what I need to help make that decision. Probably all I really need is Garmin Messanger or Mini II. We mostly just day hike but sometimes long day hikes and sometimes backcountry-ish but nothing crazy. I have a subscription to All Trails, and it has always worked even when out of cell range, but I want the SOS and messaging feature just in case of emergency. Originally, I was thinking Montana 750i, but that is overkill and too big of a unit. So now I am thinking that the 67i is the way to go. The money is not an issue in that the Mini is $400 and the 67i is $600. That doesn't really seem like a big enough difference given all the extra performance you get from the 67i. I want a gps device mostly as an insurance policy, but a few extra bells and whistles would be nice too. Your comments on the cost part of the equation were helpful because, for this particular purchase, i am able to fund either device.

It's hard to go wrong with any three of those devices you just mentioned. If you have another way to navigate, then the Garmin Messenger may be all you need. It's great because it automatically switches between satellite service, cell service and WIFI, but the nice thing is, that both the Mini 2 and the GPSMAP 67i can use the Messenger app and also switch seamlessly between all of those services. The Mini 2 and the 67i are my two favorite satellite communicators, and now that the 67i has a much better battery than the 66i, it is hard for me to decide which one I like the best. The Mini 2 is really convenient and a great small size that is hard to even realize you have on your pack. The 67i has a lot more functions, plus with the built in screen and topo maps, it is a true stand alone device. After testing the 67i extensively, I would recommend the 67i over the Mini 2, but only if you don't mind the larger size and like a lot of tech. The Mini 2 is a more simple device if you don't want to get overwhelmed with a lot of functions. Initially I was overwhelmed with the 67i, but when I broke it down and looked at each part of what the 67i does, it became easy for me to use. Let me know if you have any questions or what you decide to get. Rick

I am in the position of needing to replace my Inreach SE that I have had for 10 years and has been with me on lots of trips in the Australian outback and sailing cruises. I have never needed mapping, and almost always had my phone on hand to make messaging easier. I'm retired now and have limited money so I've decided on the Zoleo as my replacement. Half the price of the Mini 2 and pkenty of functionality for my needs. Just my 2c. 😊

Thanks! To ensure potential medical advice and emergency re-location dialogs, I personally prefer two way messaging AND native typing on the satellite navigator. In case the phone dies. Situational advice can save someone until they can be picked up hours later, maybe next day.

Great advice. It's nice to have the convenience of a smartphone, but people need to be able to use their satellite communicator as a stand alone device when the phone's battery runs out or has other technical difficulties. Rick

For safety reasons, think redundancy on important functionality. You must be able to use SOS, basic navigation, and two-way messaging without a paired mobile phone. So, if thinking about a watch/phone/satcom combo, imagine that your mobile and watch become unavailable - and how you can then proceed to solve your problem.

I have a spot gen 4 but it is only a 1 way. I am looking at getting either a Spot x or a Garmin or Bivy stick. I go out about 1x a month and it would be nice to have a 2 way device. Monthly cost is a big factor but so is reliability. Is the Spot x really as spotty as the reviews say it is? What would you go with?
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech Жыл бұрын
I don't like to take sides but I have to be honest. I would stay away from the SPOT X and take a hard look at the Garmin inReach Mini 2, Garmin GPSMAP 67i or the ACR Bivy Stick. They all have good batteries, and are very reliable. The 67i is probably the best on the market as an all-in-one device but it will cost the most. The Mini 2 and the ACR Bivy Stick pretty much require you to sync to your smartphone to get all of the functions and maps. I will give you my personal opinion but take a look at them and let me know if you have any questions. Rick

@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech Жыл бұрын
The satellite communicators I cover here only give you the ability to message and call SOS. There are several options on the market for calling, internet and movies but you can find these by doing a quick search for mobile or portable RV satellite systems. I have done some research on these in the past as this is one thing I want to do in the future and that is to work anywhere in the world with a portable satellite system. The only issue is I am not even close to an expert in the field and really can't give you solid advice. Sorry I couldn't help, but someday, I plan on having this knowledge. Rick

