I agree wholeheartedly about the pencil. My pencil is this small slim black mechanical pencil, 0.7 lead, very simple but sturdy with metal tips and clip. I got it in a Sakura manga drawing kit that came with a small set of pens, but this little pencil has been MY pencil for nearly 8 years. I’ve used it for thousands of sketches, hundreds of paintings, I’ve used it so much that the couple of times I lost it for a few days, I was so out of my element. My husband once bought me a replica of this exact pencil as a backup because around year 6-7, one of the parts in the pencil finally just gave. I think he intended for me to lay the old one to rest, but he was so shocked to come home and find me preforming surgery on the old one, replacing the busted little pieces with tweezers. The only piece of the original pencil that’s gone is the eraser cap, it fell below a porch years ago, but thanks to my husband I was able to replace that part with the replica he got me. Yea it’s just a pencil, but this pencil is MY pencil, I’ve worn a groove in the grip of the plastic where I’ve held it for so long, I know because I compared it to the replica. I don’t think I’ll ever replace it, only repair

reminds me of Esmerelda Weatherwax's broom from Equal Rites. 'Granny's broom is famous for being old and temperamental. It has been repaired so often that little of the original broom remains'

Another tip would be looking at the art boards that have notches for adjusting the angle of the board. This allows you some portability, but also to be able to utilize any flat surface (desk, counter, etc) as a drawing table. The issue with dedicated drawing tables are that they take up space, aren't portable and in my opinion you have to find art schools / companies liquidating their professional quality tables in order to get a decent one -- or if you're handy you could make your own as well.

I draw only digitally and choosing my tools was (and still is) a struggle. Traditionally I would buy a basic set of pencils and that's it. Digitally, it's impossible to count how many brushes there are and to someone who starts from zero, it's easy to sink in that. It took me a few months to create my "basic set" but I still have hundreds of brushes installed "for the future" and "just in case"...

Very intersting video. The approach of streamlininf the setup is really important to focus on the right things, I think. Tim, I’ve just gotten a iPad Pro for sketching. Would you consider doing the next Art Ritual drawing on your iPad? I know it would be interesting for me, but also for other people since you do Pencil and Photoshop quite frenquently but doesn’t touch on iPad that much if ever. I know that you’ve said it isn’t your favorite tool, but still I’m curios to see how you approach it. Thank you in advance!

some type of cardboard ( like the grey rigid one sometimes used to back some sketchpad ) will give you rigidity and the smoothness of a stack of paper, it's cheap to buy in great size, and you can cut it easily to fit your needs, it's a good solution to build yourself muliple working boards or various sizes :)

Blackwing was a stupid expensive pencil than it's reasonable value. Not a good choice, really.
