i used to think alot like she does when i 1st started working at a shop. But after doing MANY installs and tuning many cars for both SQ and Ground Pounding i can appreciate it when a deck gives me what i want when i want, when i want a powerful sound, the pioneer's powerful eq preset gets me pretty close to where i wanna be. Obv not 100% there but close enough where making corrections is so easy. I tested my Pioneer DEH-P800PRS in my house once and if this unit is anything like that it wins.

Trust me i also liked Pioneers for a long time but if you buy a Kenwood and actually compare those 2 you will be shocked how good the Kenwood sounds and never gets distorted while Pioneer does !

The kenwood is the only head unit that has the features you would expect in a new car. hands free calling, pandora controlled through the headset, and ipod integration. it was my only choice out of all the headsets that i looked through... ordered it today after playing with it for a while at sounds incredible.

I owned the Kenwood and I can tell you the sound options are pretty incredible. You can really customize your sound. The display was a huge problem for me. It was unreadable during the day. The other main problem was the usability of it. The only thing you can change safely while driving is the volume. Anything else and you should pull over. This includes simple things like changing to a preset station. Everything requires you to take your eyes off the road. Thanks for the review! :)

i am very veryy extremely satisfied with the new Kenwood 2013 model head units. I always had Pioneer Alpine.. The Kenwood units are soo much powerful very good balanced sound and very very loud without being distorted at high volume as many head units. I was planning to install a infinity basslink subwoofer, but right now with the Kenwood head unit it sounds a lots of bass. People think i have subwoofer at the back. And so much sound options with this 2013 kenwood head unit.Again veryy satisfied

Navigating the pioneers menu's takes a little getting used to, but now that im comfortable with it, it's a breeze. I think the 80PRS is clearly the best unit in this group. The signal from this deck has been measured to be extremely flat by other users in the car audio community. I would like the crossover sections to be a bit more robust and it would be nice to have a digital out. This deck is a fantastic bargain and performs very admirably. I used a DRZ in my last install for reference.

Hello I just want to tell you that I went to Beach Audio in Huntington Beach Ca, I had the head guy show me all the head units he had on the board. Amazingly enough he said the exact same thing carstereo chick is saying on this vid. He also gave Alpine 138 2nd place and Pioneer 80prs 3rd!

Plain and simple I had all three and the Pioneer kicks all of their asses! Volume knob goes to sixty with minimal distortion giving tremendous headroom! The auto eq sounds great and blasts any head unit for the money. Unlike some units with auto eq and processors that do it.{Alpine CDA-117 plus Imprint total $500}. Pioneers auto eq lets you further tweek your sound even after auto eq is done You can still change seat positions, move through five different soundfields etc. Pioneer all the way!

Oh man I remember back in 06-07 the 80prs pioneer was the deck to have on all the forums if you werent running a double din navi. I always wanted one but back then they were like 700+ -- I can get them for about 200 now. w00t!

I like that you talk about eg the visibility in sun light, or how the units are used. I think this is pretty important in daily use. Personally I don't see a point to spend a lot of money on car audio, because you are supposed to concentrate on traffic, not on music. And with the noise of your engine and other noises in car traffic, sound quality will never be what it could be on a home stereo. But other people may see this differently.... that's fair enough.

I have the KDC-X996, and it stopped taking cd's. It also does not display cd mode when you cycle through the various modes. I'm sending it back after only 3 months of ownership.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree I need to try it in a car with the auto EQ. On our sound board, it's not like a car where you have many things to correct for based on cabin, speaker location, etc. So I usually like to try everything at flat listening mainly for the most natural and lively sound reproduction with as little correction needed as possible. I was also trying to take ease of use into account, and I gotta tell you, I find the Pioneer a pain :) Maybe with auto EQ it's worth it?

I have not tried all the decks out but I have been happy with Kenwood head units so far. I think the x996 is really great because it has built in HD Radio and you can get Sirius SM in it if you want. I don't believe the Pioneer does either one. I am all for sound quality for sure and have considered the Pioneer but I also here the build quality is lacking. I heard it has a flimsy face plate and that if you push the buttons hard enough with is not that hard, the lights will momentarily turn off.

Kenwood has the best sound ever made. See how easy that is? SQ is in the ear of the beholder and I've alway prefered the cleaner sound of Kenwood.

