When there was a drought in 3rd party batteries for the a7iii (except for the sold out and much too expensive wasabis) I went with a bunch of King-Mah batteries off of Ali Express. They took some time to get in, but I've been quite happy with their performance so far!

It's hard to beat DSTE (for any camera system) for price/performance indeed. As I've already said, DSTE are the only third-party batteries I use now for my both Nikon and Fuji cameras at home, and also for a bunch of Panasonics (GH3/4/5/5s) at work. They have proved to be quite reliable over the years - they don't loose the capacity fast and dont swell with time like many off-brand batteries do.

One thought I had is, if someone comes across your video and likes the setup you are shooting with (in this video you mentioned its the a7III) maybe you could start a new thing in the description of each video in text , of what camera+lens you are using and any additional lights used, just incase you maybe have not verbally mentioned it in the video. To my knowledge, something that's fairly important but hard to test is how betteries lose capacity over time. There a many brands that can make a decent capacity unit at the beginning of it's life, but will lose it quickly. The quality of the charger is also important and it 's probably better to buy the original one despite using third party batteries. I use Patona batteries on the GH5 and always charge them with the original one. They a pretty close the the capacity of tue lumix battery and after one year seem to be good as new. I also try to do full charge-discharge cicle most of the time, I guess that helps as well.

Thanks great review. The dste here is 25 including a charger... As per the Meike battery grip i would be very careful i had it for two month and got various file errors, funky changes on camera shutter, random freeze. And if you look on blogs you'll find this problem well acknowledged with previous grips for other Sony cameras. Watch out.

When I got my GH5 I bought a bunch of 3rd party batteries. Then weird stuff started happening. My GH5's monitor started flickering regardless of battery strength. So, I've since bought Panasonic made batteries. Yes, it cost me more money. But, now, no more flickering or any other issues.
@brjukva
@brjukva 6 жыл бұрын
My GH5 fell into "I'll kill my shutter now" mode when it was powered by one of the 3rd party batteries and I was shooting photos. I guess the battery failed to hold the required current/voltage for the mechanical shutter to properly open and close, the shutter was doing several unsuccessful attempts to cycle properly per second, monitor went all stripy and camera stopped reacting to anything. I had to pull out the battery to stop this madness and I never used that battery again. I can imagine GH5 killing its shutter pretty quickly if left unattended shooting time lapses with mechanical shutter on and a 3rd party battery in.

A recent Amazon review is stating that the newest Sony A7III Firmware 3.10 is giving a warning with the DSTE battery. Have you had any (major) problems using 3rd-party batteries with updated Sony firmware? Or is it just a scare tactic? It would be cool to revisit this topic since people are continuing to buy the A7III. Thanks! And great videos as always!

Hi, Caleb. I follow you since years and love your videos so much. I’m actually a Canon user, but I think it is same for all brands. I wanna buy couple of third party batteries for my Canon camera and to be honest, I’m a little bit skeptical about these cheap knockoff batteries from Amazon. Okay, they are cheap and therefore not a big expectation, but... The key question: Can the third party batteries harm the camera? I’ve bought plenty of photography/videography gears with your suggestions over the years and I was never disappointed. If you say that the third party batteries don’t harm the cameras, I‘ll go and order the batteries right away. :D Wish you a great day!! 👍😊

I'd love to be able to spend a little less on the FZ100 batteries but I figure in the long run it's probably just worth it to spend the $78 on the Sony batteries. For lasting performance and overall reliability I think it makes the most sense. After all it's a $2k camera body and spending about 4% that for an extra battery and again around 4% for the external charger really isn't a bad deal at all for the technology you're using it with.
