Best Speakers Under $2k: Morel Avyra 633 Loudspeaker Review

I bought these speakers after hearing them at Axpona. They were startlingly good and so I thought, I need to get these in to see if they would be as good at home. Long story short, they are. I had to order them directly from Morel. I received them after 2 weeks. They are very clean in the mid-range and their treble performance is very good as well. They do go low, but not deep I would say. Placement is critical to get the best bass response, but it just takes a little effort, not a lot to get them sounding great. They throw a huge soundstage that's wide and tall, which the latter is surprising given how short the speaker is. I've had several people over to hear them and everyone has been very impressed. They will beat most $4k speakers out there.

I think these are some of the best looking speakers out there right now for the price range. My only gripe is not having bi-amp terminals.

Good to see down-to-earth products being so positively reviewed! You made a small mistake which is a pet peeve of mine when you said the instruments of the Barber of Seville performance were in your room. No. Only close miked recordings with no ambient sound really try to put the performers in your room. All else, especially recordings of symphonic works and opera, put you in the recording venue, not vice versa. "Like they were in the room" is a very common reviewing phrase, wrongly used in the majority of cases. Sorry for the rant and keep up the good work!

Big voice coils = wide brush. They’re impressively broad and macro in their presentation. Best enjoyed louder, with a burly amp in a big room. IMO

Black background doesn't come from speakers. Comes from the gear and the recording itself. I've had probably 20 different pairs of speakers and not one of them presented a background that wasn't black

It is an interesting point and, possibly, question. By ‘black background’ we generally mean the myriad elements of noise and distortion that mask or blur the rendition of small signals (e.g. reflections in a concert venue or harmonics from an instrument). Often these are not heard literally as noise (e.g. audible hiss) or distortion but simply by the loss of detail, ambience and resolution. Since loudspeakers have many times the distortion of electronics, especially in the time domain, it is likely that they may impose some of these masking effects on small signals. So, when a speaker or DAC or amplifier is introduced into a reference system and resolution or ambience or inter-transient silence are increased, it can fall under the ‘black background’ term. If you are thinking that speakers are passive devices and thus have no self-generated noise, that may be the cause of confusion. We are speaking of effects, not specific causes. Hope that helps.

$2,000 probably should be considered Pre Entry Level Audiophile since speakers can go north of a million dollars

Perhaps, but we define ‘entry level’ as what people indicate they might spend on their first system beyond headphones or a soundbar. They usually say $500 to $2000. After a little learning about audio, that may adjust to $750 to $4000. Of course different people have different budgets, but lots of people entering the sport have to learn what is what and what that costs. As with anything. Fortunately for those budgets you can get some very nice audio.