Can the Garmin Messenger be used by any phone that has the app for it? We have the Bivy, and if something happens to my phone on the trail, anybody who has download the free Bivy app, can then connect to my phone and because the app is super user-friendly as you’ve noted, even my non-tech friends are easily able to connect to the Bivy. Can Garmin Messenger do this and is their app user friendly? How about the map part of it? For these reasons alone, the Bivy is the best option for emergency if more than one person on the trip.
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech Жыл бұрын
Those are some great questions and honestly, I don't have an answer for you, or at least not an official answer. I'm pretty sure that another person cannot connect to my Garmin if out on a trail. This would have to be set up when you're back at your computer. I may be wrong about this, but I think this is correct. I would hope that the Messenger app is available to other phones besides Apple, but again, I'm not sure. I'll be fishing with my buddy this weekend and I think he has a Samsung phone, so I'll see if he can download the Messenger App. Thanks for the challenging questions. I wish I had some better answers for you. Rick

I'm an old, non tech-savvy fly fisherman. Help. I like the size, shape and functions of the Messenger (because 99% of the time I can follow the river back to where I started). But 1% of the time I'm bushwhacking to the stream or can't remember where I entered a stream. Do I need the extra track functions of the Mini 2? I remember in one of your vids you said you fished a bit -- what do you think? Also, could the Mini 2 track a trip down a logging road to a stream so that you could follow it out? Thx ...

If I wanted solid tracking or TracBack, I would absolutely go with the Mini 2. It gives you extreme tracking information plus it's still easy to use compared to the Garmin GPSMAP 67i. I want weather forecast while out of cell phone reach and a SOS button. Money is no option. What do you advice?
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech 5 ай бұрын
I have not done any in depth analysis on weather forecasts between each brand, only to say the Garmin GPSMAP 67i and the Garmin inReach Mini 2 are my favorite satellite communicators and I just now compared the weather forecasts I typically get at home with the Extended Weather Forecast I just requested on my 67i. The forecast goes out about 7 days with more detailed forecasts every two hours for about 3 days. The forecast was right on, with reason, to the forecast I get at home. I can also get additional details such as "Feels Like," Wind speed and direction, gusts, humidity, and pressure in mb. Let me know if you have any other questions, but if you want the best for hiking or backpacking, I would go with the Garmin GPSMAP 67i or the Garmin Montana 750i if you more into off-roading. Rick

The Gen 1 Garmin Mini is discontinued and is being sold $100 off at Cabelas. Is this a good deal for us looking to save a few dollars
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech 11 ай бұрын
Absolutely! There are a few things to consider though. First, at some point in the future, Garmin will stop supporting older devices. There's no way to tell when that will happen, but I would suspect that this would not be the case on the Mini for several years. Second, the Mini 2 has better features, such as showing the course and tracks on the screen, plus gives off-course and on-course audible and visual alerts. Honestly, now that I own so many of these satellite communicators, and probably have gotten spoiled, I would save up for the Mini 2 or the GPSMAP 67i, but I remember four years ago, I could only afford the SPOT Gen 3, on sale, for $99.99, and I jumped all over that. Bottom line, the Mini 2 for $100 is an incredible price and you can always add a new version later. Let me know if you get it and what you think about it. Rick

You do have a point, but the Garmin Alpha 200i and the Garmin Montana 700i have touch screens so you type messages exactly like messaging on a smartphone, so I think this is the direction Garmin in heading with their larger devices. Good point though. Thanks for leaving the comment. Rick

Two is one, one is none. I always want to have redundancy if I can. This depends on what you do as well, if most of your hikes are within cellular service and near civilization then that's one thing but if you like to go really remote places then redundancy is probably better.
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech Жыл бұрын
Hey John. You're absolutely right. You can do everything with your cell phone and hiking apps if you're always within cell service. My thoughts and recommendations are when a person is outside of cell service when you need to have access to SOS and 2-way messaging. Thanks for the feedback. Rick
