This system works, but I had to upgrade to Nomad13/Sherpa 50, to really do much, and these can be backpacked, without adding too much weight, unless you have too much already in the backpack. The panels require direct sunlight, without that, it takes a long time to charge the Goal Zero batteries. If you don't think you will get direct sunlight for very long, I would grab the next larger solar panel, to use for hiking or camping. Started out with the Nomad 7/ Guide 10 kit, then added another Guide 10. I now have a Sherpa 50/ Nomad 13/ Nomad 20. Just bought two Boulder 30's and a Yeti 400.

Bought one of these recently for my iPhone and waterproof camera , very impressed , just keep the Guide 10 battery pack charged and it works great . Today I charged iPhone for 2hrs in Aussie spring sun and got 50 percent charge , very happy with it !

Just grabbed this from the REI Garage Sale... someone returned it claiming it "doesn't charge". It was only $36.83, so I took a gamble. Trying it now with indirect sunlight on my windowsill on a partly sunny day... works like a charm! this video is great, gave me a rough idea of how long it'll take to charge my cell (Samsung S5). Hello there! WOW! You did a really good job describing this solar charger. I have a tiny bit of criticism though. You confused a buddy here regarding your 'GUIDE 10' charging... lol. I had to explain to her that it is the set of BATTERIES that are in the 'Guide 10' that the solar panel is charging. Maybe, when you talk about this to others, you should make it clear regarding this topic, okay?

I haven't used this particular solar set up but I have tried a something similar. I found it didn't actually charge but merely just about kept up with the normal discharge of the phone when on standby..

How many mAh is the double A battery pack and can you get an upgraded pack that holds more batteries? Also can you charge a phone for example with the pack while having the pack connected to the solar panels to charge it?

The Guide ten on the other hand killed my Android tablet when I tried to charge it. Over voltage on the USB port.

Have you tried plugging the guide into the wall via a usb wall charger? I bought a 2.4 amp one from amazon with hopes that it will charge faster. A friend of mine was using a cheap dollar store usb wall charger on the trail to charge the guide and it took forever.

Great video, helps people to figure it out, however I think I'm going for there larger Sherpa 100 kit providing 10 times battery and about 3 times larger panel at only $550-600(depending on inverter) vs this $120.

I do not recommend charging any Apple products directly from the Nomad panels. Apple products are very sensitive to inconsistent power source. As soon as your panels are covered by shadows, the Apple device will show the message "Charging is not supported by this accessory". Even if you get direct sun later on, the Apple device will not continue charging until you unplug and plug back the USB cable. It's better to use the Guide10 Plus pack to charge Apple devices.

Cole, unfortunately, I don't know how long the system will last. According to Goal Zero, they say the Guide 10 Plus has a life span of hundreds of cycles and has a shelf life of 12 months, meaning it should hold a charge for 12 months. It's also important to know that both the Nomad 7 and the Guide 10 Plus have 12 month warranties.

Kimberly, the Guide 10 Plus Adventure Kit is modestly priced compared to how well it works. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for and in my honest opinion, this is well worth the investment. As for it being good for the environment, it uses solar energy so it is saving the environment. I'm not sure on the materials that actually go into the product so I'm not qualified to cast judgement on how this compares to others.

it's not a good solar charger at all. Google "Portapow 11", better in every way plus it's a 1/4 of the price.
