@@58jharris Capcom is on the same level as Sega, but Konami? What did they have beside their beat em ups? Back in the 90s, Sega, Namco, Midway, & Capcom were the king of the arcades. SNK deserves mention but their cabinets weren't always packed with huge lines the way the previous 4 were.
@58jharris4 жыл бұрын
@@NB-1 I'm not so sure about the 80's, but Capcom was definitely king of the 90's arcade. Around 1989-90 arcades were on the decline due to the improvement in home gaming. Capcom, more than any other company, reversed that with the release of Street Fighter 2. The tournament fighter genre became by far most dominant in arcades and Capcom was at the top of the heap in producing them. The games you mentioned were all good but were not the defining games of the decade.

@@mehere3013 Arcades were meant to churn over players quickly, for more coinage, so they tended to be shallow with short learning curves; no one's going to spend a bunch of cash learning HOW to play your game, they just want to play, now. The only exceptions (i.e. games with real depth) were beat em ups like street fighter, virtua fighter series and their ilk, since they managed the holy grail of being easy to pick up, but hard to get good at (which is why they earned the most money). Anything that endlessly scrolled (vertically or horizontally) was mostly shallow pap, but a lot of fun for short plays. R-Type, Final fight, shinobi, E-Swat, golden axe, metal slug, darius games, anything from Taito (and i love Taito) etc just wouldn't hold up today

Such an incredible company. It's really unbelievable how brave they were, constantly trying new things and pushing the entire industry forward through the 80's and 90's. If they hadn't existed gaming would probably be about 15 years behind where it is, right now and almost certainly a whole lot more bland. I almost wish they hadn't pushed the industry quite so hard and we'd still have them making consoles, today... But that was never their style.

they'd still be making consoles if the optical drive on the Dreamcast was DVD
@tomteatom2 жыл бұрын
@@BOZ_11 Unlikely. That probably would have nearly doubled the price of the unit. Got to remember that DVD players were only released to the wider European market when manufacturing at scale became possible and that was only a few months before the Dreamcast started manufacturing. When I bought my Dreamcast it was on the shelves next to DVD players that cost the same price, that Christmas.

@@BOZ_11 But it came out 2 years later, which is why it was able to include a DVD drive at a reasonable cost. The PS2 was also sold at a loss for several years, which is how it was able to attain that price point with the DVD drive in the package. A DVD drive for the Dreamcast was simply not an option for Sega.
@BOZ_112 жыл бұрын
@@tomteatom the NA release was one year between them, and all manufacturers sold at a loss back then, Sega included. If they charged $100 more and had a DVD drive, they would have sold way more than 10m units because everybody was buying ps2 as a cheap DVD player, since standalone DVD players were costing 2x and 3x more. They focused too much on being first, and being cheapest, and neither of those things saved them. It was a great console, but DVD at the end of the 90s took off like wildfire.

I wish NINTENDO gave SEGA arcade games more love. Im talking awesome 3D sega arcade titles. Planet Harrier, Jurresic park, Daytona usa 2, Wild riders, Magical truck adventure for example. Perfect for the Virtual store!