I have had a hard time looking for any straight answers on this topic. So are kenwoods known to raise the highs and lows in their "flat" eq or something? Because that normally sounds better to people and having an alpine for several years myself, I found it hard to warm up or tame those mids, but maybe it's just because of the ear's natural sensitivity to that range and a flat eq makes them seem prominent.

Pioneer 80PRS, and love it. Did you go through the Auto EQ? Flip the 3way switch on the bottom of the unit? It's in standard mode by default. I agree the sound is not great by default, but I think that's a moot point -- we're installing aftermarket (not default) units, why expect their defaults to sound good? Especially across non-standard installs! I'm using my stock amps, manually wired (no harness for the Infinity system), kappa perfect components, and SKAR 1500.1 amp/subs. To each their own!

Seeing that the Pioneer Deh-80prs was eliminated, this review seems a bit off. The 28 bit float point processing, 3 independent DACs, 3 way Network mode, independent L-R 16 band EQ's and auto EQ puts the DEH-80prs into a separate category of head unit second only to the DEX-p99rs No other single din head unit on the market lets you run component speakers active off of deck power. What I see here is a lack of fair comparison and product information.

i like this video you did a great job at explaining why the kenwood is the best choice but i still went with the hd138bt alpine because my ears are different then yours and it is just so much easy'er to use and its great in sun light i have not had one time the sun block the screen for me to see it. and it has a 7 band EQ which is plenty of control for most and high pass low pass filters and matched with the right speaker's and 4ch amp it is all you could ever ask for and i came froma kw excelon

I bet the Pioneer sounded "flat". If so that is how it should sound, with everything flat the best radio should not color the sound at all! If that is the case I am definitely getting the Pioneer (plus it can play .WAV). I was going to get the ALPINE until I found out the Pioneer can play .WAV and the ALPINE can't and that the Pioneer has a 16-Band EQ!

How reliable them new kenwoods are? I had 4 Kenwoods cd players back 6 years ago and they all had same issues with failure to eject cd's and also one of them just burnt out on me for no reason. Alpine never gave me any issues except for the factory one i had in my Lincoln. I heard Pioneers are very reliable.

I thought you said the Kenwood had a crossover. So if you're running components which already have crossovers what do you do? Do you disconnect them and just connect to the Kenwood crossover? Leesherwood Thanks, yeah I"m behind on my reviews - I've really been loving Sony's MEX-GS610BT for a good sound quality full featured single din. Kenwood still makes great sounding units, the KDC-X998 has been carried over from last year and it's pretty similar to what you see in this video, but honestly I like the sound of the Sony slightly more than the Kenwood. It's 5 volt preout, 3 year warranty, 9 band EQ (using Sony Remote App), digital time alignment, dual USB, Bluetooth and it has buttons. Buttons make it easier to use. The Kenwood looks clean and has a larger display, but I don't think it's as user friendly, but still a great option.

Hi Annie. I purchased the Sony CDXGS710HD I agree with your findings. I feel the Sony uses a lot of DSP power to optimize the signal, Very clear and loud before distortion, with so many different avenues to modify your signal path as well. Coming from an Alpine HD receiver, I feel the difference is the Alpine uses a high quality preamp and amp section, but doesn't try to modify the sound or enhance it. The thing that I notice with the CDX series, (don't know about the MEX series) is that, using this unit at high volumes causes the back panel heat sink to get super hot, hot enough to cook bacon, while on the Alpine, which has a cooling fan ( on this unit at least) stays cooler. The Sony is also lighter weight than the Alpine. What's your thoughts? P.S. Is your store close to Levine Automotive?

hmm, I don't know if the sound changed over the years, but I had a cda-9856 for years and the midrange was always way too prominent. It always sounded so small and harsh because the mid-mids(about 800hz-2.3khz) seemed over emphasized. I have seen on forums others posting similar analyses of alpines. I am switching to a kenwood by recommendation, but I hope it doesn't have MORE midrange like this chick says. My ears can't handle more of what they are most sensitive to.

