That’s a great PSA. We have a carbon monoxide alarm and it’s gone off a couple times. Definitely a must have in your cabin.
@BreakingFreeOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! We also leave our kitchen window cracked at all times.

We have the same refrigerator two identical ones side by side excellent. We also got two inert gas detection devices with meters. YOU definitely want to be aware of hazard substances in case of a gas leak. Or fire. So get fire alarms installed too, With ten year batteries. In New Zealand, it's common sense Now, this government is making it law.

I have a Unique fridge, too, but propane. The vegetable drawer was hard to operate on mine, too. Plus, the glass on the shelf that it slides into broke from putting a pot of soup on it. I replaced the glass and it happened again. It's the only place large enough in the fridg to put anything large. Anyway, I ended up taking that shelf with the glass out completely. Now I am short one shelf, so I just pile up more crap in the drawer. LOL. Propane fridgs are notorious for their diminished size. You'd have to go to probably a Servel or other "high end" brand to get a larger unit. Talk about expensive!!! Yowza!

At least I’m not the only one who struggles with the veggie drawer. Sorry to hear about the shelf. I would not be happy if I lost a shelf.

Toni...my experience: I own a small propane refrigerator which I thought that I would use when I moved off grid. After all the years of living on grid we had developed big refrigerator habits. We have easily adapted to living totally off solar power but that little 10 cuft fridge wasn't cutting it. I opted 4 years ago to use a regular but special AC refrigerator. It is an LG brand 26 cubic foot that has a inverter compressor. This compressor soft starts and runs very efficiently without the big starting current of a normal compressor...perfect for solar power. It even has an ice maker. I've metered it and it uses 1250 watt hours per day...which is "a lot" on a solar daily budget of 4000 watt hours. 9 months of the year here in Idaho this refrigerator power consumption is a total non-issue. In November through January we average 80 hours of generator time. In addition to the LG refrigerator we run two 15 cubic foot energy star chest freezers. These two freezers together only consume 300 watt hours daily in the winter months since they are "outside". I absolutely agree we must have the protection of smoke and CO detectors. Thanks for the great video.

I love using the cold weather for our freezer. It’s pretty much outside as well. 😀

I checked out the larger Unique fridge, it was nearly $2,000. solar version. And, that's with 16 cu ft only!! We just put in solar, and hooked up the back of the freezer, regular fridge and another smaller fridge, (one in barn, two in house) and those units work on electricity but are totally backed up by solar. And, it works. When we've lost electric, perhaps 3 times in 10 yrs, the units remained staying on. We saved on units buying on sale, but as ya know everything is up now-adays. This past Jan.-Feb., a neighbor near our farmhouse went by to check our unit in the house. We were hit with a really bad storm, naturally bad up and down our road, so neighbor (he lives a ways from us) went by as soon as he could get through. (We were in Florida with the kids...warmer climate.) He went into the barn, the freezer was still at 0 degrees, and okay. He went and checked the unit in the barn, and it was okay as well. There was snow ontop of all the solar panels, so he brushed them off for us as well. Then went into the house, check the fridge and freezer and it was all still frozen. The small fridge wasn't checked, but we went back to the farm end of Jan. and the breaker trips from the one electrical unit that comes with solar backup also. We turned it back on, only loss a few things in that freezer, much smaller. The larger fridge worked fine and all the stuff in the freezer was still solidly frozen. (If you pack a freezer very tight, if it's off, it thaws much slower....) So, perhaps when building larger place, think solar first, then back it up to the electrical sockets within the cabin- the solar is on all the time, and batteries are still doing fine after about 7-8 yrs. But, shortly we will have to replace them. So, if you get that solar into it, make sure to have it all tested. Anyways, once we put in solar- dropped our electrical bill by about 60-70%..

They are expensive. However, I feel since they’re for off grid applications they use less energy. We haven’t had to charge our batteries anymore with the fridge than before we got it. That’s great that you didn’t loose much while you were gone! Always a bonus 😀

Yes mine sticks too…😂 size…I don’t have much in mine.😂 Mine only uses about .2-.3 volts though the night. That’s the easiest way for me to get those numbers. At night when nothing else is running. I had a propane fridge at first and had a similar problem. Not as severe. Carbon monoxide detector.👍 I love mine. One of the best investments for the property..!! I would tell anyone going off grid to make the investment you won’t regret it. Even how expensive they are. One more disadvantage you have to defrost them. Like the old days.😂 But that’s part of the reason there so efficient. Great video. You guys have a wonderful night..!!
@BreakingFreeOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
Lol! At least I’m not doing something wrong! We will never have a propane grid again, they’re dangerous and they use a lot of propane. Defrosting it is kind of a bummer, but like you said that’s what makes it efficient. We love ours too!

You are lucky to have slept up above, if your sleeping place had been on lower level, you would likely have been in permanent sleep. It remains a very serious problem for gas burner based units not to be serviced on regular basis. A bit restricted air supply to gas ratio and ANY leakage from exhaust flow, or no exterior exhaust flow for a pilot light, and people maybe gassed in any room/building space with poor air exchange. You have had extreme luck. That DC "off grid" refrigerator seems a special item and definitely worthwhile off grid. Do not need regular gas topup any more either, unless you depend on that for other reasons like cooking and heating, on heating beware of CO also. Cooking less than blue flames make clear lack of oxygen available, so also CO potential.
@BreakingFreeOffGrid2 жыл бұрын
We were really lucky! We actually leave the kitchen window cracked at all times now. We still use propane for our cook stove but, we do not use the pilot lights. We light the burners by hand. CO is sooooo scary! It’s called the silent killer for a reason. Thank you so much for the awesome comment! 😀
@helmuthschultes92432 жыл бұрын
@@BreakingFreeOffGrid good choice, lighting the cooker by hand, I do too. An old gas heater for lounge is out of service for over 12 years, infact the gas line has been removed . A gas flowthrough water heater has a pilot light, but is vented outdoors, and is cleaned annually also, and flame colour checked 3 months. There are so many who have been taken by CO. Best wishes.
