A few pointer if I may. You're able to swing the sledge, so make full use of the length of the handle by making a complete swing. You get more power into your strikes that way. It helps to be accurate but that comes with practice. Put the wedge into the wood in such a way that the top (of the wedge) is leaning slightly away from you. That way, it is less likely to wander off at an angle which makes it harder to strike effectively. When it does wander, bring it back to near vertical like I just explained. Anyway, you're heading in the right direction.

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it, like you said I can swing it fine but I typically swing them with the middle of the handle because I worry about breaking the handle and having to make a new one or buy a $22 one. Next time I get alot of wood I will have to just try it and get the proper form like you said.

@@AmericanOutdoorLiving I would suggest that you get a sledge with a fibre-glass/composite handle. These are almost unbreakable. It is very easy to break a wooden handle on a sledge because of the extra weight of the head. In an overstrike the handle stops suddenly, but the head keeps going. With enough practice, and some thinking about what you are doing, overstrikes can be eliminated

Why are you holding the sledge like that?

I have more control when I hold it like that, I worry if I use it regularly I may br more likely to overstrike and break the handle.