I have the KDC - X995 it's pretty much the same as the newer version KDC-X996. But the KDC-X996 is little better. The EQ is more 13 band. KDC - X995 it has 5 band EQ. Anyhow love the decks. I was going to get the KDC-X996. But the store had a sale for the discontinued models such as KDC-X995. So i bought that one instead. Later on i will buy the next new model for my new truck sometime lol.

she didn't go threw the kenwood i have a kiv-bt900 man and its a great deck only downfall is it doesn't play cd's but its 2012 who still uses cd's but anyways the pioneer is nice as well but they confuess me i like the kenwood becuase it has a basic set up the a detailed set up as well and its very user friendly i just got mine a week and a half ago ill upload a video of it soon its really a great deck but the detailed set up still gets me some times

Why couldn't Kenwood have included flippin preset buttons across the bottom?! I love just about everything else about the headunit, (and other current Kenwoods), other than that, heh. We're not ALLLL iCrap junkies! I guess I could go for an X796, but I'm not a fan of the ultra tiny display area. While I love Excelon units, I agree about the shiny finish as well. Ahh Kenwood, you used to make nearly aesthetically perfect radio faces, what happened!?

Thanks for the review, the Pioneer wins in the best DSProcessing, no doubt.i really like that about mine. But if you want great processing you need a separate processor or a $1000 plus P99. there is something about the sound of the 80prs i don't like ether. so i'll try a kenwood next.

I had a Kenwood headunit, it looked fantastic and had a lot of possibilities. BUT...it was very difficult to operate, and it had very poor bass. The display was also very difficult to read from drivers angle. I changed to Pioneer, which has an extremely much better and more powerful sound, and is way easier to operate. I am much more satisfied with the Pioneer.

Are you high? the 80prs is the top contender here. granted flat the kenwood can take over, but the fact that the 80prs has auto calibration for its EQ and Position Alignment to give you a good start before calibrations is what pushes it over kenwood, and its built in crossovers means i dont have to hook up the shitty crossovers that come with my speaker, so i can still fine tune all my frequency responses without a speaker crossover getting in the way. As for display, it blows the other 2 contenders away. At night i found it to have really deep colors compaired to other models, and the little visual EQ playing with the music makes it look better aswell. The only thing bad about it is the folder search options, but that is a standard with most non-kenwood units, it may not be a perfect HU, but its better then the other 2

Dylan White I do think the Pioneer has a better display, but I've NEVER had good luck with ANY brands auto calibration EQ including Pioneer's. I'm serious. Never. Period. Nada. I've always found it to be a total waste of time and we always end up going back to doing the tuning the old fashioned way for the best audible outcome.And the whole idea of an EQ is to correct for imperfections. You say you grant me that flat the Kenwood sounds better - well don't you want to start with the best and cleanest source possible and then simply use your EQ as a tool to correct for any imperfections that occur in the cabin? I mean that's the point of an EQ. To correct for frequencies that are exaggerated or lacking. You still want to start with the cleanest and most accurate sound reproduction first and then tweak it from there as needed.Plus it's 2014, the DEH-80PRS is old and Pioneer is not focused on making single din SQ decks anymore.

Kenwoods are great for about 5min until the motorized face jams or it just dies. I used to sell kenwood,alpine,pioneer,jvc,etc... the kenwoods were always the ones that broke the most and customers were always mad because it took forever to get them repaired under warranty. Never in my life would i own a ken wood, every Alpine and pioneer ive owned has been trouble free!!

the pioneer is the best unit in this segment for sure. Firstly a great SQ deck when set flat is supposed to sound exactly like that, "FLAT". Secondly, i am pretty sure you didn't use the pioneer in network mode which changes the sound of the unit 10 fold. Thirdly,If you set the unit flat and it sounds brighter or more lively than another then obviously it is not doing its job.

You obviously have no idea what flat means on the deck. It doesn't "fix" anything. Just because you're inept at using your radio doesn't mean its a bad radio. The Pico fuse is only a problem if you hot swap your rcas. This deck is leaps and bounds above anything else out there. If they used an rta and set them up it would be a fair comparison. You can get better sound. And yes more crossovers and adjustments does mean better sound.

To all the people who picked the Pioneer, Why? I am building my system , and not sure if I will even get an amp and/or a subwoofer because this is just a beater truck. I have the Alpine SPR-60C's in the front, and SPR-60's in the back. Beleive it or not with my stock radio these speakers sound pretty decent, alot better than I expected. Pioneer 14 watts RMS Kenwood 22 watts RMS, NO HD RADIO on the Pioneer....WHY? I guess I will have to go to my local dealer and just hear them for myself.

