I remeber when i did all my screen printing very D.I.Y right out of highschool. I had a particle board i cut at 30x40 and used some door hinges and c clamps to serve as a make shift print head. I made screens out of wood and used gorrila glue to glue the mesh to the screens. I also used a heat gun to dry my ink and a iron to heat set. Now im doing 100 shirt runs with a 4 color print press and a dryer.

The ultimate kit is almost identical to the once i go over in this video. You just get a extra screen, some more ink colors and a instructional DVD. This kit will work the same way the one above does, plus you have all the colors, so you mix them to get any shade you want. You should be all set. Let me know how it goes!

NEVER!! take your exposed screen outside to wash it out. Do it in a sink or tub inside so that the unexposed area stays that way. If it is exposed to the sun it may in fact begin to harden before you get it washed out. Also, keep about 1/4" between the screen and your medium so that the screen can get away from the medium after it is exposed to ink.

Can I have a small light in the room, like a cellphone light? Otherwise how can I see something in a pitch dark room?
@ds618217 жыл бұрын
This answer is now a year late, but once you turn off the light source and remove the glass sheet and design, you can take the screen immediately to the sink and begin washing out the unexposed emulsion. The normal room light won't effect the unexposed part. The bulb used to expose the emulsion needs to be strong about about 12 inches from the design. The sun outside can be an issue if you're in the direct sunlight and wasting time getting the hose ready and setting up some way to hold the screen. But in your house with normal light you can move quickly and start washing out the emulsion (dilutes the emulsion making it hard to be exposed). I use a soft toothbrush to LIGHTLY rub those areas with finer detail to push out the emulsion.

I just got All i needed to start screenprinting and tody I did my first print. Everything was ok, but for the screen cleaning...where i had two problems: I used the Diazo remover and the green emulsion came out quite well (not really perfectly) but it has lots of black ink stains (all around where the emulsion was) that wont come out. Other problem is that the image that i have printed has stayed quite visible on the screen (not as much as the other stains which are black). Thanx from Madrid!

@NateScreenPrints18 жыл бұрын
The light need to be UV emitting, like sunlight or florescent lighting. You can find exposure bulbs that will fit into typical lamps if you dont have access to florescent lighting.
@Ash_Holio8 жыл бұрын
Im assuming you can use any fluorescent light for exposing the screen? I've never printed w/o an exposure unit, so I'm not sure what will or wont work.
@NateScreenPrints18 жыл бұрын
+Ashley Smith Any light source will work. Even regular light bulbs. The only difference will be exposure time. Sunlight takes about 1 min. Florescent lighting about 10 mins. and regular bulbs can take nearly an hour. Its always highly recommended to test your exposure time with your preferred method

Am I able to print on multiple shirts before washing off the screen or is it better to wash between shirts?
@creepybunny2557 жыл бұрын
Speedball, I believe has all waterbased inks. What this means is it can dry in your screen and form clogs. After each print, flood your screen again to help prevent clogging between your shirts. So unless you're not eating lunch between your shirt prints, there's no need to wash your screen out between each print.

I don't understand why some exposure need a flat glass to cover the screen. Do i need this step?
@NateScreenPrints18 жыл бұрын
+Calvin Wong The glass just holds the transparency down flush on the screen. you dont want the transparency to hover over the screen if its warped a little because light will be able to get around it and you wont have a clean crisp edge to your design. if you can get good results just taping it down without using the glass, thats great. But i prefer to use the glass cover.

After I've let emulsion dry in the dark room can I use sun light for the exposure? If so how long for?
@ScopedKilz8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is how they did it in the 70s, before you could buy exposure units from Ryonet and other retailers. My dad said that he used to do it for 70-80 seconds in the California sun. The UV rays cure the emulsion VERY FAST. If you do it much longer, it will over burn and you will have to start over. Now, say it's cloudy, which rarely happens here in Cali, I don't really know what to tell you. I guess you'll have to wait for another day, or make a unit yourself using a 500w halogen light.

Another newbie tip, I can say having ruined MANY screens: DON'T PUT TOO MUCH EMULATION ON THE SCREEN BEFORE DRYING. A very thin coat. No one really mentions this. If you have too much emulsion, when it dries fully you will have hardened droplets that will ruin the whole thing. Obviously, while it dries, gravity will try to pull the emulsion downward. If there is too much emulsion, it will form droplets as gravity pulls on it. Those droplets harden, and bam! Have to clean the whole screen and start over again!

Moving the squeegee in more than one direction isn't recommended...you are more likely to get double images. And the iron should be employed for a full 5 minutes to insure good adhesion. This is a VERY simplistic example...but there are better ones online. The kit itself looks like enough to do a small project to decide if you really like printing.

What was your light source? I'm confused because it activates with UV and I'm not sure which kinds of lights emit UV. I've been doing it under sunlight, but it does it very quick, usually 30s-1min and there's a chance of overexposing it easily and bumping it because you're moving the screen outside and back inside. I'd prefer having an indoor light source so I don't have to move it while it's being exposed.