FLAT is what sound is supposed to sound like is an true statement. But FLAT on a spectrum is almost never achieved with a FLAT EQ setting as we do not drive in padded anechoic chambers. We drive in basically the worst form of a listening environment available. But i think she said that the other decks sounded more lively than the pioneer does when they were all set to flat, if we are talking about what sound is supposed to sound like, i think when i press flat i wanna hear flat, not lively.

How does "poor perfomance" in a flat eq setting eliminate the Pioneer? You can't even touch the power of the pioneer with any deck near its price as far as performance and tuning options go. Basically all you're saying here is that your wall speakers that you tested on sound like crap and the pioneer helped make it obvious. I've measured the output of the pioneer to be truely what it needs to be when set to flat, which is flat. Using the deck for an active setup (aka network mode) trumps all.

Pioneer wins because its auto eq takes care of business where its supposed to, and thats in a car. I'm sure that not too many people are going to be listening to their music FLAT. If you are just get a unit without all the gadgets! It doesn't matter which one sounds better flat. Test those babies in a car and utilize the EQ's and you'll see which one sounds better then. PIONEER!

I understand alot of what you said: like the alpine sounding treble and bass heavy, if i remember correctly the last alpine to sound good was the cda-9835. I upgraded from a 9835 to an 800prs about a year ago and at first i thought that it was more of a downgrade, but after some good tuning time like maybe 3 hours worth, i was able to get my soundstage higher and better centered with the pioneer than i was with the alpine. And tbh the pioneer is 99x easier to use than the other head units.

Sorry Chick, but your way off! The 80 is most likely the only deck to measure flat(when set to flat with AT & TA off). But when I buy a new color TV, dont turn the color down and make it B&W. Thats what your doing with the Pioneer, as it was designed to fully tune your car for the best SQ.

USB hard drives? You may have them lying around, but do yourself a favour and buy a USB stick, preferably the short ones that don't stick out of the unit. You can fit thousands of songs on a 8 GB or so stick. Also, selecting a unit for probably the most cumbersome media, just does not "sound right", pun intended. Anyway, it is entirely up to you. If you want to save the $20 for an 8 GB stick, up to you, really.

Whether I'm comparing head units against each other on a sound board, in a car or on a test bench - there is an audible difference in sound quality between head units. In fact, that difference is going to be even MORE noticeable in a vehicle than a sound board (as you don't have any effect on sound quality by the MTI switches in the sound board itself).

Going to have to disagree. The Pioneer is head-and-shoulders better than every other currently available head unit under $400. Maybe you should double check your testing methodology to ensure that they are all on the same level. Also, many times Manufactures will use "tricks" to make a deck sound better on a sound board. Tuned and "in-car" the Pioneer has much greater potential for competition level SQ.

Chris Vance Hi Chris, that's interesting, that really just hasn't been my experience in a car or a sound board. The other thing to consider, and I tell my customers this too, is everyone's ears are different. Some of of my customers flat out cannot tell the difference in product (head units, speakers or amps) and I am quite up front in letting people know this when auditioning products. I even tell them don't pay for the difference if you can't hear it! What sounds good to me and what sounds good to you may be two totally different things. Some people are much more sensitive to certain frequencies than others. Personally, I can tell you I am very sensitive to exaggeration of higher frequencies (which Alpine seems to exaggerate in comparison to Kenwood or Pioneer) and I'm very sensitive to hearing large gaps in frequency ranges. This is an older Post too from 2012. I would say that this year, for single din, Kenwood eXcelon still wins. Pioneer hasn't even made a new single din SQ head unit in the past 2 years. It just shows where their focus is as a company. It's not in single din SQ head units, it's in their double din, navigation and carplay/app radio mode head units. Because face it, those are the features MOST consumers are looking for.

Hi Oscar, Also consider Sony's MEXGS610BT. It's a lot easier to use than Kenwood's top of the line Excelon models, it sounds awesome, 5V preouts, EQ, 24 Bit DAC and comes with a 3 year warranty. I have the double din equivalent of this model in my Jeep Wrangler and have been blown away by its sound quality. For single din sound, for quality yeah - they sound kind of muddy compared to Sony, Kenwood or Alpine - until you get up to the App Radio 4 or any of the NEX models.

Joseph Stalin Well JVC and Kenwood pretty much share the same components these days since they've merged. And you gotta remember this stuff changes constantly, each year and they've all had their off years and off models so depending on which model and when it can make a lot of sense.
